9:15 Engage Your People With Six SigmaThe information is widely spread over the world now: SixSigma is a key business strategy leading to breakthroughimprovements that definitively have a positive impact onthe bottom line. In all these companies, an elite of BlackBelts and Green Belts are hunting the most importantproblems in order to find sustainable solutions and save thecompany hundreds or millions of dollars a year.Complementary to this approach, there is another way thatis used quite seldom. In fact, each organisation has manypeople and just few Black Belts or Green Belts. There is amass of untapped resources left aside: we train them asWhite Belts. In a high performance organisation, they allimprove their processes. Each project is more modest invalue, but the number of these projects can be huge andthus, their impact on the bottom line is important. Inaddition, this broad improvement effort leads also to highengagement and motivation of the workforce which leadsreally to a virtuous circle. Berthold will present how OwensCorning has achieved this extraordinary result in its Indianplant.Berthold Muller, MBB, Quality & Six SigmaLeader for Europe & AsiaOWENS CORNING
KEYNOTE PRESENTATION10:00 From Compliance to Science-Based CapabilitySix Sigma is aligned with the pharmaceuticaland chemical companies' commitment toquality and meeting regulatoryrequirements. The best way to ensureproduct quality is to make the product right every timethrough capable processes. It means gathering evidencethat shows processes are under control, or allow processchanges which can be demonstrated to eliminate thecauses of non-conformity. The regulatory authoritiesrecognise this and are preparing to change the emphasis ofquality systems to require statistical demonstration ofprocess capability and allow rational changes of processesto achieve this. Six Sigma is the state-of-the-art approachto achieving better quality and more predictable productreleases. Moreover, it will position companies as industryleaders in the eyes of regulators by demonstrating science-based process capability.Steven E. Crom, Managing Partner VALEOCON MANAGEMENT CONSULTING

Why you should attend IXPERION's 2nd Annual Conference
Six Sigma in Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals
The chemical and pharmaceutical industry began to sit upand take notice of Six Sigma in the mid-1990s. Manyfirms are now taking hold of the disciplined, data-drivenmethodology to eliminate defects in any process. Thesecompanies are actively driving toward six standarddeviations between the mean and the nearestspecification limit.
"Six Sigma is alive and well at DuPont," adds DonLinsenmann, DuPont's vice president and Six Sigmacorporate champion. "It is not an abstract concept, but awell-managed process of execution."
Effective Six Sigma implementation can prove challenging, however. A simple out-of-the-box solution is notavailable.
The biggest challenge in an early implementation is to getpeople aligned with the approach. Six Sigma is a rigorousdata-based, disciplined process of improving processes.People must see Six Sigma as a how and not a what.
Early on, Six Sigma was delivering results for discrete partsmanufacturing, and a typical comment was that it couldnot apply to continuous manufacturing processes. Itbecame clear that Six Sigma was delivering benefits inchemical plants but many still considered the quality toolsuitable only for manufacturing. But Six Sigma is a farreaching quality initiative also suitable for transactionalprocesses.
Those corporations that see it as a business strategythat applies to all functions have reapedtremendous gains for their shareholders, theiremployees and their clients.
Once a chemical company gets past the initial doubts andconcerns regarding such a complex undertaking, therewards and benefits of Six Sigma certainly will seemworth the effort. But Six Sigma does not work all on itsown. The companies that embrace the methodologyas a part of their core business process will continueto grow. The challenge then becomes sustaining thatprofitability. Will Six Sigma continue to deliver five, 10 oreven 20 years from now?
