Maker of heaven, Giver of life, You are my strength, my song in the night. My refuge, my shelter, now and forevermore - Maker of heaven, Giver of life, You are my strength, my song in the night. T DIVINE SERVICE T

OPENING SONG Hallelujah for the Cross by Ross King and Todd Wright Faith’s Praises with Congregation

Up to the hill of Cal-vary, my Savior went coura-geously. And there He bled and died for me. Hallelujah for the cross! And on that day the world was changed; a final, perfect Lamb was slain. Let earth and heaven now proclaim: Hallelujah for the cross! (chorus) Hallelujah for the war He fought! Love has won, death has lost.

Hallelujah for the souls He bought! Hallelujah for the cross!

What good I’ve done could never save; my debt too great for deeds to pay. But God, my Savior, made a way. Hallelujah for the cross! A slave to sin, my life was bound, but all my chains fell to the ground, When Jesus’ blood came flowing down. Hallelujah for the cross! (chorus) And when I breathe my final breath, I’ll have no need to fear that rest. This hope will guide me into death: Hallelujah for the cross! (chorus 2x) Hallelujah for the cross! Hallelujah for the cross! OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN SING

INVOCATION

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 27:1, 4a, 5

P The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

Page 3: SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Faith Luth · SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST ... P For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; ... SONG OF PRAISE 10,000 Reasons

3

C The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

P One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after:

C that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

P For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble;

C He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Psalm 27:6, 9; Isaiah 55:6–7

P As we come to the house of the Lord, we know that we are unworthy of God’s love. We have sinned against friends and families, neighbors and co-workers.

C We have not loved God with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as

ourselves. We have grumbled against God and His authorities. We have sought selfish

desires instead of God’s will.

P We turn to God in repentance and implore Him for mercy.

Silence for reflection

P Lord, hide not Your face from us. Turn not Your servants away in anger.

C Do not forsake us, O God of our salvation!

P The prophet Isaiah writes, “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” The Lord is near to you. He has drawn near in the person of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection bring forgiveness, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen. And now my head shall be lifted up. I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy; I

will sing and make melody to the Lord.

 WORD

INTROIT Psalm 116:12–13, 15–16; antiphon: Psalm 116:17

P I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving

C and call on the name of the LORD

P What shall I render to the LORD

C for all his benefits to me?

P I will lift up the cup of salvation

C and call on the name of the LORD,

P Precious in the sight of the LORD

C is the death of his saints.

P O LORD, I am your servant;

C I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

You have loosed my bonds.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

P I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving

C and call on the name of the LORD KYRIE

P Lord, have mercy upon us.

C Christ, have mercy upon us.

C Lord, have mercy upon us.

SONG OF PRAISE 10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin Faith’s Praises with Congregation

(refrain)

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul. Worship His holy name.

Sing like never before, O my soul. I’ll worship Your holy name. The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning. It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me – let me be singing when the evening comes. (refrain) You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing – ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. (refrain) And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come, Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore. Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul. Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I’ll worship Your holy name, Worship Your holy name. God, I’ll worship Your holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name. I’ll worship Your holy name. God, I’ll worship Your holy name.

SERMON SONG You Are My King by Billy James Foote Faith’s Praises with Congregation

I’m forgiven – because You were forsaken. I’m accepted – You were condemned. I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me - because You died and rose again. Amazing love, how can it be – that You, my King, would die for me? Amazing love, I know it’s true. It’s my joy to honor You. (repeat) In all I do – I honor You. You – are my King. You – are my King. Jesus, You - are my King. Jesus, You – are my King. Amazing love, how can it be – that You, my King, would die for me? Amazing love, I know it’s true. It’s my joy to honor You. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Dear heavenly Father, You are the Lord of the harvest. Raise up missionaries who are willing to spread the Gospel of life and salvation to the ends of the earth. Grant them confidence and zeal to do Your work. Send Your Holy Spirit into the hearts of those who will hear the Word of Christ, that they may believe in You. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord, You are our rock and our refuge. Grant Your peace to all those who live in fear, especially immigrants, refugees, and all who are oppressed. Be their light and their salvation. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord, look with favor upon those who are homeless, unemployed, or underemployed. Grant them patience in the midst of suffering and meaningful vocations in Your perfect timing. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord, we know that Your ways are not our ways, but sometimes we fail to understand Your will. Strengthen the hearts of those who are coping with disappointment, especially those struggling with infertility or miscarriage. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord, be with those who are nearing the end of life. Send them comfort and strength as they will soon rest from their labors. Point them to the hope of Christ’s return and the resurrection of the dead. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Ever-living God, You gather to Your safe keeping the souls of those who have departed this world in the hope of the resurrection to eternal life through Jesus Christ. Receive our thanks for all the faithful departed, and grant that we may share with them the joys of Your everlasting Kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord, we ask Your blessing and healing upon all who are sick or recovering, [especially . . .]. Cheer their hearts and heal their bodies according to Your perfect will. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

Page 8: SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Faith Luth · SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST ... P For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; ... SONG OF PRAISE 10,000 Reasons

8

P Lord, comfort those who mourn the death of loved ones, [especially . . .]. We know that to live is Christ and to die is gain. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, hopeful for His return, our resurrection, and the restoration of all creation. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Finally, Lord, guide Your Church to live in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ, standing firm in unity and truth as a witness to the world of Your light and salvation. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy;

through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and

the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

IN REGARD TO HOLY COMMUNION: According to Scripture, Holy Communion should be celebrated by those who are: United in a common faith (1 Cor. 10:16-17, 21-22; Rom. 16:17); Repentant of sins (1 Cor. 5:11, Matt. 18:17-18); Able to examine their lives (1 Cor. 11:27-29); and believe that in this precious meal they receive the true body and blood of Jesus given and shed for the forgiveness of their sins (Luke 22:19-22). Since Scripture teaches that those people who do not fully understand the meaning of this meal eat and drink to their own harm (1Cor. 11:27-29), and because the Lord’s Supper is the supreme act of stating our unity in faith and doctrine, we would ask those people who are visiting with us to please speak with one of our pastors, before communing, in order that we might fulfill our responsibility of properly instructing people in the right use of the precious Sacrament.

P The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

P In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.

C Amen.

October 1 is the final date each year for submitting names to be engraved in time for dedication on All Saints’ Sunday, the first Sunday in November. This year it is November 5. To date we have had 89 names engraved on the stones. It is a very nice, lasting memorial to family members. If you want to submit a name it must be in to the office by next

Sunday, October 1.

Revelation Bible Study This LifeLight Bible Study of Revelation, led by Bill Markley will begin this Wednesday, September 27. This group will meet in the Young Conference Room (next to the church office) at

6:30 pm. Activity Bags There are activity bags located in the back of the Sanctuary for your young children to use during church. In the bags are coloring books, books, colors, fruit snacks, and scribble sheets. Please pick one up for each child on the way to the pew for your children to use. This should save the blue welcome/communion cards and the bulletin inserts for the purpose they were intended. Thanks for your help in this matter.

Once again it is time to start the new Greeters Schedule. There are a number of openings to be filled. Mostly for the late service. If you would be willing to volunteer let the office know. Also if you no longer wish to participate, please let the office know so we can make changes BEFORE we print the new

schedules. Thank you. Trunk ‘N’ Treat This event is just around the corner. If anyone is interested in helping supplement the candy supply, you may bring candy and put it in the orange box in the office or in the box in the Narthex dedicated for this purpose. Thanks so much!

PRAYERS of all types and sorts:

This week, we pray for those who are stuck. We pray for those who are stuck in sin, those who are stuck in harmful addictions and bad relationships, those who are stuck in doing

things that are outside of what God wants for their life and walk with Jesus Christ. We pray for those who are lost and stuck outside the faith, that God would guide and lead them by the Holy

Spirit and show them The Way. Lord in Your mercy…Hear Our Prayer.
