Celebrating the Fruitfulness of the Word of God

A Redeeming Economy ON BEHALF OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY I want to express great thanks once again this year to Ray and Karin Gawedzinski for their leadership of the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign in our parish and to Bruce Saak for assisting them with the organization of the Appeal. Also, thanks to Anne Schwanz, Ken & Toni Thompson, and Sandy Miesner, our Parish Secretary, for their work processing the gifts and pledges of our parish members.

As a parish and archdiocese we have much to be proud of concerning our commitment to the success of this annual Appeal. Whenever all of our parishes work together to support the pastoral, educational, and charitable ministries of our Church, we always achieve more than any one parish or smaller group of parishes can do alone.

As you can see below we have nearly reached our goal for this year ($54,083). Among all the ways our parish benefits from the Appeal, again this year we have received a $200,000 grant for the operation of our school. In fact, this is support from other parishes who value Catholic education as much as we do. It’s a kind of revenue sharing — always a piece of the foundation of the vitality and success of the Church in our life-times and from the beginning.

Finally, I again want to thank all of our parish members who have prayed for the success of the Appeal and the work of our Church that it supports. And, thank you for any gift or pledge your were able to make, especially if doing so was a sacrifice beyond your already generous financial support for our parish. I pray that you will find much satisfaction in all the ways you give of yourself in support of our Church, that you are proud of our parish, and that your gratitude and joy are a grace in the lives of many who are looking for God in their lives.

JESUS DID NOT COME to teach economics! So when Matthew writes about “haves” and “have nots” the only economy he’s talking about is the economy of salvation where generosity generates wealth and the “blessedness” of the Beatitudes—here and now! Today’s parable reminds us that we must believe what we hear, teach what we believe, and practice what we teach. I must let the Word of God sink deep roots into my life and always remember that I am and we are the seed planted everywhere by God.

Fostering a Spiritual Economy This type of economy presumes a deepening sureness that my life belongs to God. To the extent that I know this, then listening to God and letting God’s Word be fruitful in my life become more important. Three simple questions—if you stay with them over time—can easily foster a spiritual economy:

What did you hear? What will it cost?

What does it promise?

IMPORTANT HOSPITAL NEWS

PLEASE be sure to let us know if you are a friend, relative, neighbor, etc are being admitted to a hospital.

HOW TO HANDLE CUTS AND SCRAPES So many bandages, so little time when you’re bleeding from a small wound. Here’s what to do: ♦ STOP the bleeding. Apply pressure with a clean

cloth or tissue. ♦ AVOID infection. Make sure your hands are

clean before you touch a wound. ♦ DON’T both with antibiotics. Antibiotic oint-

ments can actually irritate the skin or cause al-lergic reaction. Use petroleum jelly. It protects against infection with less chance of allergic re-action.

♦ WRAP it up. Use a small bandage to protect the wound. If you keep the wound clean, remove the bandage after healing starts-exposure to air hasten healing.

Have a wonderful week. S. Rose, SSND.R

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Charlemagne, crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day, 800, had a major interest in shaping the worship life of the church, and began a long period of reform and regulation. We owe many confirmation policies and practices to his rule. A baptized person was required to be confirmed as soon as the bishop’s presence made it possible. Priests were expected to do their best in seeing to it that a newly-baptized child received the Eucharist. One twelfth-century ritual insists that if the child is not yet capable of eating or drinking, then the priest might give him or her some of the Precious Blood on a leaf or a finger. Despite the best efforts of the Empire to hold liturgical life together, the rules were not always lived out with great beauty. St. Richard of Chichester of thirteenth-century England, for example, was canonized for his holy life as a bishop. One of the remarkable signs of his sanctity was his willingness to climb down from his horse to confirm “merely baptized” layfolk who crossed his path! This praiseworthy practice points a finger of blame at less zealous bishops, whose casual attitudes revealed a sacrament in need of rescue. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SUMMARY — STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING JUNE 23, 2014

Christ Light of the Nations Strategic Planning History

When the reorganization of the Northeast County Deanery occurred in 2005, three schools in this area consolidated into Christ Light of the Nations. During the first 2-3 years the school received strong Archdiocesan support for operational grants, an enrollment of 300+ students, and a mix of Catholic / non-Catholic students.

By 2010 changes were occurring. The Archdiocesan grant was withdrawn and it became evident the level of monetary support from the parishes could not remain the same. In order to try to stay ahead of additional changes, development of CLN’s first 3-Year Strategic Plan began in May 2010.

Praise was received for the first planning document presented, but we did not receive any grant money from the Archdiocese. However, we are now in the third year of receiving a $200,000 per year grant.

It is the intent of this committee’s work to generate positive energy, present an accurate picture of the needs of CLN and attract others from outside the parish who would want to see the school continue. People must want to par ticipate in what we have.

We are now shifting to a 3-5 year Plan. The first 3 years will be specific, and will include a general look at the budget for the first 3 years, showing:

• The investment of the 2 parishes in the School • A projection of tuition revenues and tuition assistance

It is our intent to keep CLN an excellent school in every way possible – education, faith formation, programs, faculty, administration, and Board leadership. We clearly show good enrollment, which is a positive. By continuing these positives we will receive the financial support we need.

The new document won’t be an update of the current plan, although there are certain elements in the current plan we will incorporate. Our new document should:

• be well-written (it needs to be good) • get peoples’ attention • be something we promote

We must sustain excellence in every way we can. We must stay focused on excellence.

The Finance Committees and the Parish Councils from both parishes need to be well informed of the work of this group. A summary report will be sent to those committees and a form of that report will be published in the bulletins.

The world is becoming more aware of, and attracted to, the spirituality of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, with their pr inciples and prayer methods, provide a foundation for Jesuit spirituality and outlook. Pope Francis exudes the joy of knowing Jesus, and he views the Gospels in imaginative ways, both reflecting important components of the Spiritual Exercises. The Bridges Foundation will sponsor an information Session for those wishing to explore the Spiritual Exercises at: Saint Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church
