Appre ntice shi ps and Empl oyment

Do you have employability skills?

The Australian government has released the Core Skills for Work Framework. This framework describes ten skill areas (in three skill clusters) that are required to participate effectively in work, whether as an employee, volunteer or self-employed worker. The clusters and skills are listed below.

Cluster 1. Navigate the world of work

a. Manage career and work life

b. Work with roles, rights and protocols

Cluster 2. Interact with others

a. Communicate for work

b. Connect and work with others (team work)

c. Recognise and utilise diverse perspectives

Cluster 3. Get the work done

a. Plan and organise

b. Make decisions

c. Identify and solve problems

d. Create and innovate

e. Work in a digital world

Do a self-assessment of your skill level in these areas on a 1 - 10 (highest) scale. How could you improve your employability skills? Note that these skills are transferable skills that are relevant for all jobs. Go to https://www.education.gov.au/core-skills-work-developmental-framework if you are interested in reading more about the Core Skills for Work Framework.

Example cover letter formats that get you an interview

5

As most job advertisements attract 50 or more applications, your cover letter is important in attracting attention to your application. See http://icover.org.uk/example-cover-letter-format-that-gets-you-an-interview/ for tips to create a great cover letter. Visit http://myfuture.edu.au/getting-started/prepare-to-apply-for-jobs for more tips on cover letters.

Is your career affected by the clothes you wear?

According to a Linkedin article written by Jeff Haden, what you wear may affect your chances of getting a job or a promotion. He says:

In a perfect world your performance is all that would matter. But we don't live in a perfect world. People still make assumptions about us based on irrelevant things like clothing and mannerisms, height and weight and age and gender and ethnicity and tons of other qualities and attributes that have absolutely no bearing on a person's performance.

Labour Market snippets

Australia is creating jobs, just not high paying ones - Australian employment growth has been solid over the past year, running at 2% in the year to August. However, despite being significantly higher than the 0.8% pace recorded in the previous 12 months, almost all of the jobs created have come from lower paying sectors. Read more at http://www.businessinsider.com.au/australia-is-creating-jobs-just-not-high-paying-ones-2015-9.

Graduates from little known unis earn more than some from prestige institutions – See http://www.afr.com/leadership/careers/graduates-from-little-known-unis-earn-more-than-some-from-prestige-institutions-20150916-gjo1kq.

Top strategies for getting an apprenticeship

Your resume – Spend time developing your resume. Include any work experience, part-time work and a list of your skills. If you have undertaken hands-on subjects at school (e.g. Furnishing, Business, Tourism, Creative Arts) you will have many tool and/or process skills. These and other subjects also help you develop communication, teamwork, organisational, time management and computing skills. Skills you genuinely believe you have should be listed, with examples of how you have used them (ask your parents and teachers if you have trouble identifying your skills). Don’t forget to include names and contact information for referees (people who are willing to talk to a potential employer about your skills, aptitudes, and attitudes). Visit http://myfuture.edu.au/getting-started/prepare-to-apply-for-jobs for resume tips and examples.

6

Networking friends and family - Tell people you know that you are looking for an apprenticeship. They might know a potential employer (or they might be a potential employer).

Cold canvassing door-to-door – Visit potential employers. Practice your greeting and handshake before you go (look neat and friendly). Ask if you can leave a resume in case anything comes up. It is a good idea to call in a second time so the employer knows you are keen.

Work experience – If an employer can’t take you on as an apprentice at this time, ask if it is possible to do unpaid work experience with them. This experience will give the employer an opportunity to see the type of worker you are. It can be added to your resume and if the employer is impressed with your attitude and skills, they may contact you in the future when they are looking for a new apprentice.

Pre-apprenticeship courses – Many of these are offered by TAFE Queensland SkillsTech (telephone 1800 654 447; web http://tafeskillstech.edu.au/). These courses can cut time off the apprenticeship period. They make you more useful to an employer because you already have some skills before you start your apprenticeship. It is a good idea to put in an expression of interest to SkillsTech for courses starting in 2016.

Group training organisations – These organisations employ groups of apprentices and hire them out to host employers. For more information, visit the Group Training Australia website at http://www.grouptraining.com.au/.

Australian Apprenticeship Support Network - Search for a provider located near you at http://www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/find-my-aasn/full-list or ring the infoline at 13 38 73

Occupational Informati on

More than pretty pictures: A career in graphic design

The following is an excerpt from an article written by Molly Wiltshire-Bridle and Mike Kermode.

Contrary to popular opinion, graphic design involves much more than the ability to put together pretty pictures. It requires attention to technical detail as well as a raft of problem-solving skills, from those that are strictly rational, analytical and objective, to those that are inspired, artistic and subjective. It also requires the ability to follow a brief and meet a deadline – because ultimately, it’s about delivering what clients want, when they want it.

You can read the rest of this article from the Career FAQs website at http://www.careerfaqs.com.au/news/news-and-views/more-than-pretty-pictures-a-career-in-graphic-design/. Find out more about graphic design, including work conditions and requirements and courses on the myfuture website at http://www.myfuture.edu.au. The Sign, Graphic and Digital Print Careers website at http://www.signcareers.com.au/ is another good resource for this occupational field.
