Reflection:

Jesus sends his disciples away in the boat while He goes by himself alone to pray. They are out on the open and the boat was being "tossed by the waves for the wind was against it." At dawn Jesus comes to them walking on water. When they saw Him, they were terrified but Jesus tells them, “Courage, Do not be afraid. It’s me!” Peter asks Jesus, “Command me to come to you” and Jesus says, “Come.” Things went well for Peter but it did not last. He did walk on the water, he could do it! But when he saw the violence of the storm and his own inadequacy, the fear returned and he started sink-ing. He looked at himself and at his impossible situation instead of relying on Jesus’ word. As soon as he began to sink, he cried out, "Lord save me!" He was saved. The whole crisis came about because of a lack of faith. He should never have doubted. Peter started sinking when he might have thought to himself, who am I to walk on water, this is impossible. Being impulsive, he often acted without thinking. He did not study all the angles. He did not count the cost of discipleship and of leadership in the church. Still we are happy with him for there are traits which are much worse, like being too cautious which freezes all activity and gets nothing done.
