Remember your very first Skateboard? How it felt sailing down the sidewalk for the very first time? It is these very memories that we pass on to children of very needy foundation economies like Eastern and Southern Africa and of course Aboriginal groups within Australia.

RECYCLEDFUN has been an incredible story of need necessitating supply. Setting up global supply chain to allow used skate boards to flow into Ethiopia and South Africa took some doing to secure all pathways and to realise a non profit exchange. With a sudden influx of skate gear hitting Ethiopia to be given to children the concern was

highlighted that if unaware children were to be gifted with skate gear, untrained and all of a sudden were sailing through public areas in shopping centers, car parks and public roadways in Addis Ababa and the Police felt public safety was jeopardized, the whole Skate initiative could be shut down and skateboarding outlawed. So an agreement has been struck with the Ethiopian Police to hold public safety and skate training clinics for children over two days. Held as a cooperative between the Ethiopian Police Force and SKATEWORKS, the children will be certified as street safety aware and awarded with a certificate and pass from SKATEWORKS and the Ethiopian Police. Once the children are certified over the two days they will be gifted with their board from RECYCLEDFUN.

The First Skateboarding Marathon in Eastern Africa

A MILLION REASONS TO SKATE

1500km. Skating the length of a Kingdom

1500km of Pre history ruins, castles and carved stone rock churches through urban developed Addis Ababa and onto ancient tribal Ethiopia and her peoples.Culminating at the most southern point of the Omo National Park near the Kenyan boarder. This epic journey is to raise awareness and one million dollars in funds to build SKATEWORKS, The Ethiopian Skateboard Park Project’s Vocational co-educational school for Ethiopian street children. This huge longboard trek will be undertaken by The founder of the project, Jon Burns, Outreach Manager Dawit Legesse and Outreach logistics Manager Tom Noonan. We are all in solid training on bike and board for this endurance test. Dawit and Tom are currently training in the hills and mountains of Ethiopia and cross training on long boards, Mountain bikes and running. Jon Burns is beating the pavements and roads of the northern beaches of Sydney and recording our build up for this event. The boys will all come together in a few short weeks to skate from Bondi Beach Sydney Australia 300km by road to Canberra Australia’s Capital city. Bondi Beach apart from being an Australian icon of beach culture is the site for one of the worlds best skate comps, Bowlaramma. Drawing Pro skaters like Steve Caballero, Eddie Alguera, Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist and current world champion Pedro Barros, just to name a few. The Canberra run is a trial run, just to settle in and iron out the bugs, because when we on the 1500km we are on our own. 1500km of Lions, Hippos, historical ruins and smooth tar. When I found out there were lions I made an executive decision. The other two guys are sleeping near the door lol. The three of us are shooting GOPRO helmet vids of our training from limp unfit desk jockeys to heart thumping muscle bound skate maniacs.

Kingdom of Aksum

Imperial Gondar

Our trip begins in the Kingdom of Aksum, the very northern tip of Ethiopia. Aksum, for hundreds of years had itʼs own written language called Geʼez. Geʼez is the language of the Ethiopian Orthodox priests. The Aksumite kingdom stretches back to 200 BC and is littered with giant obelisks. it is said that the ark of the covenant in which the ten commandments are held is secreted there.

We then ride on to Gondar . In each of our destinations skate clinics will be run with the local kids and youth in correlation with schools and youth associations of that area. Gondar is a fascinating place in the north of Ethiopia. Gondar was founded by Emperor Fasilides around the year 1635, with an elevation of 2133 meters above sea level. The city is nicknamed "The Camelot of Africa" due

Lalibela, Solid Rock Hewn Churches

The majority of the journey will be done on long boards but uphill sections will don by Mountain Bike, what goes up must come down as they say. Lalibela is a town in northern Ethiopia that is famous for its monolithic rock-cut churches. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and is a center of pilgrimage for much of the country. GO PRO Cameras between the three of us will be mounted to our helmets and a full documentary team will be shooting the land based elements of the documentary. The documentary will be shot with a view to capturing the story of Ethiopia, itʼs hybrid peoples, cultural destinations and the plight of the Ethiopian street children throughout the Urban and regional areas from north to south.

SKATEWORKS

SKATEWORKSis a multi educationalprogram developed by the Ethiopian Skateboard ParkProject. SKATEWORKS is achildrenʼs development project group devoted to the development of co-educational learning facilitiesfor Ethiopian street children in

Ethiopia built around skateboarding with an intense concentration on vocational learning to help street children gain the skills to be self sustaining and employable. Our central project is the construction of a school for Ethiopian street children that bridges the gap between the street

and organised education. SKATEWORKS will consist of a school built around a skateboard park that also provides daily English, IT, General Trade, art, Music Production and of course motivational skateboarding classes within our skateboard park on site. It is the combination

of these skills that willhelp street children to gain employment, feel positive about themselves and give them the communication and goal setting skills to move forward into formal education and to earn a living as a functional part of Ethiopian society. The motivational aspect of skateboarding and having

the motivational aspect of skateboarding and having a place specifically designed for youth and by youth is in drastic need so as to give unity and connection for children and youth in a continent like Africathat is ever dividing. The more commonground we can create with youth, thestronger the foundation for oneEthiopia. "Together we ride, dividedwe fall" laying a solid foundationfor effecting change by childrenand youth rolling on commonground. "Skate brothers" instead of socially distant,disconnected youth whoare suffering through ethnic and economic barriers. Connectingbeyond all there differences with onepowerful and simpletool, the skateboard.The little wooden bridge for children that builds the foundations for thegrowth of one Ethiopia and a safe,prosperous place tolive. There is no point constructing hospitals and educational facilities only. You need a foundation of unified strength of which to buildthis on. A Meseret as theysay in Amharic ( Ethiopian),it means foundation stone. Around a central Skateboard facility we are then able to attach language and educational facilities that motivate and give youth the tools to reach there goals and set even higher ones. No matter what ethnic background or what part of Ethiopia they come from. Addis Ababa is 3500 meters above sea level so " Unity out of thin air"By providing this home base for street children thatgives an identity over and above just cleaning shoes

to merely stay alive, SKATEWORKS providesa place where street children are not just

classified by their financial of living status.By having an education facility that can

change when the children need it tochange is of tremendous benefit

to the community as a whole.While SKATEWORKS isalready training up young

Ethiopian coaches to workfull time in SKATEWORKS

through our outreachprogram. We in turn negotiating with the

Australian governmentand plan to do the with the US government for

school age children from both these

children from westerncountries to fly intoAddis Ababa as a

group to act as skatecoaches to our kids

in a co-life valueexchange so as to

increase the value to western children, their

values and their view ofthe world of which we

know is something thatAustralian and American

families dearly want in theirchildren. this value exchange

exchange allows us to bringAustralian and American youth

across even at the point of skate parkconstruction so as a part of the NSW

Government initiative to allow Australianchildren to continue their apprenticeships

while remaining at school that they could be involved in the pour of the cement, spraying the walls

for the park, finishing and the placement of the coping. This would give Australian and American students interested in construction

International experience with NORD our swedish skate park construction team and our co- Australian, Ethiopian,American construction crew. This element

is in negotiation with the Australian and American Government at this time and is also pending view points and needs of parents of which we are poling at the present time.

Girls Skate school

GIRL POWER SKATE CLUB is an exciting new addition to SKATEWORKS Outreach program in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. A program concentrating on the motivational needs of young girls and using the asperational and confidence building aspects of Skateboarding. Girl power skate club is headed up by myself, Wosene Haile and I am an Ethiopian woman living in Addis Ababa. I am very interested in motivating young women in Ethiopia and I am a very proud member of the SKATEWORKS team. Every week we run regular skate clinics throughout the different areas of Addis Ababa. Some of the distinct areas I like to concentrate on is shyness and general confidence. Girls doing sport in Ethiopia has a long history and especially in running as we have just seen in the London Olympics, but apart from that they take a supportive role in the home as they grow up and mature in readiness for the work force and marriage. A young girls upbringing is centered around the home with many duties of Coffee making, going out to buy bread for breakfast in the early morning and houshold chores. The boys do not get off scott free by any means but most of the domestic tasks fall upon the girls. So we have looked at all thatwe intend to do and you may ask “whatare we doing now” We we certainly have been busy.SKATEWORKS Outreach program runs weekly skateclasses for underprivileged and street children in Addis AbabaEthiopia. We have a number of full time members of SKATEWORKSand two trainee skate coaches from Addis Ababa in Abenezer Temesgen and Little Henock. We currently run regular school groups and with our girls coach, Wosene Haile, we run ourGIRL POWER girls skate club to empower and motivateyoung Ethiopian girls. with great support from international skateboarding companies like Element, Green Issue,Venice Originals, Raised by wolves, Skater HQ and TIMZ skateboards in the states. We have been able tonot only hold but sustain a regular skate educational

Program on a weekly basis. We now have a presence on daily childrenʼs Ethiopian TV

shows and radio programing throughout the each and every day. even when the SKATEWORKS school is establishedand constructed the OUTREACH program will travel to outlining

areas of Addis Ababa to continue the Skate2U methodology currently adopted by our project. this project is a thorough joy

to be involved in and we would like to thank all our Facebook friends and stakeholders around the world for their undying support,

motivational advice, and continuing belief in what we are doing. You inspire us as much as we may inspire you. We are very

proud to be the very first Ethiopian skateboarding schooland for that matter, the very first skateboarding school in
