Math Bones number mats -
Use Q-Tip “bones” to
make numbers on the
number mats. Talk
about number for-
mation during this
activity.
Bone patterns - Use Q-
Tip “bones” to make
patterns. The Q-Tips
could be used vertically
or horizontally to make
patterns. Dye them with
liquid watercolors or
food coloring, as an
alternate option.
Number of bones - Add
the correct amount of
Q-Tip “bones” to the
human body printables.
Bone shapes - Make
shapes using Q-Tip or
shell “bones”.
Connecting numbers -
Connect the bone
numbers in order,
starting with 0. Use Q-Tip
“bones” to connect the
cards.
Skeleton
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science The Skeleton Song - Sing
and dance along to the
song. Discuss each
bone that’s mentioned
in the song. (TF)
Nonfiction skeleton
books - Choose a few
non-fiction skeleton
books to read. Record
interesting tidbits in a
science journal.
Keeping bones healthy
- Brainstorm a list of
things to do in order to
keep bones healthy.
Fizzing bones - Use bak-
ing soda and water to
make frozen bones.
Shape them with hands
or use a special ice
cube tray. Then use
vinegar to dissolve the
bones. Refer to this post
for a more specific
“recipe.”
Skeleton puzzle - Make
a skeleton puzzle out of
black and white felt.
Alternatively, use the
skeleton printable to
make a puzzle. (TF)
Literacy Make letters - Use Q-Tip
“bones” to form letters.
Use the printable bone
letters as a reference.
Skeleton names - Write
name on black
construction paper with
a white crayon. Glue Q-
Tips and Q-Tip pieces to
make X-Ray names.
Bone letters - Connect
the printable skeleton
letters in alphabetical
order, using Q-Tip
“bones” to connect
them.
Skeleton word-making -
Use letter tiles or
magnetic letters to
make words.
Emergent reader - Print
out and assemble the
easy reader about
opposites. Talk about
opposites, and then
read the book together.
Extend the activity by
coming up with more
opposites.
Other Skeleton designs - Use
black paper and white
crayons to create
skeleton drawings.
Alternatively, make a
life size version. (TF)
Play dough skeletons -
Use black play dough
and various accessories
to create skeletons.
Pasta skeletons - Set out
different pasta shapes
to act as bones. Make
skeletons using the
pasta.
Skeleton sensory bottle -
Add black beans and
pasta shapes to a
clean, empty bottle.
Play dough operation -
Place pieces of pasta
“bones” in play dough.
Use tweezers or tongs to
remove or fix the bones.
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their
own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by
subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Number Bones - Match the
printable number cards to the
correct amount of “bones” (Q
-tips or pasta pieces).
Bone Tallies - Use Q-Tip
“bones” with printable
numbers. Practice making tally
marks with the Q-Tips.
Literacy
Bone Letters - Using the
printable letters as a guide,
make letters with “bones” (Q-
tips or pasta pieces).
Alphabet Puzzles - Put the skel-
etons together again by
matching uppercase and low-
ercase letters.
Science
Orthopedist Dramatic Play -
Pretend to be an orthopedic
doctor. Examine patients’
bones. Use the printable
skeleton checklist, and add in
an adult’s white button down
shirt as the doctor’s lab coat.
(TF)
X-Rays and Bones - If possible,
place real x-rays and/or
animal bones out for study
and exploration.
Sensory
Skeleton Sensory Bin - Add
black beans to a sensory bin.
Place Q-Tips or pasta pieces
into the bin to act as “bones”.
Extend the activity by adding
skeleton letters or numbers to
the bin. (TF)
Assemble the Skeleton Bin -
Place your favorite black sen-
sory material into a bin. Add
the skeleton puzzle pieces.
Children search and assemble
the puzzle.
Block Play
Build a Skeleton - Attach
skeleton parts to different
blocks and assemble a block
skeleton. Alternatively, use
blocks of varying sizes to make
a skeleton on the floor. Consult
non-fiction books for inspira-
tion. (TF)
LEGO Skeletons - Use LEGO
bricks to make small skeletons.
Arts and Crafts
Torn Paper Skeleton Art - Tear
white paper into strips and
small pieces. Use the pieces to
make skeleton art on black
construction paper. (TF)
Skeleton Watercolor Art - Use
a white crayon to draw skele-
tons on white paper. Press
down firmly. Paint over the
drawings with black watercol-
ors to make the skeletons ap-
pear.
Print out the uppercase and lowercase
skeleton letters. We suggest laminating
the cards for durability.
These cards can be used in a huge variety
of early literacy activities:
• Match the lowercase letters to the
uppercase letters.
• Pair the uppercase letters with
cotton swabs. Children can use the
cotton swabs to make bone letters.
• Use the cards as a reference for
making skeleton names.
• Create an alphabet skeleton by
connecting the letters in
alphabetical order (link with cotton
swabs).

Print out multiple copies of this
checklist. Add them to the pretend
play area, along with pens/pencils,
and clipboards.
Can also be laminated and used with
dry erase markers.
Children can use the checklists as
they pretend to be
orthopedic doctors/nurses.
Children could also use this
checklist to write the first
letter they hear for each
body part on the skeleton.

Number of Bones Choose which “x-ray” number cards you would like to
use. We suggest laminating the cards so they’re more
durable.
Have the children add the correct number
of “bones” (cotton swabs or pasta pieces)
to each number card. Encourage them to go
back and count the bones to make sure the
amount is correct.

“This Bone” Emergent Reader
Print out the emergent reader about opposites.
To assemble, fold pages in half with text facing out. Arrange
the pages, and staple along the left-hand side.
Introduce the book to the children. Take a
look through the book and discuss each page.
Talk about opposites, and see if the children
can come up with other opposites.
Keep the books to reread together!
