12 November- World Pneumonia Day

Pneumonia is the single biggest infectious killer of children, claiming over 800,000 lives annually. Yet pneumonia remains a neglected disease. And the numbers are coming down far too slowly to achieve the 2030 ambition of ending preventable child deaths. World Pneumonia Day provides an annual forum for the world to stand together and demand action in the fight against pneumonia

14 Novemeber- World Diabetes Day

14-22 November - Alopecia Awareness Week

Alopecia Areata is an auto-immune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. It can range from small, individual smooth patches of hair loss, to total loss of all hair on the body – including ear and nose hair. Alopecia Areata is not uncommon, and current estimates suggest that 2% of the population will be affected by the condition at some point in their lifetime. AAAF believe that through personal support, improved awareness, and ongoing research toward an acceptable treatment, we can help improve the lives of people living with Alopecia Areata and their families. Visit https://aaaf.org.au/ to donate hair or funds for this incredible cause.

17 November - World Prematurity Day

Every year, 15 million babies are born premature worldwide. More than one million of these babies die, and many more face serious, lifelong health challenges. Preterm birth is truly a problem that can happen to every one of us, irrespective of the country we live in, our culture or socioeconomic status. World Prematurity Day aims to raise awareness of preterm birth and the concerns of preterm babies and their families worldwide.

Q & A with Magda Kozicki

Magda is a wonderful past student of ours, who studied the Diploma of Nursing as part of group 1/18 at our Knox campus. She finished up with us in January 2020 and is now studying the Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University. Magda has also recently secured a job at Knox Private Hospital, working as an EEN on their Neurological and Orthopaedic ward. Congratulations Magda on your incredible achievements!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of working as a nurse?

There are many rewarding aspects of working as a nurse, it's knowing that every day you go

to work that you'll make a difference in someone's life and the bonds you build with the

patients/residents that You work with, most of all is following a patients journey to

discharge knowing you played and important role in that patients recovery.

Is there a particular area of Nursing that interests you?

I have always been interested in mental health nursing, however now that i work on a

neurological and Orthopaedic ward i would like to specialise in neuro nursing.

How did you go about securing a job in the field?

I was working as a Personal Carer in aged care before i applied to study the Diploma of

Nursing, I believe the experience has given me invaluable and transferable skills to become

the nurse I am today. I applied to many employers through seek and indeed, as well as going

on friends word of mouth this helped me secure my first job as an EEN in aged care after i

gained some experience I applied through various organisations on the careers sections, my

original position at Knox Private was meant to be working on a Covid ward however by the

time it took to go through recruitment there were no longer Covid affected patients. I had

my cover letter professionally looked over and edited by someone who specialises in

nursing cover letters and re wrote my cv to highlight my strengths and everything nursing

related.

Would you recommend the Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University?

I do recommend Deakin, they are very supportive, they give one trimester credit for the

Diploma unlike other unis that give one year, however it has been a great refresher to go

through patient assessment techniques as well as IV priming and reconstituting IV

antibiotics.

What study methods or techniques have helped you through your studies?

Reading through the slides for the particular session before hand as well as after, ensuring

to attend all scheduled classes and being prepared, putting in the hours to do further

readings from prescribed books. Trying to explain the skill or what i learned in the session to

a friend who's not a nurse or doesn't study with me i found helps as it stays in your mind if

you need to explain it. Bouncing ideas off my EEN team leaders and RNs at work. Ensuring

that I started all workbooks and assignments early or as soon as they were released so that I

would have plenty of time to fill in knowledge gaps.

Do you have any advice you would give to our current STA students?

Make the most of your placements, grab every opportunity that arises to get skills signed

off, after aged care placement grab the opportunity to work as a Personal Carer as many of

my group did - this will help cement basic nursing skills such as assisting with ADLs and

communication skills. Be punctual to classes and placement, get in the habit of informing

either STA or placement providers if unwell or unable to attend as these are very

transferable employable skills. Get references from your buddy nurses or unit managers

early in your placements, if you find a placement you enjoy have your CV ready to hand in to

the unit manager for future. Most of all seek help from your trainers if lost and stuck in

questions i found STA supportive in this way. It's not the end of the world if you don't secure

a graduate year.

Thai Red Curry Recipe

Ingredients

▪ 1 tbsp vegetable oil

▪ 1 tbsp ginger & garlic paste ▪ 5-6 tbsp red curry paste ▪ 800ml coconut milk ▪ 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into large

chunks ▪ kaffir lime leaves (ideally fresh) ▪ 2 tbsp fish sauce ▪ 1 tsp brown sugar ▪ ½ small pack Thai basil ▪ basil or coriander, plus extra to serve ▪ 1 red chilli, sliced diagonally ▪ thumb-sized piece ginger, cut into matchsticks ▪ cooked jasmine rice, to serve

Method

STEP 1 Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat and fry 1 tbsp ginger and 1 tbsp garlic paste for 2 mins. Add 5-6 tbsp red curry paste, sizzle for a few secs, then pour in 800ml coconut milk. STEP 2 Bring to the boil, reduce to a simmer, stir a little and wait for the oil to rise to the surface. STEP 3 Add 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into chunks, and kaffir lime leaves, and simmer for 12 mins or until the chicken is cooked through. STEP 4 Add 1 tbsp of the fish sauce and a pinch of brown sugar, then taste – if you like it a little saltier, add more fish sauce; if you like it sweeter, add a little more sugar. STEP 5 Bring to the boil, take off the heat and add ½ small pack Thai basil.
