Skills Development for my Cover Page

Strengths:• My magazine cover sticks to

the brief and is a conventional indie/ rock music magazine.

• Both the masthead and the main image are striking and stand out to the audience.

• The background looks very indie rock like as it is somewhere a stereotypical indie rock artist will go.

• The cover lines are conventional around the main cover star and include a wide range of famous music artists that the will be drawn into.

• The colour scheme relates to the music genre in being indie rock.

Weaknesses.• There is no price

presented on the music magazine so the

audience don’t know how much it is.

• The positioning statement isn’t that big

and isn’t something that will draw the audience

into the magazine.

What did I find easy?• The cover lines and the rest of the text was

particularly easy because after coming up with the ideas, I then proceeded to type them in and put them in a conventional font that is eye catching. Changing the colour and the drop shadow I believe was a relatively easy job because I learned to do it in the preliminary task so all I needed to do was to apply it to this cover.

• Taking the photo of the main cover star. I used Emily and she already fits the specification wearing black to appeal to the target audience and the guitar matches the cloths which really helped.

• The font for the masthead was easy to find on dafont.com and gives an accurate stereotype of the genre with parts missing giving the connotation of brokenness.

What did I find difficult?• Finding a good background was a task that I

found difficult, with background for the picture taken for the main cover star looked like it was taken at a school or collage, so I found an ally way in the village I lived in and getting the perfect angle so it didn’t look out of place was also a bit difficult.

• Deciding on a good positioning statement wasn’t easy because I was struggling to think as well as finding a good font and in the end I believe that it looks better with a normal/ plain font like Ariel.

The main tools that I used in Photoshop and Why?

I used the pen tool to cut out the main cover star from my original picture, this allowed me to get a better background

The text tool allowed me to create text for my cover lines, masthead, positioning statement and the rest of the text. The shape tool was used to create the banner at the bottom of the magazine cover

The masthead is more professional and fits the genre of the magazine more than in my preliminary assessment. In my first one the masthead doesn’t stand out to the audience as it looks bland where as my final product looks professional fits the conventions. In my preliminary task the cover lines blend into the background and don’t stand out to the target audience.
