Understand the difference between skimming and scanning

To be able to use skimming and scanning strategies when doing comprehension.

Scanning

Searching for keywords, ideas or a particular answer.

Involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking for specific words and phrases.

Strategies

Look for organizers such as: numbers , letters ,steps ,words ,first , second or next.

Look for words that are bold faced ,italics ,words in a different font size ,style , or colour.

Skimming

Enable us to quickly identify the main ideas of the text.

Skimming is done at a speed 3 to 4 times faster than normal reading.

Skim when we have lots of materials to read in a limited time.

Strategies

Read the headings ,titles ,subtitles and illustrations.

Read the 1st and the last paragraph. Read the 1st and the last sentence

of the same paragraph.
