a text typeface for academic useSkolar is a text serif which has been originally designed with scholarly and multilingual publications in mind. e typeface maintains its credibility while incorporating a subtle personal style, neither neutral nor conspicuous. Prominent serifs and low-contrast modulation add to its robustness, and together with relatively large x-height, they improve the typeface readability in small sizes. Skolar family of six weights and large character set is flexible enough for complex text settings and editorial work. It becomes distinctive in bigger sizes, thus fitting corporate design demands.

ere have been quite a few practical solutions introduced in the typeface. Here are some of greater importance: e capitals are rather low in comparison to the ascenders to give the typeface even texture and more space for capital diacritical marks. e structure of the typeface is strictly conventional, but the stroke modulation stylistically reflects on contemporary serifs. e italic has a shallow angle and large counters for better readability in small print. It is easily recognized but not ostentatious; it blends well with the uprights. Semibold is weighted to emphasize text blocks, where Bold is intended for word clusters. e family includes a complex set of smart arrows which can be easily keyed and combined in infinite ways using opentype features. It includes fleurons.

Skolar has already received international recognition at the ed-Awards competition 2008 and was selected as one of the best typefaces of 2008 by i love typography.

the designerDavid Březina, born in Brno, Czech Republic, graduated in Informatics at the Masaryk University in Brno in 2005, spent a term at the Denmarks Designskole in Copenhagen in 2004 and graduated with distinction from the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading (uk) in 2007. From 2004 to 2007 he also ran his own design studio davi, with projects in graphic, web and interface design.

He currently works as an independent typeface/graphic designer and as an associate with Tiro

9/11 pt (bodytext), 11/11 pt (title)

Typeworks (Canada). He is sporadic writer (Typo magazine, iLT) and lecturer who hopes to do more book design.

typetogetherVeronika Burian and José Scaglione met at the University of Reading whilst completing their MAs in Type Design, launching the independent type foundry TypeTogether (tt for short) in 2006. TT developed out of the desire to publish high quality typefaces and work on new type projects together (hence the name). e foundry provides common grounds for intense cooperation with other type designers, creating an interesting and diverse platform.

TypeTogether’s main interest is finding innovative and stylish solutions to old problems for the professional market of text typefaces, with a focus on editorial use. is is where the greatest challenges are faced: creating typefaces that perform well in continuous reading, that also have a high degree of personality.

e aesthetic and functional efficiency of tt’s fonts are accompained by excellence in technical performance. is is achieved using the latest font software, creating cross-platform Opentype fonts with extended character sets including: broader language support and all kinds of typographic refinements, such as small caps, ligatures and multiple numeral sets.

In addition to TypeTogether’s high quality library of retail fonts, tt also provides custom modifications and specially tailored typefaces; these can serve as vital elements of a company’s visual identity, by communicating a unique feel. Custom typeface projects are developed from solid foundations, based on the client’s brief, targeted research and the open dialogue between all parties.

A big advantage of being a small and specialized company is that this allows for closer, and more direct, collaboration with clients; this is often necessary to accomplish their goals, and respond quickly to their needs.

e quality of TypeTogether’s work has already been recognized in several international competitions, including TdC and ed-Awards.

Národní divadlo zaalo s vydáváním cd v roce 2002, po nástupu nového ředitele Daniela Dvořáka, který do funkce šéfa opery přizval svého dřívějšího kolegu ze Státní opery Praha Jiřího Nekvasila. První vydanou operou byl Mozartův Don Giovanni, vyšly i živé nahrávky Zprávy pro aka-demii Jana Klusáka, Smolkovo Nagano a další. Zatím poslední je komplet s nah-rávkou mimořádného provedení Prstenu Nibelungova od Richarda Wagnera, které vzbudilo velkou pozornost na scéně před 2 lety. “cd slouží jako dokumentace, propagace opery Národního divad-la, je k dispozici knihovnám...” říká Jiří Nekvasil. V průběhu pěti let se objevovala i díla českých autorů, například Dvořákův Čert a Káča. “V současné době ty nah-rávací společnosti, které to kdysi dělaly, jako třeba Supraphon, které nahrávaly a dokumentovaly celou jednu generaci, dnes asi z finančních důvodů opery netočí. Je to idea, která nás napadla už v našem působení ve Státní opeře, že v době, kdy zachytit hlas a umělecký výkon je technicky poměrně jednoduché, tu celá gen-erace zůstane nezdokumentovaná.

Zwolennicy pomysłu odpierają ten zarzut: podobne szkoły funkcjonują w USA i wielu krajach UE. W Polsce dziś jest jedna taka placówka –Gimnazjum i Liceum Akademickie. Oblegane od 1998 r. przez uczniów, działa przy UMK w Toruniu. – Znam osiągnięcia szkoły w Toruniu, jest świetna – mówi prof.
