The Brief

With Typography as the focus, create an advertising campaign to encourage more people to communicate through the program Skype.

Skype brings people together

The possibility of creating a typeface to reflect the reasons why you should use Skype with the audience in mind.

Considering different forms of advertising including ambient styles and deliverable print media.

Output for both screen and print to create a flexible concept.

ClearApproachableHuman/naturalHonest.

Skype has more than 338 million registered users globally who use Skype software to communicate for free through voice and video calls as well as in-stant messages. Skype offers premium services to customers such as calls to and from landlines and mobiles. Conversations can take place on computers, mobile devices, and Skype hardware. There are hundreds of third party devel-opers who have created plug-ins to extend Skype’s functionality.

Design Practice 3 - OUGD203 - Deadline Friday 28th May - BA(Hons.) Graphic Design - Level 5 - Luke Hallam

Development. Trial and Errors.

Creating the typefaces was largely a case of trial and error, if the context was relevant and if the type was readable on a variety of scales. Some typefaces were ditched and some developed to be applied in context. The typefaces varied between medium directed type and recreating existing typefaces, and which suited the medium best.

The final 3 Type composition to be applied into context and distributed in a variety of forms.

Chocolate dusted Helvetica typeface.

Skype has the ability to allow interaction and gossip in a short amount of time. With the intimacy of a friendly chat over a coffee, this type composition has been created using the same dusting technique used in coffee shops on a variety of drinks.

Bottle-cap Century Gothic typeface.

The Flexibility of Skype’s many functions allows to bring your friends together really easily for nights out and socializing. Combining Voice, video and text chat with file sharing (possibly pub locations and bars) allows for Skype to plan your night out with your friends. The Bottle-cap type composition is utilizing what would usually a waste, into a visual piece of communication.

Medium directed train ticket typeface.

In this world, keeping in touch hasn’t been more important when travelling. Keeping in touch with love ones, or relying on clients and co-workers, communicating hasn’t been easier through skype. With a variety of mobile platforms to use, Skype can be used to communicate through both land-lines and internet enabled devices easily. So you can be there for someone, when you are not.

Bottle-cap Century Gothic typeface Context.

As an advertising campaign as adshells featuring Ambient and disposable printed media. Applying the created typeface into context re-enforces its placement and the printed media. The ad itself is focused around the beermat format to apply visuals to. The 6 beermat composition would be left on empty tables, and encourage the phrase to be completed as a puzzle, symbolising the ‘bringing of people together’

The reverse of the beermats would feature a space to write your own Skype details to share with people you meet when socialising and again, re-enforce the phrase ‘Bringing People Together’.

Chocolate dusted Helvetica typeface.

The context of the Chocolate dusted type would be as a supplement in a magazine, either bought or found in cof-fee shops. The left side would feature a similar contextual advert featuring the typeface in situation and the right hand side would be the disposable media.

On the right hand side is a selection of tear-out business sided cards to share your skype information with friends and people you meet. An addition to the cards is a small cut out of ‘skype’ to dust your own drinks, reflected in the typefaces original inspiration.

Placement and Screen based distribution.

The 3 final typefaces have been created to work on a variety of scales through development. Web banners have been created and applied to relevant websites depending on the nature of the typeface.

To utlise the web hosting of sites, the banners work as a set over the entire site, applied to a variety of shapes and functions, including an animated gif.

Media directed train ticket typeface

The train ticket typeface works to its full potential in context when applied to transport and adshells in particular places including stations, bus stops and underground routes.
