    Twinkling Blue Eyes

All I want for Christmas... is myDad to come home for my birthday in May, and my brother tocome back safe to spend "guytime" with me in the garage. Those are the wishes of two sixthgraders at San Onofre School.Victoria (Tori) Sego and DavidGarlipp sat down with me in frontof an oversized map of the world

and talked frankly about theirthoughts and fears about being amilitary child while having aloved one deployed to Afghanistan. Their blue eyes shined andtwinkled with emotion when expressing what they missed themost about their deployed fatherand brother. However, they became almost apologetic when aglimpse of self-pity came up intheir speech. They were maturebeyond their years; their resilience, sense of pride and understanding of the situation at hand

was honorable. As children ofMarines serving in a war tomcountry, both children spoke of afeeling of being left behind. Yet itwas evident that they had developed an incredible stoicism thatrivaled their military loved ones. 1sat humbly in front of these children, purely listening to theirupbeat account of being a militarychild. A sense of respect andadmiration came pouring downinto my mundane Friday morning.Their positive attitude, deeply-feltpatriotism and sense of pride for

being connected to the militarywere inspiring. Below are theirthoughts and wishes for this Holiday season:S.L.What ar e some of the benefits of being a military child? An d the worstT.S. Go to different places. Getdiscounts on amusement parks.

Talk to friends about commonthings such as parents ranks anddeployments. Worst: My daddeploying a lot and missing ourbirthdays.D.G. To be able to see military"things" and be involved inYoung Marines.Worst: My brother being deployed and training for long

periods of time.S.L. What has been your favorite place to live and whatdo you like the best aboutCamp Pendleton?T.S. I loved 29 Palms. Alwayswarm and people were very nicethere. What I like the most atCPen is the beach and that Ihave lots of friends.

D.G. I like CPen a lot becauseit has lots of beaches, sandbarsand a surf camps.S.L. What do you miss themost about your deployed

father/brother?T.S. Hanging out with him because he jokes a lot and hespoils me. Him helping mymom with my brothers so thatshe has more time to spend withme and take me to soccer. 1

have to take rides from mycoach now. But I am used to it.D.G. I miss "guy time" in thegarage fixing our dirt bikes andcars.S.L. Wh o do you talk to whenyou get worried about yourfather/brother?T.S. I talk tomy best friend Maddie becauseI've known her for a long time

and she understands what I amtalking about. I also talk to myMom.D.G. I talk to my sister, becauseI get worried when he goes onmissions. But my sister says hehas been deployed many timesand nothing has happened before so he will be fine this timetoo.S.L.What are your wishes forthe upcoming Christmas season?T.S. Wish for Dad to come backhome for my birthday and be

able to visit family in Washington.D.G. I wish my brother comeshome for Christmas to be herewhen my sister has her baby andmaybe get another dirt bike.

Extraordinary acts of kindness andgenerosity can be generated fromhear tbreaking tragedy. Such is thecase with Mr. George Meyers; fatherand founder of The Joey MeyersFoundation. Last spring, I had thegood fortune to pick up the phoneand speak to Mr. George Meyers. This gentleman is a determined, outgoing individual who connectedwith our office to gain assistance fo rhis benevolen t quest. His goal wasto organize a fundraiser to benefitmilitary children in his son, Joey's,memory. Mr. Meyers wanted tohonor Joey's generous spiri t and joyfor living. During Joey's shor t life,he continually showed compassionfo r others which motivated his dy

namic father to establish this foundation.

"The Joey Meyers Foundation is acharitable organization dedicated tomaking a difference by generatingbroad-based support for children'sorganization, programs andschools." To learn more about thefoundation, visit the site atwww.joeymeyersfoundation.org

Mr. Meyers and approximately 10 0other individuals participated in agolf tournament on October 19,2009 at the Arroyo Trabuco GolfCourse generating nearly $15,000

and achieving the Foundation'sobjective "in support of childrenof the brace men and women thatserve in our military". Three baseschools are recipients of thisyears golf tournament fundraiser;demonstrati ng once again that ...In Joey's name, good th ings willhappen.

Tips for Parents During Times of StressExcerps Fo m Military Impacted Schools Association

Provide children with a normal, predictable routine. Children need the opportunity to ask questions and express

their feelings when they feel confused and uncertain. Give direct, simple answers. Be a good listener but don't dwell. Children will often respond the same way adults respond to a

situation-model calm, controlled behavior. Remember the value of laughter and fun Extensive television viewing is discouraged, especially for

    younger children.
