Is your school library a Māori Learning Environment?

Defining Māori Learning Environments

Ministry of Education documents set out the obligation of all schools to deliver teaching and learning programmes that support Māori learners.

These educational initiatives provide a framework for your school to develop and manage the library, and evaluate its effectiveness.

• Sets national targets to improve the performance of the education system for and with Mäori learners.

• Three underlying principles: – all Mäori learners have unlimited potential – all Mäori have cultural advantage by virtue of who they are - being Mäori is an asset; not a problem – all Mäori are inherently capable of achieving success.

The New Zealand Curriculum

• The school curriculum acknowledges the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and reflects New Zealand's unique bicultural and multicultural character

• All students are to have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of Te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, to strengthen Māori students'

identities whilst non-Māori journey towards shared cultural

understandings
