The 2017/18 season is already well underway
and, hopefully, after an initial period of
settling in, you and your team have found
your stride.
The summer break, and whatever form of rest or revaluation you chose
to fill it with, probably seems a distant memory now and the next one is
sadly many, many months away.
Take comfort, then, in the knowledge that a change really is as good as
a holiday when it comes to the brain, which means many of the benefits
of taking a break are within reach throughout the year. It turns out that
taking ‘cognitive breaks’, by stepping away from day-to-day tasks for
short periods or switching between low-focus and high-focus tasks,
can do wonders for your performance, improving everything from your
memory and decision making to focus and emotional skills. As Dr Dorian
Dugmore points out in his column on page 79, it’s interesting to note
that Roger Federer’s historic eighth win at Wimbledon 2017 came
off the back of an eight-week break.
Why wait until the summer to recharge? Building cognitive mini-breaks
into your routine throughout the year, and especially as the pressure
starts to ramp up, could make the difference between you burning out
and losing control and performing at your best, consistently and in
times of most need. Read our feature on page 60 to find out more.
Good luck with the season ahead and, as always, do get in touch
with your views and feedback.

The start of the 2017/18 season marks an important
milestone for me, as it’s now 10 years since my first
conversations with Howard Wilkinson and the LMA
board about taking on the role of CEO.
Leading the LMA and representing the individual and
collective interests of our members is a privilege. I’m
immensely proud of the work the LMA team delivers,
day in, day out, and their passion and commitment
is evident in everything they do.
10 years is a long time in football management, and
having that longevity has enabled us to build strong
relationships across the game. In turn, this has
allowed us to expand our horizons, constantly
improve the services that we offer our members
and make a positive contribution to the game.
As we look ahead into 2018, we will continue to focus
on enhancing and diversifying both our LMA Institute
of Leadership and High Performance and our LMA
Wellness offerings. We believe that investing in the
continued professional development and wellbeing
of the managers and coaches at the top level of
the game will benefit both the individuals themselves
and the game as a whole.
We will continue also to work with the game’s other
stakeholders on addressing important issues in
a proactive and constructive manner. Our focus
on diversity and discrimination in the game remains
a priority. We are also delighted to have welcomed,
over the summer, the managers of the Women’s
Super League as full members of the LMA.
At the recent Premier League managers pre-season
meeting, there was a discussion about how the
employment landscape and the role of the football
manager might change over the next five-to-ten
years. The LMA will be researching the future role
of the manager during this season and it will be my
responsibility to ensure that our organisation is
fit and ready to serve the ever-changing needs
of our members for the next 10 years and beyond.
My personal commitment to the LMA remains
undiminished. It is hugely rewarding to lead a
team delivering such important work to the game
and such important services to our members,
and I’m enthusiastic about the future for the LMA.

The siesta actually comes from Italy.
The Italian word ‘sexta’ refers to the
practice of stopping to eat and rest
at the sixth hour of the day.
Greater working hours don’t always
equal greater productively. In Spain,
presenteeism, whereby people remain
in the office to make a good impression,
is rife, while GDP is far lower than in
Germany, where working hours are
some of the lowest in Europe.
