change.” But I’m really pleased with how the lobby turned out. I think it’s definitely a more professional and updated setting, and it’s our space now. It’s not just leftovers from the last theatre that was here before us, it’s really a statement on who were are. Although I do miss that neon dearly.
What would you be doing if you weren’t working here?Wishing I was working here. It’s really hard to imagine what I’d being doing. I’ve made so many friends and had great experiences because of my job here. I didn’t know anybody when I moved to Salt Lake, and now I have this totally awesome family that I work with, so I don’t want to think about if I wasn’t here. I’d probably be in school or something boring like that.
What’s your fondest wish for SLFS going forward? To cross the narrow sea and take what is ours with fire and blood, preferably with dragons. Or you know, to continue growing as an organization and get the recognition as cultural institution that we really deserve. I see how many people apply to work here and people who would kill to work here, but then I talk to someone out in the world and they have no idea who we are, so I think my dream for SLFS is to have people know about us and love us as much as they love the megaplex.
Anything else you’d like to say?Hi mom!
How did you come to work at SLFS?Slipped a twenty to the bouncer. No, I had just moved to Salt Lake City and I heard through various channels that there was an opening, and I called, determined to set up an interview. I began to intern here, working three or four hours a day and then drive up to Park City to work six or seven hours at my other job. After about a month I was hired formally and started working more full time.
What is your job title and what do you do?I am the PR & Marketing Coordinator. I do various tasks around the department; making ads, sending out our weekly email, helping with our monthly calendar by writing our staff profiles and collecting data. I’m basically second-in-command in the department.
Can you tell about some parts of your job that you particularly like, or some special things you’ve enjoyed working on?I really love that a large portion of my job is researching films. I get paid to collect as much trivial knowledge about upcoming movies as I possibly can. I also really enjoy working on any of our events that we have, like dumping water on people’s heads at Rocky Horror or serving waffles at Wassail and Waffles. Any event where people come out to appreciate film is cool with me. But obviously the best part of my job is the people I work with. It’s honestly like a big family here and all the people I work with are wildly cool.
What’s the most preposterous thing you’ve been asked to do?I don’t know if I’ve ever really been asked to do anything preposterous, although spending the day at the zoo in 40 degree weather with vague animal noises being pumped through hidden speakers at random times wasn’t exactly the most fun thing I’ve ever done.
When did you begin to be interested in film?I think as long as I can remember I’ve been in love with film. I have a lot of significant memories of growing up watching movies, like when I was really little I was obsessed with the movie The Mummy. The 1999 version, not the universal movie monster. Seriously, I was obsessed with it. For Halloween I went as the main female villain, Anck-Su-Namun, for like three years in a row. And you know, I used to go home from seeing movies at the theater and play in the backyard, pretending that I was in that movie. I would always force my friends to watch movies with me that they had no interest in. Stuff like that.
What do you think it is that makes film such a special medium? It’s such a powerful tool for storytelling. Film can entertain you, can educate you, can inspire you to create something for yourself. But also, I love how different film can be. You can go from watching like There Will Be Blood, which as amazing film, to Big Trouble in Little China, which is also an AMAZING film, but they’re both so different from each other, like you would never connect those two movies in your head. There are so many genres and subgenres out there and it’s all awesome, it’s just cool to think about. You can really go out there and make any kind of story you want and someone will enjoy it.
Do you envision making your own film someday, or contributing in some way to the production of a film? I’m actually working on writing my first short film right now. Well, more like I know what it’s going to be about, but every time I open up Celtx, I decide that writing is awful and I’d rather saw my arm off than actually get that script done. And I’ve worked on television production before, while I was in college, but I’d love to be involved with making a film one day, I think it sounds really interesting.
It has to happen: What’s your favorite film and why?Whenever I ask someone this question, they always groan and say it’s a stupid question, but I actually immediately knew the answer. My favorite movie is Moulin Rouge, and has been since I was about nine years old. It was just the first film I saw that really moved me. Since my parents didn’t want me watching that film when I was super young, I would always sneak into a guest room and watch it while no one was home. It’s beautifully filmed, like honestly one of the most gorgeous films I’ve ever seen. It has this perfect balance of camp and serious drama that I think blends together really well. I’ve memorized every song in it and could probably recite the entire movie if you asked me to.
You’ve seen the old Broadway lobby and the new one. Compare and contrast.I mean it’s really apples and oranges. I mean when we first started renovation, I was sad because the Broadway really began to feel like a home to me, and you know, I’m basically Garth Algar, just standing in the corner muttering “we fear

SpruceFest!SLFS Hosts a Bash to Celebrate Broadway’s Beautiful New LobbyThe Broadway underwent a thorough spruce-up and has emerged from its chrysalis as a gorgeous new home for independent film. Tori Baker, SLFS Executive Director; Utah State Senator Jim Dabakis; Vicky Bourns, Zoo Arts and Parks Program Director; Bruce Bingham and Brian Horrocks, Hamilton Partners.
