Year 2 Home Learning – Sharing (Division)

Hello Year 2, Division is all about sharing things out into equal groups. We can start with a group of objects and share them out into smaller equal groups of objects. It’s important that everyone gets the same! We need to be fair! When we see this sign, ÷ we say “shared between” or “shared into” (instead of divided by) to help us remember what it means. We also have an action to go with it! It is always helpful to have objects in maths to help with counting. Just like last week, you could use dried beans, pasta, buttons, lego or pebbles to help you count. Or you could draw a picture. Activity 1 is practical. But don’t worry if you want to do it again with different numbers! If you would rather spend lots of time this week using plates and objects to share practically, that would be equally good! We do lots of practical sharing in year 2 before we write it down. You could also be in charge of making sure everyone gets a fair share of a packet of sweets or fruit and veg! This Curious George game is about making sure everyone gets the same amount. It’s handy to practise making equal groups. https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/dogs/ Don’t panic if you get stuck! There’s a mixture of activities here to choose from. There’s no pressure to complete everything. Sharing is tricky. I have made an alternative ‘number pack’ if you would rather get back to basics. Feel free to get in touch if you would like any support Miss Harker

Year 2 Home Learning – Sharing (division)

This is a practical activity using objects to share equally. You will need some plates and something to count out (eg. dried pasta or lego).

Equal means that everybody has the same. No-one is upset that they have more or less than somebody else! Unequal means that the groups are different. If Miss Harker has 5 sweets and you have 1 sweet, you might feel a bit cross!

Share your objects between people (or toys!). They will need a plate each. I have shared 8 between 2 people They will each have 4.

Use objects to share: 10 between 2 = ___ each 6 between 3 = ___ each 12 between 4 = ___ each 15 between 5 = ___ each 18 between 2 = ___ each

Superstar challenge! What happens if you share 11 between 2 = ___ each What do you notice? Can you find any other numbers that are difficult to share between 2?

Year 2 Home Learning – Sharing (division) 1. How many children are there? Draw them each a plate. 2. How many sweets are there to share out? Draw them, and count up on your

fingers as you say, “one for you, one for you, one for you…” You could do this with objects and make a fair and equal tea party for your favourite toys.

Year 2 Home Learning – Sharing (division) You can use a number line to divide. Start on the total number you have. Then jump back in steps. These questions are all about sharing into groups of 2. Jump 2 steps back at a time until you get to 0. Now count how many jumps you took.

Year 1 Home Learning – Sharing (division) You could use counters or objects and plates to work out the answers practically.

Draw on the pictures to help you work out the answers. For example, try drawing the worms for the blackbirds. Try saying, one for you, one for you, one for you, to make sure everyone gets the same.
