V lone malebnej prírody stredného Pohronia s bohatstvom blahodarných prameňov, tu na ľavom brehu rieky Hron žili dlhé roky usilovní rybári a na jej pravom bystrí hájnici. Boli súčasťou osád, ktoré slúžili Zvolenskému kráľovskému hradu. Tvorili základ obcí Rybáre a Hájniky, ktoré sa samostatne vyvíjali až do roku 1959, keď zlúčením s kúpeľmi vytvorili spoločnú obec Sliač. V roku 1969 bol Sliaču udelený štatút mesta. Jeho historickú identitu vyjadruje aj erb mesta s prameňom vody, rybami a lukom so šípom. Kúpeľné mesto Sliač oplýva mnohými jedinečnosťami. Aj preto mu už dávnejšie bol daný priliehavý názov „Perla Pohronia“.

In the east the town is surrounded by the Poľana mountain range, a former stratovolcano, (1458 m ASL) and by Kremnické vrchy (the Kremnica Mountains, the highest mountain Flochová 1316 ASL) in the west. Climate: Sliač’s climate is temperate with temperatures as low as – 25° C in winter and over + 30° C in summer. Relative humidity averages 78% and frequent mists and fogs appear mainly in autumn as the town lies in the basin surrounded by mountains. Na dnešnom území mesta Sliač bola nájdená kamenná sekera z roku 2400 pred n. l.

A stone hatchet, dating back to 2400 BC, was found in the territory of Sliač.

Prvá písomná zmienka pochádza z roku 1244 o Hájnikoch, jednej z dvoch pôvodných

usadlostí, a termálnych prameňoch. Druhá usadlosť sa nazýva Rybáre. Usadlosti

patrili Zvolenskému zámku a ich obyvatelia sa venovali lesníctvu a rybárstvu.

V tomto čase boli objavené aj prvé termálne pramene a ich liečebné účinky, ktoré

najprv využívali miestne ženy po namáhavej práci na poliach. Oblasť sa začala

nazývať Thermae Ribariensis.

The fi rst written mention of Hájniky, one of the two original settlements, and the

thermal water springs dates back to 1244. The other settlement was Rybáre. Both

settlements belonged to the Zvolen Castle. They provided fi shing and forestry

services for the nobility of the castle. The fi rst thermal springs were discovered by

local women who would use them after hard work in the local fi elds. The place

began to be called Thermae Ribariensis
