Highlights & Excitement to Come!

Below is a condensed version of my report for 2017, in case you missed it in the annual report. Thanks for a great year, and we look forward to a great one ahead!

It’s been another exciting year of ministry at Bread of Life! Some highlights include:

‘Share the Love’ Breakfast in February. It was a joy to watch generations connect, share stories, and share a meal.

Welcoming 32 new members in the spring. Awesome!

Watching the red on our thermometer in the narthex grow as we give generously to expand our building and our ministry!

Leading two adult classes focused on the Lutheran faith.

Walking with Tammy Hamm and Deidre Wall as they explore their calls to ministry.

Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation with 10 confirmation students (adults and youth!) as they affirmed their baptism on that significant day.

On a personal note - welcoming our son, Peter Charles, into our family!

Looking to the future… Pending a congregational vote on Sunday, March 4th - I look forward to the arrival of Mission Builders this spring! Through the build project, daily devotions and bible study – our ministry will be greatly enhanced by their presence.

THANK YOU for all YOU do to make our mission possible! Thanks to those who tidy up pews and scrub toilets, and to those who tend to the yard and property. To those who change the sign out front, serve funeral lunches, and bake goodies for weekly fellowship. Thanks to those who set up communion, teach and form the faith our children, and usher at a moment’s notice. To those who fold newsletters, visit shut-ins, and sing in the band. Thank you to those who phone a fellow member just to say hello, give generously to our ministry, and share the love of Christ in word and deed.

There will be many more opportunities to share your gifts in the year ahead!

God’s ministry among us is possible because of you! Lives are being changed, faith is being formed, and thousands (truly, around the world) are being served. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (12:27). Your care for God’s Kingdom ripples beyond your imagination!

In Christ, Pastor Taryn Montgomery

Building Update Thank you to all who attended the annual meeting, if you weren’t able to attend, here is a recap of the information provided at the meeting: Since our last update, Ackerman-Estvold Engineering has drawn up plans that will be 100% complete in the next couple of weeks. These plans have considered input from

the building committee and congregational input meetings, along with additional input from Mission Builders themselves. The plans meet the city requirements for building code, and zoning ordinances. Specifications to accommodate Mission Builders comments and requirements are also included in the plans. Anticipated advertising of bids lettings is expected the week of February 14th, with bids to be opened on March 7th. At this point, the bids will be tabulated and a recommendation will be presented for the congregation. Therefore, we have scheduled a special congregation meeting and vote on Sunday, March 18th at 10:00am.

Should the project proceed, Mission Builders would act as the project general contractor and partner with Bread of Life Lutheran Church during the course of construction.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with this project from the beginning - and especially to the congregation for your input, ideas, and feedback.

Kindly, Cody Roteliuk and Rusten Roteliuk, Building Committee co-chairs

A Sweet Deal for C.A.R. ~ (Central African Republic) which is an African

country, a little smaller than Texas in area and about the size of Alabama or Louisiana in population (4.4 million). Although it has significant natural resources, it is one of the poorest countries of the world. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic is a member of the Lutheran World Federation with an estimated 450 congregations, 50,000 members.

During Lent we will again be using M & M to raise funds to assist C.A.R. Enjoy the candy in the tube and then share your quarters to help those not as fortunate. Each tube holds $14. The funds will be used for projects such as building schools, churches, scholarships.

Gospel Seeds… February 2018 A Monthly Update from Western ND Synod Staff

Witnesses of the Gospel… As I write this (mid-January) a group of people from Western North Dakota leave for the Central African Republic. We hope to share word from these witnesses of the Gospel in coming months. Rev. Janis Sloka, Executive Director of Camp of the Cross has a long standing relationship with Campamento Luterano Eduardo Roig near Dorado, Puerto Rico. He along with seven oth-ers who have a connection to Camp of the Cross made the trek to help with hurricane recovery work. We thank God for their efforts and look forward to learning more from them. Meanwhile, Rev. Taryn Montgomery, Bread of Life, Minot is spending a little over a week visit-ing our companion church – the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic. Through her visit she will get a chance see the ministries partner with in CAR. We look forward to learning more from her upon her return. Plan to Attend… Unhealthy conflict in a congregation undermines the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ, that is a fact. One of the ways to avoid unhealthy conflict is to be clear about your con-gregation’s purpose, according to Rev. Dr. Peter Steinke. Steinke has spent his career working with congregation’s in conflict, writing about creating healthy congregations and teaching around these areas. We are glad to welcome Dr. Steinke to Western North Dakota for an afternoon workshop at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck on Sunday, February 11th from 2:00pm until 5:00pm. The cost is $10 per person. This is an incredible opportunity to learn from an excellent teacher – we hope to see you there. Synod Council to Meet… Your synod council meets February 9th and 10th at Christ Lutheran in Minot. If there are is-sues you want discussed please let me know. Also, a reminder – the deadline for submitting resolutions for this year’s synod assembly is March 31st. Contact Faith Simonieg if you have questions about the process of bringing forward resolutions. Staffing Reorganization… Some changes are in the works for the structure of synod staff. A decision has been made to outsource much of the bookkeeping work for the synod. This move is being made to reduce staffing costs within the synod but will result in loss of long time employee Monroe Madson. Monroe has faithfully served as the synod’s Financial Administrator – always doing his best to oversee the gifts shared with the synod from individuals and congregations. He will continue to work in the office through mid-February. I am thankful for his servant’s heart. This means that duties will shift within the office and that we will be bringing on a new part-time position. As with any change there will be a learning curve and we ask that you be patient with us as we engage this new staffing pattern. At the same time staff is looking closely at the synod’s budget to make sure that we are best positioned to continue to provide for face to face contact with congregations. While Mission Support has been consistent it has not kept pace with inflation and rising costs. What am I reading… From time to time I am asked what I am reading. Here is what I am spending time with now: -Original Blessing: Putting Sin in its Rightful Place by Danielle Shroyer. In this Fortress Press book, Shroyer argues that the concept of original sin was an add on to the Christian faith sever-al hundreds years after the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Instead she argues that scrip-ture instead speaks of original blessing, being beloved one of God. -The Agile Church: Spirit Lead Innovation in an Uncertain Age by Dwight Zscheile. Written by a Luther Seminary Professor, this book does an excellent joy of describing the sociological changes impacting the church today. Blessings all!
