Defining and Converting U.S. System Units of Capacity

Units of capacity are generally used to measure liquids.

U.S. Units of Capacity

8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 1 cup (c)

2 cups = 1 pint (pt)

2 pints = 1 quart (qt)

4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal)

Defining and Converting Metric System Units of Capacity

Metric Units of Capacity

1 kiloliter (kl) = 1000 liters (L)

1 hectoliter (hl) = 100 L

1 dekaliter (dal) = 10 L

1 liter (L) = 1L

1 deciliter (dl) = 1/10 or 0.1 L

1 centiliter (cl) = 1/100 L or 0.01 L

1 milliliter (ml) = 1/1000 or 0.001 L

Example

Convert 4510 ml to liters.

List the unit measurers in order from left to right and move from milliliters to liters.

kl hl dal L dl cl ml

Move the decimal point three units to the left.

4510 ml = 4.510 L

3 units to the left

Example

Convert 0.195 dl to milliliters.

List the unit measurers in order from left to right and move from milliliters to liters.

kl hl dal L dl cl ml

Move the decimal point two units to the right.

0.195 dl = 19.5 ml

2 units to the right
