SPRING 2020

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our security partner, Cordant Security, and in particular the individual members of the Slough Trading Estate Business Watch team for keeping this vital service operational at this testing time.

Should you have any concerns or wish to draw any issue to the attention of the Business Watch team the Operations Centre can be contacted 24 hours a day on 01753 511678.

SPECIAL EDITION 2020 SLOUGH TRADING ESTATE NEWSLETTER

SLOUGH TRADING ESTATE’S RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

SEGRO, the owner of Slough Trading Estate, is carefully monitoring the situation regarding the Coronavirus pandemic. We are focusing on the health, safety and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues, and are working hard to support our stakeholders during this uncertain period.

The SEGRO team remains fully operational. And although our teams on the ground may be less visible in person, we are working remotely and are always on the end of a telephone, email or video call if you need us.

We appreciate that this is a challenging period for many of our customers, colleagues and other business partners, and we are committed to working with all of you to minimise the damage caused by the pandemic and to support you maintaining ‘business as usual’ so far as possible.

We appreciate that security is a heightened concern for many businesses at the current time. Therefore we are pleased that the Business Watch Operations Centre remains fully operational and offering its usual high level of service.

The Business Watch team continues to monitor over 100 CCTV cameras that cover all the roads and common areas on the estate, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

cameras are still in operation covering every entrance to the estate and the team continues to work closely with our partners at Thames Valley Police.

So please rest assured that even if you’re not around as often as normal, the Business Watch team continues to work hard to maintain the safe and secure working environment we all value as part of the Slough Trading Estate community.

A message FROM OUR EDITOR

CHANGE IN THE THAMES VALLEY

James Craddock, Business Unit Director, SEGRO

We are pleased to announce the appointment of James Craddock as our new Business Unit Director for Thames Valley.

James will have overall responsibility for the next phase of evolution and growth of the Thames Valley business unit, which includes the Slough Trading Estate. He will also oversee the growth of the data centre customer base across the group.

James joined SEGRO as Development Director in 2015 before being promoted to Regional Director for Park Royal & London in 2016, a role in which he had overall responsibility for the management of a £2bn portfolio of assets.

When we first started planning the next edition of estatelife, it was intended that we would be delving into the archives to celebrate 100 years of the Slough Trading Estate and the extraordinary contributions and achievements of hundreds of companies, and many thousands of people from the Slough community that have contributed to the story of the Slough Trading Estate over the years.

However, the Coronavirus pandemic which is currently impacting us all means that we need to look at life through a very different lens which is why we’re issuing this special edition of estatelife

It’s worth noting that history acts as a reminder that many generations before us have also had to deal with tough times. But the remarkable thing about the Slough community is that we deal with the situation, we learn, we dust

ourselves down and we continue to strive for a better future.

The Slough Trading Estate archives are full of amazing stories from the last century which illustrate this strength, and which show how by working together and demonstrating a strong sense of community, the people and businesses of Slough have prospered in the long term.

And fast forward to now, rarely has it been so important that the idea generators, innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs among us come to the fore. We’re blessed that Slough Trading Estate has plenty of them. We all now need to play our part to fight the pandemic and once we come through the other side we will be looking to these people to help get successful businesses up and running again, help get people back into their jobs and help build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable long-term future.

James Craddock said:

“The Slough Trading Estate has been home to some amazing companies and the workplace for tens of thousands of diverse and talented people for a hundred years. Clearly these are unprecedented times, but the Slough Trading Estate and its customers have proven throughout history to show resilience. There are still challenges ahead, but I am optimistic that not only will we get through this turbulent period, but standing side-by-side we can look ahead to a long-term sustainable future. I look forward to working with Paul and the team to provide our customers with best in class service which will help achieve this.”

SPECIAL EDITION 2020

Paul Lewis, Regional Director, SEGRO

So firstly, thank you for your contributions in helping ride this storm. Secondly, I hope this special edition of estatelife will provide you with some reassurance that we are committed, as far as possible, to ensuring that Slough Trading Estate plays a short- and long-term role in dealing with this crisis and coming through the other side.

https://slough.foodbank.org.uk/give-help-2/foodbank-wishlist/ so we can continue this vital service.”

Slough Council for Voluntary Services has been supporting the people in Slough since the 1930s and in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead since 2014. It is seeking volunteers to help provide support to vulnerable people in the community as a result of Coronavirus.

Ramesh Kukar, Chief Executive of Slough Council for Voluntary Service, said:

“I would encourage those who are able and willing to volunteer to register on the One Slough Community Response page or on the NHS website so we can organise valuable resources in the most efficient way.

It is through this army of volunteers that we will be able to ensure that the older and more vulnerable members of our society are able to receive the food and medication they need, or a regular call to check on their wellbeing.

“Residents can also request support on the One Slough Community Response page for themselves or a neighbour, friend or relative. It is vital that people register their needs with us to ensure they get the support required.”

STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY AT A TIME OF NEED

SPECIAL EDITION 2020

churches to provide food parcels to those in need whilst at the same time keeping everyone safe.

In anticipation of the increased demand for these vital services during this difficult period, we have offered the use of some additional vacant space on Slough Trading Estate if and when the charity needs it.

In addition to the higher demand for its services, Slough Foodbank faces additional challenges with donations of essential products and is seeking extra help from the Slough community.

Sue Sibany-King, Manager at Slough Foodbank explained:

“The reduced availability of products in supermarkets and the halt of church services have had a huge impact on the stock levels available for us to distribute to the people that rely on them.

“With limited resources and increased demand we are focusing only on the core foods, toiletries and basic items that people need the most, and this is where we need help from the people of Slough. A full list of the essential products is available on our website and we ask that people only donate these products.

“We thank people in advance for their generosity and for donations of any of the core items on our website wishlist

It is often the case that community spirit is at its strongest in times of crisis. There have been many examples of this over the last 100 years – from the depression of the 1930s and the Second World War to the great inflation of the 1970s and the 2008 financial crash – where Slough and the Trading Estate have proven that they have the resilience, adaptiveness and, perhaps most importantly, the people to come through the other side.

It is warming to see reports in the archives about, for example, lorries being loaned from Slough Trading Estate to support recovery efforts from one of the UK’s most devastating floods of the 20th Century in Louth, Lincolnshire, or how Welsh miners made redundant in the 1930s depression were relocated, re-trained and re-employed on Slough Trading Estate.

So as communities up and down the country face up to one of the most challenging periods in recent history, it is reassuring to know that there are already many people, businesses and other organisations coming together and responding to help those in our society who are most vulnerable.

Two such organisations are Slough Foodbank and Slough Council for Voluntary Services.

Slough Foodbank partners with 155 referral agencies, including the Job Centre, Slough Borough Council, health visitors, children’s services, children’s centres, schools and some
