Continually increasing costs of wastewater treatment have become a major economic concern. Large Filter Presses Avery Filter Co. Westwood, N.J.
Avery Filter has announced expansion of its product line to include units designed for 1500 mm filter plates. The 1500 mm by 150 mm unit will provide up to 4000 ft2 of filter area and more than 250 ft3 of cake capacity. These large Avery filter presses are available with conventional recessed-chamber filter plates and with the newer W S variable volume concept often called dia- phragm or membrane-filter plates. MembraneDia- phragm technology is said to produce filter cakes with up to 75% solids content in one half the cycle time of conventional filter presses. Chamber plates are con- structed of heat- and chemically-stabilized polypro- pylene. The new 1500 mm units are available in either conventional sidebar construction or as dual overhead sidebar, fabricated steel designs, which simplify plate handling. Double-acting hydraulic cylinders open and close these automated Avery filter presses, which operate at pressures up to 225 psi. A fully mechanized plate shifter discharges the filter cake into various means of cake-handling systems including conveyors.

Netzsch high pressure (up to 225 psig) filter presses are a highly efficient method of dewatering metal hydroxide sludge, producing solid concentrations up to 85% and solid capture rates up to 99.95%. With cake capacities ranging from 0.5 to 600 ft3/cycle, Netzsch presses are available with a variety of plate designs including membrane, recessed chamber and plate, and frame. Plate sizes range from 470 mm x 470 mm to 2 m x 2 m. Auxiliary systems include sludge feed, squeeze, precoating, acid wash, chemical conditioning, cloth washing, and electrical controls. Fully automatic presses can be supplied.

A hydraulically-operated, fully-automatic plate-shift- ing mechanism, pneumatically-controlled drip tray, and air blow-down manifold are among the many automation features offered with the new Hoesch 100-psi and 225-psi sidebar filter-press systems. Automatic plate shifting minimizes the need for operator presence during the cake discharge cycle by automating plate separation and cake dump. Additionally, the plate shifting mechanism can be retrofitted to a wide range of sidebar filter presses. Hoeschs sidebar presses range in size from 1500 mm down to 250 mm. The Type 690A continuous sludge dryer dehydrates sludges produced by filter presses, centrifuges, pressure- leaf filters, vacuum filters, and secondary clarifiers. It uses an indirect heat transfer system designed to continuously process and reduce wet sludge cake to a granular form. The sludge cake is channeled from a holding hopper to a processor where it is homogenized and then extruded onto an endless stainless steel conveyor belt. As the belt and sludge move through the heat transfer chamber, water vapor is drawn off by an exhaust blower, and the heated supply air recirculated throughout the system. A muffle chamber shields the sludge from direct contact with the heated air. Belt speed is variable to permit a choice of sludge dryness.

Water Evaporator/Sludge Dehydrator Fenton Environmental Technologies Coleman, Texas
Fen-Tech is pleased to introduce a unique, combination water evaporator/sludge dehydration system, which is designed to efficiently evaporate process water and dehydrate residue that settles to the bottom of the evaporation tank. The evaporator utilizes submerged serpentine tubes, which are heated by a gas-fired burner. The water is injected into the system through a stainless steel water preheat tube, which is routed through the heated water, coiled through exhaust gases of the burner beneath the preheat plate and then, released across the top of the preheat plate before being introduced into the main reservoir. During the evaporation process, residue will gradually build up in the sloped-bottom evaporator tank. When this requires discharging, simply drain into the optional electric-heated dehydrator located beneath the evaporator. When the water has been evaporated and the solids dried, empty the dry powder into a receptacle for disposal or reclamation. Units are available with all wetted components constructed from coated mild steel or several different stainless alloys.

Serfilco offers an easy-to-install Disposable Fabric Filtration system, which features continuous, uninter- rupted flow for filtration of treated plating waste and effluent from fume scrubbers, parts washers, process or cooling water, industrial wastewater, etc., at low cost. Additional applications include water wall spray booths, phosphating solutions and machine tool coolants. The gravity filtration system is assembled of corrosion- resistant parts suitable for the application. Carbon steel, stainless steel, and plastic construction are available. A float switch energizes an electric or air motor, which drives the conveyor to advance spent media, and introduces fresh media to the influent stream. Separated solids are collected along with the spent media for disposal in a landfill or by incineration.

DSC Environmental Co. and the Intervac Corp. have joined forces to develop a new Solvent Extractor system, which removes the hazardous solvents from all forms of paint. This 100% closed-loop system is capable of processing up to 55 gal of liquid, sludge, or solid at a time and conveniently fits on a floor space of only 2 x 10 ft. With a push of the start button, the system will complete the processing cycle in approximately 4 hr. By then, the solvents have been recovered and collected into a 5-gal tank and the remaining waste is now safe for regular landfill disposal. This new Solvent Extractor system can save on disposal costs up to four to six hundred dollars per barrel while the recovered solvent can be recycled.

Mars Tech Centrix systems are designed to apply one fully automatic centrifuge to continuously remove paint sludge from multiple paint booths in a time-shared mode. The systems are ideal in a multiple paint booth operation when paint overspray in individual booths is low enough that a full automatic centrifuge is not economical. All Centrix systems include one fully-automatic centrifuge, main control panel, automatic valves, pumping system, and booth sequencer control. The systems are customized to include automatic feeding of the paint detackifying chemicals in the booth water along with booth agitation systems, including pumping, eductors, sweep nozzles, pusher nozzles, foam suppress nozzles, automatic valves, and level switches. The units are prefabricated on a compact skid before shipment from the factory for easy installation on site.
