Basic knowledge of slug retention

If slugs are pulled up after the stamping process it could damage the sheetmetal strip, the fi nal part or even the die. The slug control is a small angled groove in the sidewall of a stamping-die cavity which prevents the slugs from pulling onto the die surface. There is no effect on the size and geometry of the hole. Depending on the hole diameter more than one groove could be necessary.The groove creates a precise amount of interferences. During the stamping operation, slugs expand into these grooves, which - by jamming the slug in the matrice - prevents them from pulling back up to the top of the die block and onto the die surface. When the punch is withdrawn, the slug remains there for a while and is finally forced through by the following slug. The slug stops can be prefabricated ex works or created later on by the slug retention machine SlugKeeper™.

SlugKeeper™ – Field of application

The SlugKeeper™ is most often used for die blocks. Since these matrices are particuarly manufactured according to the hole pattern, the slug control has to be mounted afterwards. Thanks to its small size SlugKeeper™ can be applied before or after the die matrice is assembled in the die tool. Moreover it is possible to use the unit directly in the press. Given that the die block does not have to be disassembled and removed from the press, machine downtime and costs are reduced.Furthermore, single matrices may be retrofi tted by the slug retention device.

SlugKeeper™ – How it works

• A small angled groove is precisely ground into the interior wall of the die matrice

• The machine uses a pneumatically powered and manually controlled grinder, maximum air pressure 6,3 bar (90 psi)

• A micrometer screw coupled to the drive of the machine’s slide enables precise movement of the machine’s carriage to control the depth of the slug-retention groove

• A magnetic base keeps SlugKeeper™ fi rmly on the die surface during operation

SlugKeeper™ needs the following adaptions
