General description
The casing tong carriage assembly is a steel frame carriage thatsupports the Eckel 14 in. Hydra-Shift hydraulic power tong. Twocarriage legs are mounted on the bottom of the casing tongcarriage assembly. They attach the assembly to the frame.
Before mounting the casing tong carriage assembly on theAR3200 carriage, the SSW-50 spinning wrench assembly must beremoved (refer to Chapter 3, Operation, of this manual). After theSSW-50 is removed, install the casing tong carriage assembly onthe AR3200 carriage by stabbing the casing tong carriageassembly legs into the SSW-50 support tubes.
Also part of the casing tong carriage assembly are the threehydraulically operated guide rollers used to align the casing withthe well. These rollers are equidistant around the circumference ofthe casing when activated.
The casing tong carriage assembly contains hydraulic quickdisconnect fittings located on a bulkhead plate on the back of theguide rollers carriage assembly. The carriage assembly alsocontains connections for the tong hydraulics: motor, breakout pinand makeup pin (Drawing 116793).
Thread Compensation SystemA pneumatic thread compensator system allows the tong carriageto move when making up casing (threading in) or when breakingout casing (threading out).
The pneumatic thread compensator system consists of twopneumatic cylinders mounted on the AR3200 carriage supporttubes. The pneumatic cylinders have a 4 in. stroke, with the rodsoriented vertically.
A regulator/filter assembly connects the cylinders to the rig airsupply via the inlet manifold. The cylinder rods push against thecarriage structure. Turning the regulator clockwise increases theair pressure required to lift the tong assembly.
The cylinders begin to lift the tong assembly when pressurereaches approximately 75 psig. The cylinders allow the tongassembly to lower when pressure decreases to 50 psig.

Tong/carriage assembly hydraulicsystemThe tong/carriage assembly hydraulic system includes thefollowing components:
❏ Tong motor❏ Breakout/makeup pin cylinders❏ Flow divider for guide roller cylinder❏ Guide roller cylinders
The following paragraphs describe the tong/carriage assemblyhydraulic system.
Figure 1 shows the location of the hydraulic components. Figure2 (on the next page) is a hydraulic schematic for the system.
Tong motorWith hydraulic power supplied from an external hydraulic powersupply, the 2-speed tong motor can provide torque of up to22,000 ft lb. The motor turns in one direction for makeupoperation and the other direction for breakout operation. Themotor operates at two speeds: full and half. Half speed providestwice the torque of that for full speed.
Breakout pin cylinderThe breakout pin and makeup pin operate in an exclusive-ormanner. This means one pin or the other must be engaged.During operation, both cylinders retract automatically to clearrotating parts.
Makeup pin cylinderThe makeup pin cylinder extends, inserting the backing pin inthe makeup pin hole to set up a makeup operation. The cylinderthen retracts and the pin remains in position in the hole. Thenthe tong is rotated for a makeup operation. See the breakout pincylinder description above.
Flow dividerThe flow divider splits hydraulic flow into two equal quantitieswhich are applied to the two swing guide roller cylinders. Thisallows both cylinders to clamp at the same speed.

Complete the following preoperational checklist (Table 1) beforeoperating the casing tong carriage assembly.
Table 1. Casing tong carriage assembly preoperational checklist
No. Inspection
1 Inspect the tong/carriage assembly for loose hardware andfittings.
2 Check the tong/carriage assembly hoses for abrasion, pinching, cracking, kinking, and excessive bending or twisting.
3 Check all hydraulic hose connections to the tong/carriageassembly hydraulic cylinders for tightness. Tighten as required.
4 Inspect the guide rollers for damage and freedom of movement.Repair or replace as required.
5 Check the thread compensation system. Verify that the cylindersraise and lower the tong carriage. The total travel is approximately3 1/2 in.
e The self-sealing hydraulic line quick disconnects (QDs) must be fullyshouldered when fastened together. If not, the self-sealing valves (checkvalves) do not open, or only partially open. This causes severe pressuredrops through the QD. The drop in pressure causes the hydraulic fluidto over heat and overload the hydraulic power supply (HPU)

Hydraulic cylinder operation
The tong/carriage assembly contains the hydraulic cylindersrequired to perform all mechanized handling of casing by thetong/casing assembly.
Guide roller cylindersThe guide roller cylinders are energized during the handling ofcasings to capture, clamp, and guide the casing. Two guide rollercylinders, when extended, cause two rollers to swing in andaround the casing while the third guide roller cylinder (centerroller cylinder) provides pressure against the casing.
Breakout pin cylinderThe breakout pin cylinder is extended when a breakout operationis to be performed. The cylinder causes the backing pin to beinserted in the breakout hole in the casing tong.
Makeup pin cylinderThe makeup pin cylinder is extended when a makeup operation isto be performed. The cylinder causes the backing pin to beinserted in the makeup hole in the casing tong.
