What is an “entrepreneur”?

“A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.”

What is a “small business”?

“SBA has established numerical definitions of small businesses, or ‘size standards,’ for all for‐profit industries. Size standards represent the largest size that a business (including its subsidiaries and affiliates) may be to remain classified as a small business concern.”

What SBDCs See: Startup Gotchas

• Financing on credit cards• Biz degree ≠ knowing how

to run a business• Patent ≠ money• Starting too complex; KISS• Passion is important, as

investment often is in the person/team

• Not being agile – need to practice lean (fail early)

• Typical causes of failure:– Cash flow– Undercapitalized

• Lack of working capital• Capex issues

– Skills gaps– Divorce; bad partnership– No market– Competitors

Some of the best stuff we do is just helping people understand what types of financing options are available,

how they will look to a lender, and how to get help from the SBDC or other sources to be better positioned for success.
