ABSTRACT

This updated list of 410 books and 136 journalsis intended as a selection aid for the small libraryof a hospital, medical society, clinic, or similarorganization. Books and journals are arranged bysubject, with the books followed by an author in-dex, and the journals by an alphabetical title listing.Items suggested for first purchase by smaller li-braries are noted by an asterisk. To purchase the entire collection of books and

to pay for the annual subscription costs of all thejournals would require an expenditure of about$12,000. To acquire only those items suggested forfirst purchase, approximately $3,250 would beneeded.

THE NATIONAL Library of Medicine Re-gional Medical Library Program Policy State-ment (1) indicates that the "Basic Unit" includesthe community hospitals and that they have afundamental continuing education obligation.Furthermore, the Basic Unit is to be consideredas an essentially independent, free-standing edu-cational organization. If this is to be the case, itis mandatory that these units be required tohave a basic library collection which will servethe immediate needs of their primary clientele.

Perhaps the Stearns-Ratcliff "core library"(2) was originally intended to serve this purpose. However, many believe that this is too minimala collection to serve any but the smallest hos-pitals. Therefore, the present list, which is re-vised biennially, is intended to supplement the"core list." substantive library to meet its needs and objec-tives.

If a hospital wished to purchase all of thebooks and journals in the Brandon List today, approximately $8,690 would be required forthe books, and $3,250 for the annual journalsubscriptions. If only the items marked withan asterisk were to be ordered, the approximateamounts would be: Books - $2,150, JournalSubscriptions - $1,100. The present list has beencompletely revised and updated, and it in-corporates suggestions made by both subjectspecialists and medical librarians.

It will be impossible for the very small hos-pital library to procure all, or even most, of thelisted books and journals. Therefore, items sug-gested for first purchase are noted by an aster-isk.

There are few up-to-date selection aids availa-ble today. Earlier lists are mentioned in thefourth revised version of this paper. Those thatare still useful are noted in the list of references(3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). A new edition of the excellentBasic List of Guides and Information Sourcesfor Professional and Patients' Libraries in Hos-pitals has recently been published by the JointCommittee on Library Service in Hospitals (9).It is a great help to librarians in both small andlarge hospitals and is free of charge. The new book entitled Library Practice in

chapters on selection and acquisition of booksand journals are particularly important to studyin relation to the use of this list.Anyone wanting a more comprehensive listing

of standard books and journals in the basic andmedical sciences may use the syllabus preparedby Myrl Ebert for her course in Medical Li-brarianship given in the School of Library Sci-ence, University of North Carolina at ChapelHill (3).The present list is intended as a selection aid

for the small library of a hospital, society, clinic,or similar organization. It should be consideredin relation to the purposes of the particular in-stitution and the subject specialties dominanttherein. Emphasis has been placed on selectingthe most recent and authoritative works in theEnglish language in each subject area. The listis by no means complete and should be supple-mented by additional books and journals in thespecialties of greatest interest to the clienteleof the library. Very few expensive sets are noted, and inexpensive alternatives are included withinthe same category. No attempt has been made tolist innumerable reference works, since the bestselection of such tools is available in the "Se-lected Reference Aids for Small Medical Li-braries" revised by Howertine Farrell Duncan,Reference Librarian, National Library of Medi-cine, and published in the April 1970 issue ofthe Bulletin of the Medical Library Association(1 1).The listing of books in nursing has been ex-

tensively revised with the help of Mrs. JeanFrohlich, Librarian, Sinai Hospital, Baltimore,Maryland. It may still be supplemented by threeexcellent lists. The "Reference Sources for Nurs-ing," published in the May 1972 issue of Nurs-ing Outlook, was initiated by the InteragencyCouncil on Library Resources for Nursing (12).The most complete and helpful list of materialsfor the nursing school library is the work com-piled by Sister Mary Concordia in 1967 (13).

However, it is quite out of date and needs re-vision. Stearns, Ratcliff, and others published a

"core nursing library" list in 1970 (14).Although it is possible to order books directly

from the publishers, it is usually more satisfac-tory to choose a reliable medical book dealerin one's city or region, who can obtain any ofthe volumes desired, and who usually offers a 10percent discount with postage paid on booksfrom major medical publishers in the UnitedStates. Typical of such agents are the following:Brown & Connolly, Inc., 1399 Boylston Street,Boston, Massachusetts 02115; Burns & Mac-Eachern Limited, 62 Railside Road, Don Mills,Ontario, Canada; Login Bros. Book Company,Inc., 1450 West Randolph Street, Chicago,Illinois 60607; Eliot Books, Inc., 35-53 24thStreet, Long Island City, New York 11106;Majors Scientific Books, Inc., 3770 Zip Indus-trial Boulevard, Atlanta, Georgia 30354; MajorsScientific Books, Inc., 147 South Liberty Street,New Orleans, Louisiana 70112; Majors Scien-tific Books, Inc., 8911 Directors Row, Dallas,Texas 75247; Majors Scientific Books, Inc.,6632 South Main Street, Houston, Texas 77025;Mathews Medical Books, 3140 Park Avenue,St. Louis, Missouri 63104; Rittenhouse BookStore, 1706 Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia,Pennsylvania 19103; and J. W. Stacey, Inc.,15255 East Don Julian Road, City of Industry,California 91749.

Similarly, journals can be ordered through anagent, thus saving time in correspondence, pur-chase orders, and processing multiple invoices.Today, most journal agents are charging aservice fee ranging from 3 to 10 percent. Beforeplacing subscriptions with any agent, the li-brarian should ascertain the amount of suchservice charges. It is advisable to consult withother medical or university librarians in one'sarea prior to choosing a subscription agent.Typical of these agents are the following: F. W.Faxon Company, Inc., 515-525 Hyde Park

this list was originally published. Many neweditions of standard works have appeared. Ininstances where more recent books have beenpublished, they have supplanted out-of-print orolder works in the same field if they are just asauthoritative. If a work has more than twoauthors or editors, the phrase [and others] isused after the name of the senior author oreditor.
