Enjoying the Comfort of Energy Savings

Energy costs take a big chunk of your household budget. Yet, making energy-efficient choices in products and services can help your household become more “green-friendly” while also keeping even more of your hard-earned “green” for yourself.

Remember that all of the appliances in your home come with two costs – the purchase price, as well as the operating cost. Upgrading to more energy-efficient products provides the improvement any new equipment offers while also reducing monthly energy use. This is true for washers and dryers, refrigerators and freezers, lighting products, electronics and especially your home’s heating and cooling system.

Given that half of your energy dollars go to heating and cooling, replacing outdated and inefficient home comfort equipment can make a sizeable difference in your energy

conservation. You can make other simple changes as well, starting with lowering your temperature in winter. Experts say that for every degree that you lower your temperature within the 60 to 70-degree range, you can save up to 5 percent in

home heating costs.

Installing a programmable thermostat will help you maintain comfortable temperatures when your home is in use. Or a smart thermostat connected to Wi-Fi will allow you to change the

setting anywhere you go with the aid of a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Just as important, regular tune-ups for each heating and cooling season help preserve the life of your home comfort equipment, as well as improve its energy efficiency.

For more ideas, tips and tricks to stay comfortable while using less energy in your heating and cooling, please give us a call.

Hello Friends,

Hope your wintertime

is going well. This season has the distinction of having the “shortest days” of the year, but you wouldn’t know that by how busy life can get.

Though you may be keeping up your usual pace, at least for nature, winter is a time for resting – trees and landscape are dormant; hibernating creatures are taking a long nap. In the middle of your active day, I hope you’ll

Tricks for Removing Candle Wax

Lit candles add flattering lighting and sweet scents to winter evenings, but an unfortunate wax spill is almost

guaranteed at some point during the season:

To remove clumps of dried wax on hard surfaces like tabletops or wood floors, use a hair dryer to reheat the wax. Then wipe it away with a paper towel or disposable rag. Use a spray cleaner to remove residue.

Repair, Replace or Ignore? So, you hear an odd noise coming from your heating system, and something sounds wrong. Or you hear an odd silence, and nothing’s happening. Perhaps you feel the wrong kind of air flowing into your rooms – say, cold air when you’re needing warm.

You know you’ve got a problem. What will you do? Start by checking what you can on your own – obviously the settings on your thermostat, plus the dirt in your filter, for example. Then give us a call.

You don’t want to ignore a problem with your heater or furnace. These systems are significant investments for homeowners, and tending to a problem sooner rather than later can help you preserve your

system’s longevity, performance and energy efficiency. More importantly, operating malfunctions could cause carbon monoxide to be produced and enter into your living space, and that’s a risk you simply cannot afford to ignore.

After a professional technician checks out the problem, if a repair is covered by your warranty or otherwise is a reasonable cost, you’ll be wise to give the go-ahead and get it done.

However, there may be times when you should consider replacing your heating and cooling system. That decision will involve a number of factors, including system age, repair frequency, increasing energy bills and comfort inconsistency.

Whatever the problem may be, call us, and we’ll certainly help you make the decision that’s best for not only your family’s comfort, but their safety as well.

When you cook, pay attention. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires, and unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. For your safety, please follow these simple guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association:

For softer surfaces like carpet or upholstery, simply place a paper towel over the dried wax, then a cloth towel over the paper towel. Use a hot iron to run over the cloth towel and let the paper towel absorb the wax.

• Stay in the kitchen if you’re frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food. If you leave even for a moment, turn off the stove. For other kinds of cooking – baking, roasting, simmering – you can step out of the kitchen, but don’t leave the house. Check food regularly, and use a timer to remind you that you’ve got something delicious cooking.

• Also, be sure to keep anything flammable away from your stovetop, including oven mitts, wooden utensils, kitchen towels and food packaging. Always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, and know how to use it.

• If the fire is in the oven, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed. To contain a small grease fire, keep a lid nearby, place the lid over the pan and turn off the heat.

• If you do have a fire, be smart in your response. For your safety, leave the house and call 9-1-1.

Partying with Popcorn

Whether you’re having folks over for a fun evening or staying in for movie night, popcorn is a go-to snack centerpiece.

But why stop with plain old buttered varieties? Popcorn is a blank canvas for your taste buds and can handle sweet or savory additions. Why not try both by adding fruit and nuts to create a delicious trail mix?

Start with a regular bag of microwave popcorn, popped. In a large bowl, combine popcorn (unpopped kernels removed) with 2 cups low-fat granola, 1 cup quick-cooking oats, 1 cup dried cranberries, and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. Set aside.

In a small bowl, combine ½ cup sunflower kernels, ½ cup honey and ½ cup of butter or margarine, melted. Pour over popcorn mixture and stir with a spoon coated in non-stick cooking spray. Spread the mixture on a cookie sheet or shallow baking pan and bake at 300 degrees for about a half hour. Stir half-way during cooking time. Cool for 20 minutes, then break into clumps.

Massage therapy is not just an indulgence for a day at the luxury spa. It’s also recognized as an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension.

There are many different styles of massage therapy, and they involve a variety of techniques for pressing, rubbing, and manipulating muscles and other soft tissues. The styles range from light stroking to deep pressure, and the benefits can extend beyond simple relaxation.

Massage has been used to reduce back

pain, headaches, anxiety and depression. It has helped increase

joint flexibility, strengthen weak or atrophied muscles and relax injured or overused muscles. If you’d like to give massage therapy a try, check with your doctor; it’s not meant to replace regular medical care.

Fast FixFast Fix

Need a Good Night’s Sleep? If you’re having trouble falling asleep, check your thermostat. Insomniacs may have warmer core body temperatures and could benefit from a cooler room. But don’t go to extremes. Experts say the optimal temperature range for falling asleep is between 60 and 68 degrees. Temperatures beyond this range could lead to restlessness.

Window Cleaning Directions In case it’s just not as clear as it should be (sorry!): When cleaning the glass in your windows, spray a mist of your cleaner on the inside then wipe horizontally with a clean lint-free cloth. For outer panes, change direction – spraying cleaner then wiping vertically until dry. You’ll be able to see streaks better, and you’ll know which side they’re on.

It’s a simple idea that can pay you back many times over. When it comes to regular maintenance of your heating and cooling system, you won’t find a better deal than our Comfort Club.
