SmartGrids Definition

“Electricity networks that can intelligently integrate the behavior and actions of all users connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both – in order to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity supplies.”

EU Technology Platform for the Electricity of the Future

• A smart grid employs innovative products and services together with intelligent monitoring, control and communication technologies in order to:

– Better facilitate the connection and operation of generators of all sizes and technologies;

– Allow consumers to play a part in optimizing the operation of the system;

– Provide consumers with greater information and options for choice of supply;

– Significantly reduce the environmental impact of the whole electricity supply system;

– Maintain or even improve the existing high levels of system reliability, quality and security of supply;

Why Smart Grids?

4 Intelligent Energy Systems 20.03.2012

• SmartGrids are a critical technology for efficient transformation of the energy system and solving of the climate challenges

• National and international priority

– EU SET-plan: “Intelligent electricity networks” is 1 of 7 crucial technology challenges

– DK: Smart Grids is crucial for operating an energy system wo. fossile fuels.

– DK: Part of govornment strategy

• Massive global investments and R&D-needs

– OECD: Need for doubling of energy infrastructure-investments to 500 billion DKK/year in 2025

– ENTSO-E: SmartGrids R&D-plan w. 31 specific R&D projekts for 2 mia. € with start 2010-13

– IEA: Actuel R&D level within SmartGrids only 10% of what is needed

Smart Grids in the Government Energy Strategy 2050

• ”the government will cooperate on a dissemination of smart grids in Denmark ...”

• ”the government will work for a doubling of the funding for research, development and demonstration within the energy field, and have large focus on the coming EU budget, especially for sustainable energy, smart grids and energy efficiency towards 2020 as compared to the present level”.

• “The government will actively support establishment of test environments for green solutions in Denmark …”

• Secure a sufficient intake of candidates and researchers for the green sector …”
