    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The report relates to the research conducted in the current situation of utility industry in Pakistan and how

Mobilink can diversify. This report gives recommendations for increasing awareness in government sector to

    introduce smart meters in Pakistan

Revenue of utility companies in Pakistan are above 10 billion USD. Mobilink can provide it infrastructure on

revenue shared model / rental basis. It will help in soaring Mobilink profits and also will open ne streams of

    businesses.

Various telecom operators in the Europe and America are already providing such services to utilities companies,

Verizon , O2, Telefonica to name a few.

For broadband and telecommunications service providers, the smart grid represents a compelling opportunity to

differentiate their service packages and create new revenue streams with home automation and energy

management services. With the smart grid, broadband providers can further extend their reach inside the home

with innovative, practical applications that improve everyday life by enabling homeowners to monitor and control

their home appliances. This whitepaper educates telecommunications and broadband service providers on the

concepts and latest developments in the smart grid, with particular focus on the Home Area Network (HA N), and

the technologies used to communicate among the utility, smart meter, smart appliances, and homeowner. This is a

critical time to keep an eye on developments in the smart grid, and service providers should be well prepared to

take advantage of smart grid applications in the near future

ADVATAGES OF CHOOSING FOR OPERATOR OR WHAT MOBILINK CAN PROVIDE

Cellular WAN solutions offer a number of advantages for Smart Metering deployments. First, when a utility

chooses cellular communications, they can rely on the mobile operator to provide the network  – instea d of

having to bear the cost of deploying, operating, and maintaining the entire communications infrastructure

themselves. By outsourcing the communications network to a mobile operator, energy suppliers can radically

reduce both installation costs and implementation times for the ir Smart Metering projects . In addition, mobile

operators increasingly view machine - to - machine (M2M) communications as an important and growing

subscriber market and are implementing new service offerings and billing approaches to compete for this business.

As a result, data rates for WAN - based Smart Metering communications are now extremely competitive.Today’s

cellular coverage also extends literally everywhere, covering approximately 99 percent of the addressable

population for Smart Metering infrastructures. Indeed, most areas are covered by multiple cellular networks, allowing utilities to deploy Smart Meters using the best cellular network available depending on location, and

maintain backup network capabilities. Finally, c ellular WAN is now a proven technology that is more than capable

of supporting Smart Metering infrastructures. Cellular technology has existed for more than 20 years, and the

security and flexibility of wireless communications is no longer debated. In fact , 1 billion machines already use

cellular networks today, and data communication (typically IP - based) now makes up 20 percent of all cellular

    communications worldwide.

    INFRASTRUCTURE

In developing a mobile network, operators have core competences that are essential to their business that are

easily transferred into supporting utilities services:- • Network security • High availability and resilience in disaster

situations • User Authentication • Billing, customer care and CRM • Subscription and Device management These

are essential aspects of managing customers and their devices on
