Today’s Objectives

• How to understand analytical data

• How to use this analytical data to create

syndication tactics

• How to automate elements of your social

media posts

• How to use automation to gather better data &

improve your tactics.

Throughout this

presentation, I’d like us to

keep in mind 2, wise things

said by 2, brilliant

Americans.

All of these analytical

platforms are great, but

Google Analytics is the

greatest because it

measures what’s on

your site.

TM

Today, we’re going to

focus on social data,

its impact on your

blog, and how to get

more traffic.

TM

Normally, if you log into Google

Analytics>> Acquisition>> Social>>

Network Referrals, you’ll see something

like this.

It’s kinda useful.

You could sort by these

for more data.

Or you could click on

these and drill down. But it’s hard & can take

a long time.

TM

Better Solution:

Google Analytics Custom Reports

Helps you understand how visitors are seeing your site.Helps you understand which pages and content are

interesting to the visitors from this social network.

Helps you understand when people are visiting your

site from this social network. (Day and Hour allows

you to drill down deeper.)

TM

Pinterest Reporting Can Be a Tad

Different (And Better)

By drilling down to the “full referral path” in

Pinterest reports, you can see the pin url

that referred you traffic. With this data, it’s

easy to figure out which pins--and which

pinners--send you the most traffic.

TM

12#SoFabUOTR

To Recap: Why Custom Reports?

• Know which devices are driving you traffic, so you can

ensure that your site is optimized for these devices.

• Know which landing pages bring you the most traffic by

platform; find & use thematic patterns to fuel your posting

strategy.

• Know (for Pinterest) which pins are sending you the most

traffic.

• Know which days and hours bring you the most traffic, so

you can post when your social audience is online*

*Caveat: Just because people are finding your site at

certain times doesn’t mean those are the times you

should be posting.

TM

TM

15#SoFabUOTR

*Back to that

caveat.

TM

16#SoFabUOTR

If one of your posts

takes off, traffic

could come in

much later than the

initial, shared post.

Google Analytics

can’t measure this

out of the box

easily.

TM

17#SoFabUOTR

You can use a tool like SocialBro to figure out

when your Twitter followers are online.

On Twitter (for the most part), clicks to your site come fairly quickly

after you tweet out a link, so you’ll get a good, general idea of when to

post.

TM

18#SoFabUOTR

Facebook>> Your Page>> Insights >> Posts

is a good place to figure out when your

audience is online & it’s fairly accurate.

Kinda looks like a whale, doesn’t it? :DYou can also export your analytical data and

analyze it by post type to see if there’s variations in

consumption patterns by post … but it takes awhile

:/

TM

19#SoFabUOTR

You could try and glean optimal

Pinteresting posting times from your GA

data …

… but it is downright flummoxing. Best

to use a 3rd-party tool for this one.

I like

TM

When you pair custom reporting

from your site with insights from

different social platforms it can help

you make data-driven decisions.

And it feels pretty good.

TM

21#SoFabUOTR

This is how you’ll feel

the first time you pull

custom reports from

your analytics package.

How you’ll feel after going

through all the reports the

first time.

A little data is better than none, and

consistency is the key.
