In the new age that is sweeping across global cities, lone work is out.


Over the past 20 years, dramatic changes have occurred in

the perception of work and workplaces. The overturning of

the industrial age, with its production approach to all work,

has quite suddenly accelerated and the era is fast coming to

a complete end. Workspaces are hurriedly being adjusted to

fit in with a new age. Work is now known by different names.

In the production age, every machine (otherwise known as

a person) operated in its own sphere, and connected with

others only when strictly necessary. Any other interaction

was likely to be a distraction. Effectiveness of meetings was

essential, to ensure the speediest return to the production

line – whatever ‘production’ meant for that individual.

Flexibility and creative liberty were dangerous and threatened

managers’ ability to control.

In the new age that is sweeping across the Western world,

collaboration and flexibility are the essential ingredients of

today’s approach to work. Increasing initiative and innovation

in every individual, collective output is more important than

personal achievement. And with technology providing

connection from anywhere with colleagues and partners all

over the globe, the exact location of work is no longer fixed.

Workspaces are adapting to this new and dynamic approach

to work. Open and stimulating environments, with the

flexibility to work in different locations and collaborate freely

and informally with colleagues, is essential to harness the full

potential of today’s creative energy. And full facilitation of up-

to-the-minute technology is vital – it is the circulation system

which carries the life-blood of effective collaboration.

for multiple ways of working. With an emphasis on teamwork

and interaction, it will still provide for times of personal focus

The new generation of workers is steadily growing within our

workplaces. This is the generation known as the millennials,

or Generation Y – born between 1982 and 2000 and currently

between their teens and thirties. This generation succeeds

the generation dubbed as Generation X (born between early

1960s and 1982), which in turn succeeded the Baby Boomers

(born between 1946 and early 1960s).

Millennials are causing the greatest shift in workplace

expectations. The industrial model of workplace layout is

thoroughly rejected by millennials, who expect an open,

collaborative, and 100% IT-enabled work environment. They

are typically energetic, creative and need empowerment

to succeed.

Creating and maintaining motivation for millennials is the

challenge of all managers in today’s business. It is not a

challenge to be ignored. The millennials cannot simply be

put in their place and told to abide by the rules of yesteryear.

They are the workers of tomorrow and they have every

means of communication at their disposal to make their

voice heard. And they also have the skills needed to succeed

in today’s business environment.

Workspaces need a greater sense of energy and vibrancy,

coupled with healthy social interaction. They must

allow for multiple styles of working and support creative

approaches to teamwork and solution finding. Technology

and communication needs to be woven seamlessly into the

workplace infrastructure, not added as an afterthought when

the conventional items have been installed.

Workspaces for millennials can cause some unrest among

baby boomers, and possibly Generation X as well. This

potential unrest needs to be managed and some areas

within workplaces that nod more towards conventional work

approaches will help to smooth the transition. But change

they must, because workspaces of yesterday will not attract

and retain the new workers of today and tomorrow.
