Jock Boydhttps://about.me/jock.boydHi my name is Jock and I work for Think: CLASS which is part of Think: Education part of Laureate International University. We run DEP courses and I specialise in the Design Faculty. I also do Academic Skills workshops for all students both online and face-to-face. We are part of the laureate group so I also help out with Torrens University in Adelaide. 2Smart Campus?Smart StudentsSmart SpaceSmart TechnologySmart PedagogyI would like to have a quick poll and that requires you to down load an app http://polls.bb/vote

They are not always engaged in the classroom or online. How do we revitalize the learning space both BRICKS & CLICKS6Smart Students?

Interact with Technology DAILY!

Powerful learning tools MOBILE DEVICES!

Learning is in their HANDS!

They use the technology via apps, the internet dailyFrom when they get up to when they go to bed and now with sleep apps even while theyre asleep.

These are powerful learning devices that use things like gamification and of course google. As Einstein said Never memorize something thatyou can look up that means everything we know, do or need is online in the cloud or can be accessed via our phones.

And learning is really in the learners hands with the creation of Personal learning environments, moocs, spocs and learning games . Students are told and expect that they can Study any where any how and any when. 7Smart Space?

Open learning

Student centered

Connected & integratedGone is the sage on the stage and welcome to the guide on the side and so the physical space is changing. Learning is open, student centered and connected. Technology is pushing its way into the campus and the ESL classroom. This is our space at the Design Campus in Ultimo, we also have a classroom of course, but times are changing and the learning space is going to have a greater affect on learning & teaching. 8

Smart Technology?

And this brings us to Smart technology. There are Learning management systems, social networks, games, podcasts, blogs, youtube and augmented reality. And these are delivered through webpages, the cloud and Apps. They are always changing always developing and always present in the Smart campus. So how do we manage this Smart Campus. 9Theories

There are a number of Learning theories associated with the ESL classroom, I wont go through all of them, but there are some great resources available online of course. Behaviorism, Cognitivist, Constructivism, Design-Based, Humanism and the compulsory 21st Century Skills. The Carrington Padagogical Wheel is a great example of how we as teachers can start looking at the Smart Campus and the technology embedded within it. 10SAMR Modelby Dr Ruben Puentedura

The SAMR Model, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, describes technology integration through four levels defined as follows:Substitution: Technology is used as a direct substitute for what you might do already, with no functional change.Augmentation: Technology is a direct substitute, but there is functional improvement over what you did without the technology.Modification: Technology allows you to significantly redesign the task.Redefinition: Technology allows you to do what was previously not possible. The smart campus is not replacing the traditional classroom but innovating the content and pedagogy that we use now.

11

The most important theory that has influenced my Smart Campus is TPACK stands for Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge, and its the interaction between these three concepts as they relate to teaching in a technology enhanced learning environment.

12MULDMore Upload Less DownloadAnd this has led me towards an idea that we have been exploring at Think: CLASS More Upload Less Download. If students are just consuming whats available online they arent learning, we need to changed them from consumers to producers of English. And technology lends itself to this upload mindset. When students are creating, developing and shareing online English becomes second nature, it like the internet, becomes ubiquitous. 13If we teach today as we taught yesterday,We rob our students of tomorrow. (John Dewey)

Full body education(Sir Ken Robinson)

So we need to remember that

And we really should be giving students a 14Questions?What makes a teacher/student/manager smart?

What makes a campus smart?

Are we ready for a smart campus?

How can we facilitate this change? Engage

Ive created a virtual room with Todaysmeet. You can ask questions regarding anything you see during today's presentation. It works well in classes where you have quite students or shy teachers.

Either scan the code or type in the addresshttps://todaysmeet.com/[email protected]

Now to answer or discuss those questions you can post them at todays meet Or Tweet them with to #ueca2015 16Twitter

The Smart Student

The Smart teacher

Ive split this into three parts, some are more interesting than others.

18Managing the Smart Campus

Managing the smart campus is becoming easier, Lets start with a poll Blackboard Poll

For those of you who dont have a commercial LMS dont worry because there are a host of free and semifree choices.

Nearpod https://app.nearpod.com/#/market?view=npPreview&id=c5fd2603e9811c2dc732d7352f310714-0&element=npp&ar=lbhttps://app.nearpod.com/#/market?view=npPreview&id=601ffd3ce3226920127540f6d6eaa505-0&element=npp&ar=lb

Chalkup https://www.chalkup.co/overview#

19Managing the Smart Campus

Nearpod is really a classroom management system and the free version allows you to create whole lessons, if you pay it also lets you track students. You can use premade free lessons or you can create your own, you can even make some money on the side.

Chalkup again gives you a free version and a full LMS version very much like Blackbaod or Moodle.

Its great for a flipped classroom situation. And this is what the Smart Campus is all about, expanding the learning from the classroom into their own home, or the bus or even at work. This gives them that feeling of English in the raw, its not just in the classroom.

21Managing the Smart Campus

Verso is another great LMS which also works well with the smart phone app.

22The Smart Student

The Smart Student has a plethora of technology from games and webpages to apps and augmented reality. The smart student already lives in a smart campus its just that we often aren't there. We all know about facebook and youtube and how theyve added to the student experience. Ive picked two apps that students can use to help their learning experience.

23The Smart Student

Elavate, http://elevateapp.com/

A brain trainer it does cost money but for some students it could be very helpful. It has things like reading comprehension, vocabulary building and even some pretty good listening exercise. Its probably intermediate up.

24The Smart Student

Periscope is new and very interesting. It could be fun and it could be very dangerous, anything live can be a disaster. Its twitter on video and its live. So like Skype you are capturing a live event and people can then comment on the feed itself. I know it sounds very problematic but you can close it down for only follows to have access to the video feed. This is great for that bit of authenticity to you lesson. Students could go outside the classroom and feedback to each other what they are doing and where they are, the class could then give suggestions or answer questions about the location or the procedure they are doing. I have tried it once and it worked well.25The Smart Teacher

Creates engagement.

I use it to check understanding of grammar points, reading comprehension and listening exercises.

It is good to encourage the quieter students to get involved.

Its FUN!

The Smart Teacher has a number of choices to make their classes more interesting and engaging. They of course use an app. Kahoot is a great quiz app that at the moment is free and it has a number of great classroom applications. So lets try it. 26The Kahoot AppAndroid phones download from the Play Store.

27The Smart TeacherLayar is a Augmented Reality Browser that can display digital information on top of the real world objects through the camera of your mobile phone.

Download the free app and register.

Try it out, it does work. The Layar app also allows you to use your positional data to find interesting things around you in real time.

The last thing Im going to talk about is augmented realty.Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing ones current perception of reality.28Scan Me To See Me

29Reflection

Using the image: These human remainsand others within the collection, are being exhibited for educational purposes and for entertainment. Is it ethical to treat human remains in this way?

Remember toframe your answer around how you feel about viewing these human remains.

You can tweet your response using the #niftyjock or write your response on the forum page in the Study Buddy drop down menu .

The Smart Campus uses smart teachers and gives them smart tools and we need to give them ongoing support while evaluating the pedagogical effectiveness of the technology used. A smart campus is dependent on a reliable service of anytime anywhere access to the internet. The smart use of instructional and supportive technology can only enhance our ability to teach students. And if we remember the idea of MULD then we have active students actively learning in active environments. 31
