Rehabilitation Research in Korea
In addition to patients with stroke or spinal cord injury, rehabilitation therapy also focuses on patients who suffer pain and experience struggle from walking and daily living ac-tivities.
The clinical practice in Korean rehabilitation medicine includes experts in various fields, such as specialists in rehabilitation medicine and re-habilitation nurses; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; and rehabilitation psychother-apists as well as rehabilitation social workers.
As of 2017, 2,113 rehabilitation medicine specialists have provided specialized rehabilitation therapy in each hospital for advancement in treatment and research.

Why Korea?Rehabilitation 2
1 Korea’s NeuroRehabilitation Research in the World
In 2015, the 1st Asia-Oceanian Congress for NeuroRehabilitation was held in Seoul to inform the world about Korean cranial NeuroRehabilitation through interaction with rehabilitation specialists from around the world.
As of 2018, NeuroRehabilitation specialists have been trained in 77 hospitals nationwide. In addition, many hospitals specializing in NeuroRehabilitation across the country actively provide rehabilitation therapy for patients with brain diseases and patients in need.

2 Pediatric Rehabilitation Research in Korea
The Korean Society of Pediatric Rehabilitation and Developmental Medicine (KSPRDM) provides an annual academic conference and a biannual seminar to provide practicing doctors of pediatric reha-bilitation with opportunities to learn the basics as well as state-of-the-art knowledge.
Since the year 2017, KSPRDM has conducted the certification evaluation test for the pediatric reha-bilitation specialist to train and assess skilled specialists in the field of pediatric rehabilitation.

3 Korea’s World-Class Respiratory Rehabilitation Research
Since the year 2000, Korea has refined its academic and clinical system of respiratory rehabilitation to a world-class level. From 2010 to 2018, 24 doctors from around the world have come to Korea for training in respiratory rehabilitation.
Though the medical field of respiratory rehabilitation can prevent postoperative complications in medical and surgical patients in need of respiratory management and rehabilitation, such treatment is available only in a very few countries.

4 Robot Rehabilitation Research in Korea (KORERO)
KORERO was established on May 31, 2018 for rehabilitation specialists and robot engineers. Reha-bilitation robots can maximize the effect of rehabilitation therapy by providing a sufficient number of iterations and treatment capacities, which are otherwise unavailable through conventional man-power and systems.

1 Neurological, Spinal Cord, and Robot Rehabilitation Therapy
Rehabilitation Using a Walking Robot
In Korea, the domestically developed Walkbot by P&S Mechanics and Morning Walk by Curexo are widely used by patients suffering from spinal cord injuries in a number of medical institutions, with the effect of the treatment reported.
Wearable Walking Robot
Korean researchers are actively developing a wearable walking robot and a WalkON suit, which were jointly developed by the Sogang University robotic system control laboratory and Yonsei University College of Medicine biomechanics and robotic rehabilitation therapy laboratory. Worn by a paraplegic patient with a spinal cord injury, the suit was placed in the third in the 2016 Cybath-lon, a world robot competition for the disabled.
Upper Limb Robot-Assisted Rehabilitation Therapy
Korea has been actively participating in the development of the upper limb rehabilitation therapy robot, as well as the research done with the conventional robot of this kind. It is also involved in the development of a new rehabilitation therapy robot that resolves issues the conventional robot has, and the effects have been reported.

As for aid devices, below are images of a wrist brace, a C-shaped spoon, and keyboard typing aid which help patients with limb paralysis. They can be prescribed by various hospitals that treat patients with spinal cord injuries.
Virtual reality (VR)
In the field of rehabilitation, various programs using virtual reality systems are being developed for therapeutic purposes. Virtual reality programs can provide an augmented reality similar to the actual, or more realistic simulation of, relearning training after brain disease. The importance of the field of rehabilitation is increasing because it can promote learning exer-cise by using various feedback mechanisms. Korea has also been reporting various studies of rehabilitation using virtual reality as a strong information technology (IT) country.

Subject Effect
•Chronic obstructive lung disease (chronic bronchitis or emphysema) •Respiratory muscle weakness (neuromuscular disease and patients
with spinal cord injury)
→ Patients with respiratory failure
Airway secretions removed, complications prevented and patients’ daily living abilities improved
Subject Effect
Patients who have received procedures or sur-geries for coronary artery disease, heart failure, or cardiac and peripheral artery diseases
Cardiomotor ability recovery, psychological stability, cardiovascular risk factor management, heart disease relapse prevention and reduced need for an additional surgery
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test
The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) is performed to accurately assess the patients’ cardio-pulmonary function and exercise capacity. It consists of a stress electrocardiography test and a respiratory gas analysis test.
Invasive method and non-invasive respiratory assist method
If the neck muscles can function well enough to pronounce words and ingest food, the noninva-sive respiratory aid can be provided, with no incision needed. Patients prefer this method for its convenience, speech, ingestion, sleep, and comfort.
For a professional monitoring system, Electrocardiogram (ECG) is monitored, and blood pressure and exercise self-recognition index are also remotely measured.
Cough Induction Equipment
It is a device that induces coughing in place of the inspiratory and expiratory muscles. A strong aerobic force similar to cough is generated through application of positive pressure to the lungs for air injection, followed by a momentary negative pressure.
