Linking Information
SmarTeam enables you to create two types of links between objects:
• Tree Links
• General (Associative) Links
11 of 18
SmarTeam User Training
Tree Links Tree links describe hierarchical parent/child relationships between
all types of information in the SmarTeam database. Attributes, such
as quantity, can be defined in tree links.

Adding Objects
When adding objects to the SmarTeam data management structure:
• Data (metadata) about the object is added in the Profile Card
• For File-Managed Objects (objects representing a file):
– You add information regarding the file (file name and directory)
– The file remains in its original location
When adding objects to a tree:
• You can select from among various types of possible objects,
depending on which tree is displayed and on your setup
• The new object is displayed as a child of the selected object in
the tree (a Tree Link is created between the new object and
selected object)
• You must fill out a Profile Card for the new object

Deleting an object from SmarTeam does not destroy the object:
• You can delete an object from the SmarTeam database.
or
• You can delete an object from the Tree Browser (Desktop):
– Tree links will be broken, but the object remains in the SmarTeam database.

What is Life Cycle Management?
SmarTeam enables you to maintain and manage any
information related to a revision-manageable object, together with all its components (children), throughout its life cycle.
SmarTeam life cycle management enables you to do the
following:
• Automate the flow of objects and all other revision-
manageable objects through different stages of
development
• Control and access the many revisions of an object
• Save and restrict access to files using an electronic
vault
85 of 18
SmarTeam User Training
All new objects are automatically assigned the temporary state
New .
As you revise an object, you can perform the following life cycle
operations:
Check In Changes object’s state to Checked In. Moves the object’s file to
the Check In vault for safekeeping, where it is publicly available.
Check Out Creates a minor revision of the object. Copies the
object’s file from the vault to the user’s working directory so it
can be modified by the current user only.
Release Creates a major revision of the object. Moves the object’s file to
the Release vault, preventing further modification.
New Release Creates a new revision of the object. Checks out a new
version of the released object’s file for modification.
Obsolete Changes the object’s state to Obsolete. Moves the object’s file
to the Obsolete vault, where it becomes inactive.
Life Cycle Operations
