If you’ve been to a STARS.T.E.A.M. (science, technology,

engineering, arts & math) eventin the past year, you might knowby now: 3D printers are real, andthey’ve been playing an increas-ingly large role in our classrooms. As a leader in S.T.E.A.M. educa-tion in Los Angeles, it’s only natural for STAR to be exploringone of the most talked about newtechnologies!

Although STAR only initiated our3D printing curriculum in the lastyear, we’ve already had over 100students experience the program.Ranging from elementary school children to highschoolers, students in STAR classes haveused the technology to designand produce different objects, from simple shapes to real modelcars. Because 3D printing is relatively new, software is not entirely kid-friendly. That means

our students get the opportunityto work with professional gradesoftware for the full, real-worldexperience! Although there are afew challenges, some of ouryounger learners have continuallypersevered and expressed feel-ings of immense accomplishmentthroughout the entire design andproduction process. The sense ofpride shown in their projects byour 3D printing students is magi-cal!

Want to learn more about our useof 3D printers in the classroom?Visit solidoodle.starinc.org to readan interview conducted by one ofour partners in 3D printing, Solidoodle, with the head of withSTAR’s Technology and Gamesdepartment.

Wow! This year, STAR EcoStation received over $9,000 indonations and animal caresupplies from the wonderful4th grade classes of the Willows Community School! This Culver City school hasparticipated in two annual jog-a-thons to raise funds forall of our rescued exoticwildlife, and sponsored addi-tional animal care projects.Last summer, their 4th gradeclasses’ donations covered thecosts of reconstructing ourtwo largest outdoor aviaries. This project meant more sunshine and outside playtimefor our three dozen rescuedparrots!

This year’s jog-a-thon proceeds will go towards oneof our biggest goals- renovat-

ing our Bird Paradise! We anticipate this donation willcover up to half of the project,so we will continue to fund-raise for the remaining costs. The STAR Eco Station truly appreciates all the supportfrom these generous and en-thusiastic students and all ofthe community. We are in aweof how much children can dowhen they find something theybelieve in. Thank you, WillowsCommunity School, and all ofour wonderful STAR friendsand families that have contin-ued such remarkable support!

Quick Tips for a Trash-Free Lunch!

Thank you Willows Community School!

Looking for a simple way to go green this

back to school? Look no further than your

midday meal! On average, a student throws

away over 67 pounds of trash each school

year, some of it recyclable or even com-

pletely avoidable. Here are a few tips for

packing a waste-free lunch:

- Invest in a quality lunch tote. A fun pat-

tern can brighten anyone’s day!

- Buy (palm-oil free) snack items in bulk

and package them in reusable containers

or baggies (we love using Re-Pac Bags as

they are so easy to wipe clean!)

- Pack a set of washable kid sized silver-

ware.

- Ask your student to bring home any left-

overs, and adjust portion sizes so we can

eliminate food waste!

With these simple tips we can make a great

impact on protecting the planet! And to

start the school year off right, all STAR

families can receive a special discount on

Re-Pac bags orders August 1-October 15,

2014. To receive 30% off your entire order,

visit http://www.re-pacbags.com/ and enter

dling and taxes excluded).
