    2D Symbols: An Overview

SmartPlant 2D Symbols Users Guide 11

2D Symbols: An OverviewThe 2D Symbols utility is used to create symbols and facilitate using these symbols ina modeling environment. The main purpose of 2D Symbols is to graphically create aflexible symbol definition so that it can be used to place different objects in a model. You use 2D Symbols to create:

The graphic representation or inputs of the symbol.

Named symbol geometry, such as edge names used to orient the symbol inthe 3D environment and to constrain different types of symbols to eachother.

    Parameters, such as driving dimensions.

Geometric constraints (relationships) that specify which reference data

parameters control which part of the symbol.

Multiple representations, which can be selected in the model to control

    how the symbol is displayed.

Additional auxiliary graphic objects to create and constrain symbols. These auxiliary objects do not become a part of symbol output geometry.

2D Symbols also completes the first step in adding a new cross-section to the catalogdefinition by loading symbol representations and the path to the original symbol fileinto rigidly formatted Microsoft Excelfiles. The Microsoft Excel files are then usedfor bulk loading the symbols into the catalog database.

Symbol Parameters and User Att ributes

Symbol parameters and user attributes are user-definable. The names will vary fromcompany to company. The naming conventions delivered with the base catalog can beviewed on the CustomInterfaces worksheet of each symbol type's bulkload workbook.

Symbol parameters and user attributes are related in the following ways:

Symbol parameter names are mapped to user attribute names in the

    catalog.

Symbol parameter names are assigned within each symbol file.

User attribute names are assigned within each symbol type's bulkload file, although it can be added to the bulkload file by the symbol file via theAdd to Catalogcommand.

Symbol parameter names are unique within each symbol file, but can beduplicated between symbol files within the same symbol type (that is,

symbols defined by the same bulkload file and within the same class nodeof the catalog).

User attribute names are unique within each symbol type.

Within each symbol type, a user attribute name can only have one symbolparameter name assigned to it.

Within each symbol type, a symbol parameter name can appear multipletimes as long as each occurrence is assigned to a different user attributename.

To avoid adding multiple names that define the same types of parameters to thecatalog, you should develop naming conventions before you start creating your 2-Dsymbols.

It is usually best to give symbol parameters and user attributes the same names foreasy cross-reference.

The geometry of a symbol consists of one or more closed contours comprised oflines, arcs, and other graphics. In order for the software to know which line or arccorresponds to which part of your symbol, you must name each geometric element.

    Edge names are:

Standard for each type of symbol

Internal to the symbol, but are associated with symbol representations, which are exposed externally through the catalog

Hard-coded values in the software for profiles. That is, only anadministrator can change the edge names described here.

User-definable for slots and collars and end cut edges (for example,WebFace1, FlangeFace1). The names shown below were designed to worklogically with the profile edge names and are recommended but not

    required.

Used to associate symbol representations to each other (for example, associate a slot to a cross-section):

Character and Keyword Restrictions: An Overview

SmartPlant 3D reference data includes: symbol files; rules written in Visual Basic;and Excel bulkload files used to create and populate SQL tables in the catalog

database. The text-string names in reference data are used by several applicationssuch as SQL Server, Visual Basic, 2D Symbols, and Solid Edge. The text strings mustconform to the character and key word restrictions of these applications.

If illegal characters or reserved keywords are used, SmartPlant 3D database views inSQL are corrupted. This affects reports and drawing labels using the specific views. For example, a report that attempted to use a slot parameter with an illegal characterwould fail. The views are not used by the detailing rules so this slot parameter wouldnot cause a problem with detailing.

    Restricted Text Strings

In 2D Symbols, restrictions apply to parameter names and symbol file names.

In Excel bulkload files, restrictions apply to the following text strings:

    Worksheet Text String Comments

All Sheet Name Blank spaces in part classsheets are deleted by thebulkload software. Otherillegal characters are notremoved. We recommendthat you treat the sheet

Text strings that provide description data, such as Part Description or MaterialDescription, may contain blanks.

    Al lowed Characters

Restricted text strings should follow these rules for character usage:

    Allowed Characters Not Allowed

    The first character must be:

    A letter

    An underscore (_)

    The first character cannot be:

    A number

    A letter Blanks

    A number (

    $ )

    _(underscore) {}

Reserved Keywords in SQL Server 2000 and ODBC

Restricted text strings must not be any of the following keywords reserved by SQLServer 2000, SQL-92, and ODBC. For example, a restricted text string ADD is notallowed because ADD is a reserved keyword. However, the restricted text stringADD_Radius is allowed.

When creating symbol geometry, points can be used for many purposes in geometryconstruction. Key points have specific roles beyond geometry creation.

    Key points are:

Standard across all types of profile symbols

Internal to the symbol, but are associated with symbol representations

which are exposed externally to the catalog

Located on a geometric element (for example, an edge on the web, or themid axis) or at the intersection of two geometric elements (for example, atthe intersection of a web edge and a flange edge)

Multiple point names can be assigned to a key point, with each point name serving adifferent purpose.

    Key point numbering conventions

Key points are numbered consistently among all types of profile cross-sectionswithout regard to the number of geometric elements. This assures consistent behaviorin the software when changing cross-sections on a placed profile system. As a result, some points are coincident on some cross-sections. Key point numbering is based onan I-beam profile because it is the most complex shape; numbering for other profilesis derived from the I-beam.

Creating Structural Prof ile Cross Sections: AnOverview

These profile cross-sections are used in the Structure task.

Profile cross-section symbol definition using 2D Symbols allows:

Flexibility in the shape of the profile cross-section.

Referencing by other symbols such as slots and collars.

In a model, a cross-section symbol is placed on a member line and extrudedalong themember line to create the three dimensional profile of the member.

Because symbols are parametric, one symbol can be used to represent multiple cross-sections. For example, one angle symbol can be used for the entire AISC class of

    angles.

Cross-section symbols must be created in the positive U-V quadrant in 2D Symbols. When a profile is placed in the model, the U-V axes are mapped to the local X-Y axesof the member.

    Draw the Simple Physical Representation

The first step in creating your symbol is to create the simple physical representation. The software uses the simple physical representation to display the member in themodel and to calculate the member's volume and surface area. For more information, seeDraw the Simple Physical Representation, page 50.

    Dimension the Simple Physical Representation

In order to control the size of your cross section when you place it in the model, youneed to dimension the symbol. This dimensioning allows you to use one symbol torepresent multiple sizes of the same cross section. For more information, seeDimension the Simple Physical Representation, page 51.

    Draw the Detailed Physical Representation

The software does not use the detailed physical representation, so drawing thedetailed physical representation is optional. For more information, seeDraw theDetailed Physical Representation, page 53.

    Dimension the Detailed Physical Representation

Similar to dimensioning the simple physical, the detailed physical representationneeds to be dimensioned. For more information, seeDimension the Detailed PhysicalRepresentation, page 54.

    Define Dimension Variables

The Variable Tablefeature of SmartPlant 2D Symbols allows you to define andmanipulate drawing variables and their values, as well as establish functionalrelationships between the design variables. For symbols, you use the Variable Table

to set expressions for the symbol dimensions. For example, you could set the top andbottom flange dimensions to be equal and the web thickness to be 75% of the flangethickness. For more information, seeDefine Dimension Variables, page 55.

    Name Profi le Edges

The geometry of your symbol consists of lines, arcs, and other elements. In order forthe software to know which line or arc corresponds to which part of your symbol, youmust name each geometric element in the symbol. For more information, seeNameProfile Edges, page 56.

    Define Cardinal Points

A load point, also commonly referred to as a cardinal point, defines the locationwhere the software displays the profile cross-section on the member. There are 15load points definable for a cross-section symbol, but only one at a time is used whenthe profile is placed. For more information, seeDefine Cardinal Points, page 57.

    Test Symbol Geometry

To verify that the geometry is properly constrained and behaves correctly, you needto test the symbol. For more information, see Testing Symbol Geometry: AnOverview, page 68.

    Define Symbol Properties

One of the most important steps of symbol creation is to map the dimensions in yoursymbol to the corresponding symbol parameter in your catalog workbook. In theStructCrossSections.xlsworkbook, the symbol parameters are listed on the CustomInterfacessheet. For more information, seeDefine Symbol Properties, page 59.

Adding Symbol Data to the Catalog

Add the part class of the symbol to the appropriate workbook from which it can beloaded into the catalog database. For more information, seeAdding Symbol Data tothe Catalog, page 71.

Draw the Simple Physical Representation1. Open the symbol.

    2. Click Tools > Layersto display the Layertoolbar.

    Tip

The cross section template contains several different layers. Verify thatyou create the correct graphics on the appropriate layer. For example, you should create the simple physical representation graphics on theSimple Physical layer.

    Tip

You are not limited to the Linecommand. You can use any of the

graphic placement commands; arc, circle, rectangle, and so forth; tocreate your symbol.

    6. Use the commands on the Relationshiptoolbar to constrain the different parts ofyour symbol. For example, if you are drawing a tee shaped symbol, more thanlikely you want both sides of the top flange to be the same length. Therefore, youwould use the Equal relationship on the two lines that comprise the bottom,

    Creating Openings: An Overview

Openings are closed-shape structural cuts which are significant to both strength andweight analyses.

Like the Sketched Feature symbol, the Openings symbol is very basic. No graphicinputs are required in the symbol file. The (0,0) origin point of the 2D Symbols file isused as the default placement point for the symbol. The symbol geometry should bedefined about the 2D Symbols file origin point and constrained using horizontal andvertical constraints in such a manner as to get predictable placement results. Openingssymbol shapes MUST be a closed contour.

    Creating Openings Common Tasks

By following these tasks in order, you can create your own opening symbol quicklyand easily.

Open and Setup Up the Symbol File

The software delivers several templates that you can use to create your customsymbols. For more information, see Open and Set Up the Symbol File, page 45.

    Manage Layers and Display Settings

Create the required layers, and any optional layers, for the symbol. For moreinformation, seeManage Layers, page 45.

After you have created the layers, adjust the display settings to meet your needs. Formore information, see Set Display Settings, page 46.

Sketch and Constrain Opening Construction Elements

The first step in creating your symbol is to sketch and constrain the constructionelements. Construction elements aid in the definition and proper constraint of thefinal symbol geometry. For more information, see Sketch and Constrain OpeningConstruction Elements, page 63.

    Sketch and Constrain Opening Geometry

After the construction elements are defined, define the actual opening geometry andconstrain it. For more information, see Sketch and Constrain Opening Geometry,

    page 63.

    Group Opening Geometry

You must group the symbol geometry together. For more information, see CreateOpening Group, page 64.

    Define Symbol Properties

One of the most important steps of symbol creation is to map the dimensions in yoursymbol to the corresponding symbol parameter in your catalog workbook. For moreinformation, seeDefine Opening Symbol Properties, page 64.

Test Symbol GeometryTo verify that the geometry is properly constrained and behaves correctly, you needto test the symbol. For more information, see Testing Symbol Geometry: AnOverview, page 68.

    Define Symbol Representation

Assign the group to a symbol representation. For more information, see CreateOpening Symbol Representation, page 67.

Sketch and Constrain Opening Construction Elements

Construction elements are used to aid in the definition and proper constraint of thefinal symbol geometry. Because of the way openings are placed into a Draft 2D view, opening symbols can be constrained using horizontal and vertical constraints.

    1. Make the Constructions Layeractive.

    2. Place a point at the (0,0) origin of the 2D Symbols file, and then lock thepoint.

    3. Define the necessary horizontal and vertical construction lines relative to thesymbol origin.

    4. Define and constrain additional construction elements (lines, circles, and so forth)as needed.

    5.

    Make the Dimension Layeractive.

    6. Dimension the construction elements to further constrain and aid in the definitionof the geometry.

    7. Click a dimension in the graphics view, and enter the new dimension value toadjust.

    Sketch and Constrain Opening Geometry

When the construction geometry has been defined and dimensioned, the final openingsymbol geometry can be created and grouped.

    1. Make the Output Layeractive.

    2. Define, constrain, dimension, and trim the remaining geometry elements requiredto complete the symbol contour.

    Caution

All geometry in an opening must be connected to form a closed loop.

Create Opening Group1. Shift-click to select the lines and arcs that define the contour of the opening. This

group will be the output for the symbol. Do not select points, construction lines, dimensions, or constraints.

    2. Click Group from the horizontal toolbar.

    Caution

The geometry for the group mustbe selected in order in a clockwisedirection. As geometry is picked the contour should always form acontinuous curve and form a closed polygon when complete.

    3. Test the symbol geometry to ensure it is properly constrained and behavescorrectly by changing the values of the symbol dimensions while observing thechanges to the grouped contour. The grouped contour must remain closed andcontinuous.

    4.

After testing, return all dimensions to their original or required values.
