Careers: three interviews BY LINDA MACRIDGE

A. VET

‘I suppose it was my love for animals that made me decide on

this job,’ says Dr John Gordon. ‘The necessary qualifications

include a university degree, but if you don’t love animals you

can’t really do it. The salary is not as high as many people

believe and very often I have to visit farms away from the

village I work in. Sometimes there are risks. I remember once

when a pet snake attacked me! However, nothing compares

to helping an animal.’

B. POLICE DETECTIVE

Although to most of us this job sounds exciting, police

detective Chris Collins believes that there isn’t so much

glamour. ‘Working long hours and getting a low salary are

not what most young people dream of. People often believe

we are very famous. The truth is that the newspapers rarely

write anything about us. Our job doesn’t always have

successes. You need to be a strong person to survive the

pressure and you should have a good memory and a clear

mind. However, when you solve a mystery, you feel excited.’

C. ARCHITECT

‘It’s a difficult time for architects. You can be unemployed for

a long time after your university studies, but if you’re lucky at

the interview and you’re talented, you can become very

successful and earn a lot of money. Although computers

make the job much easier, you have to come up with

original ideas,’ says Tim Burton.

1 ___ the job offers a high salary?

2 ___ computers are helpful?

3 ___ you don’t become as famous as people believe?

While huge cities, original inventions and a comfortable lifestyle are

that no other creature on the planet has achieved so many things.

Ads everywhere1 ___

Ads are everywhere. They’re in newspapers, on the streets,

on the Internet, on television and radio. They’re so

common we don’t always notice them!

2 ___

Advertising a product or a service can be good for a

company. If the product wasn’t advertised, nobody would

know about it and nobody would buy it. If companies sell

their goods or services, then there is more work and more

people can find a job.

3 ___

Another advantage is the low cost of the media. If they

didn’t have adverts, newspapers and magazines would be

more expensive and fewer people would buy them. Many

TV and radio stations would close down because they

wouldn’t have enough money to survive.

4 ___

However, many people often complain about the poor

quality of adverts. They believe that adverts tell lies and

they just try to make people buy things they don’t want. It’s

certainly true that ads often promise that if you buy a

certain product you’ll be happier. It’s rarely true of course!

5 ___

People should use their intelligence. We shouldn’t believe

everything that adverts tell us and we should ask ourselves

if we really need what’s being advertised.
