Welcome to the St Martin-in-the-Fields concerts brochure for March and April 2019.
St Martin’s has a proud history of hosting some of London’s best live classical music. Audiences and performers come together in central London to enjoy evening classical concerts, free lunch-time concerts, educational concerts, concerts for families, late-night music events as well as a full programme of music in worship, all performed in St Martin’s wonderfully rich acoustic.
Whilst we are particularly well known for our popular evening concerts of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Vivaldi, dig deeper and you’ll fi nd an even richer and varied programme of music to appeal to all. Our free lunchtime concerts take place every Monday, Tuesday and Friday and feature some of the UK’s most exciting emerging young talent. Every Thursday at 1.00pm we present Great Sacred Music, our 35-minute lunchtime sequence to speak to heart, head and soul. Led by Revd Dr Sam Wells and St Martin’s Voices, it explores some of the great classical music of our religious heritage. And for something a little different, explore our jazz and live music evenings which take place most Wednesday evenings in our much-loved Café in the Crypt.
We are pleased to present our tenth annual Chamber Music Competition in March. All are welcome to the semi–fi nals which take place in a series of lunchtime concerts in early March, culminating in the fi nal on Tuesday 26 March at 7.30pm. We have a respected music programme for Holy Week and Easter, including a performance by the Gildas Quartet of Haydn’s Seven Last Words from The Cross on Monday 15 April, and Bach’s St John Passion on Good Friday on 19 April.
We look forward to welcoming you to St Martin’s.

Ńorthern Lights Symphony Ørchestra ŃLSØ is known for its specialism of music by composers born in the region of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
What is it about the music from this region that resonates with you and the orchestra? Space. In the eleven years since our debut, the Northern Lights Symphony Ørchestra has performed many “forgotten” works from Scandinavia and the UK. With previous recordings of these works often being unavailable, the ŃLSØ has been able to enjoy the discovery of our own tempi based upon the richness of expression, with essential consideration of the acoustics that St Martin-in-the-Fields affords. This freedom of interpretation has allowed us to work and rehearse in such a way that unites our orchestral ideas following our own sense of space and the awareness of the musical “epiphenomenon”. As a result, we have acquired a unique sound and presence on stage (through this wonderful repertoire) which our audiences continue to enjoy.
It is always difficult to choose just one favourite piece of music, but which works do you find yourself coming back to? Probably the music of Sibelius. I remember Sir Peter Maxwell Davies discussing Sibelius’ music with me. He concluded that it doesn’t represent nature in as much is it is pure music, but rather that it becomes part of nature itself. (PMD considered this also true of his own work.) I found this approach very powerful and our orchestra constantly strives to present our interpretations with this very much in mind.If I was to choose a work which we all found exceptionally powerful to perform, it would have to be his Seventh Symphony.
What is your musical guilty pleasure? Electronic dance music. I’ve always been fascinated by today’s club culture and how electronically driven dance music is so vital to our modern age. My aim is to fuse together orchestral and electronic textures in my own compositional writing, giving way to a new concert experience. Watch this space for more!

Piatti QuartetRead all about what’s happening with the Piatti Quartet, winners of our inaugural Chamber Music Competition in 2010.
Since performing at St Martin’s, where has the Quartet’s career taken you and what have been the highlights?
Being in a quartet takes you to many unusual places and venues. Part of the reason for this, is that the group can perform not only in someone’s living room, but can also project over a grand space. Over the years, we’ve performed in some amazing spaces acoustically along with some weird and wonderful ones. To name a few, we’ve performed in castles in Ireland, barns in rural England, freezing churches all over Scotland, and while thinking further afield, memories of an incredible hall in Istanbul, a chic art gallery in the Netherlands and an opera house in Italy all come to mind.
How did winning the competition back in 2010 help you professionally?
Winning the inaugural SMITF Competition was a big deal for us back in 2010. It was our first success at competition level and really brought us to the attention of so many promoters in the UK. The number of concerts we had planned for the season after went up dramatically following the competition and taking part was a great experience all-round.
What can we expect from Piatti Quartet over the coming months?
In the next few months, we will be performing a very exciting world premiére that we have commissioned from the amazing Mark-Anthony Turnage. This will be his fourth quartet and the first performance will be at the Flagey Festival in Brussels in March, and you can catch the UK premiere at Wigmore Hall on 25 May.
