Smithsonian History

• The construction of the Smithsonian started in 1847 by architect

James Renwick Jr.

• The Smithsonian Castle was the first building to be built.

• All of the buildings related to the Smithsonian is made of red Seneca

sandstone, in a faux Norman style.

• The Smithsonian was designated as a historic landmark in 1965.

• After the East wing was completed, in 1849, Secretary Joseph Henry

and his family occupied the living space.

• Before the museum was built, the west wing of “The Castle” was a

library. Now it is a quiet lounge for visitors to relax in.

• The main entry to the building is now the Great American Hall of

Wonders. This is part of the National Art Museum.

• On the second floor, before therewasan art gallery. Now it is the visitor

info and Associates Reception.

• The entire Smithsonian was completed in 1855.

The National History Museum

• The Natural History Museum, (NHM) is located in

the magnificent Smithsonian museums, in the

heart of Washington DC.

• The NHM is one of the most visited museums in

the Smithsonian.

• In the NHM, you can explore the different birds of

D.C, or learn about the evolution trail!

Inside the Museum

• NHM has many exhibitions

ones including:

• Earliest human origins;

development of world cultures;

ancient and modern mammals,

birds, amphibians, reptiles,

Insects, sea creatures, and

more!

• Admission is FREE

• Hours are 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily

• There is no public parking facility at the Smithsonian on the National Mall; on-street parking is limited and posted times are enforced.

Air and Space Museum

• The air and space museum is the largest museum in the nation that contains air and space history.

• The air and space museum is also rich in geology, science, planetary science, technology, terrestrial, and geophysics.

• In this museum, you can discover the history of flight, and many famous aircrafts!

Milestones of Flight

• This exhibit showcases a collection of historic flight achievements.

• This exhibit includes the 1903 Wright flyer.

• Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight in the Spirit of St. Louis.

• The Bell XP-59A Airacomet.

• The Bell X-1 in which "Chuck" Yeager broke the mythical "sound barrier.”

• The North American X-15

• SpaceShipOne

• Friendship 7

• The Apollo 11 command module Columbia, Mariner,

Rockets & Missiles

• The first rocket originated in China. In the

year 1000. In the next couple of decades,

rockets were changing around the 20th

century.

• In this exhibit, the missiles on display are

the Loon, Redstone, and the Henschel.

• One of the rockets on display is the

Goddard 1935 A-series.

Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight

• This exhibit captures the theme of many

great achievements. For example,

overcoming great barriers.

• This exhibit features the Douglas World

Cruiser “Chicago” which was one of the

first aircrafts to make it around the world.

• Another aircraft is the Lockheed 5B Vega.

This aircraft was flown by Amelia Earhart

in her first solo flight, across the Atlantic.
