TRANSFORMING THE MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON, DC—UPDATE

SmithsonianNational Air and Space Museum

+ @airandspace @airandspacemuseum #IdeasThatDefy

LAST YEAR THE MUSEUM BEGAN THE PUBLIC PHASE OF ITS SEVEN-YEAR RENOVATION. THIS LARGE-SCALE PROJECT WILL ADDRESS BUILDING OPERATIONAL NEEDS AND COMPLETELY TRANSFORM OUR GALLERY SPACES.

Although sections of the Museum are closed, there is still plenty to see. Seven galleries will remain open throughout the 2019-2020 school year: Milestones of Flight, How Things Fly, Wright Brothers, Space Race, Explore the Universe, Moving Beyond Earth, and Time & Navigation. The Lockheed Martin IMAX® Theater will also be open throughout the school year. We look forward to the reopening of the first phase of transformed galleries in 2022.

The project will include both Museum entrances, requiring each to be closed for a period of time. The entrance on Independence Avenue will be first. It is scheduled to close in fall 2019 and will reopen in early 2022.

LARGE SCHOOL GROUP OPPORTUNITIES (UDVAR-HAZY CENTER)Schools often bring an entire grade to the Udvar-Hazy Center. Although the Museum’s classrooms and traditional docent-led tours cannot accommodate groups greater than 180 students, we have developed programming for groups of 250-400 middle/high school students.

The large school group programs offer “spotlight” tours of key artifacts, presented by docents who are stationed at them. Students can also participate in a digital breakout room.

Large school group requests must be made at least two months in advance. Due to limited availability, this program is only available to students in grades 6-12. To request a large school group visit, please contact the Tours and Reservations Office directly at [email protected].

AT THE NATION’S PREMIER AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM WE SHARE STORIES OF IDEAS THAT DEFY—IDEAS THAT DEFY CONVENTION, IDEAS THAT DEFY GRAVITY, IDEAS THAT DEFY IMAGINATION.

FREE ADMISSION | OPEN EVERY DAY, EXCEPT DECEMBER 25, FROM 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM

WE TELL THESE STORIES THROUGH A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL CHANNELS THAT LET STUDENTS VISIT THE PAST, UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT, AND IMAGINE THE FUTURE AND THEIR ROLE CREATING IT. PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE JOURNEY.

Science demonstrations (free, reservations required)

These 25-minute, hands-on demonstrations cover a variety of STEM topics from early aviation to living and working in space. Minimum 10 students.

Self-guided audio tours (fees apply, group rates available)

If your students prefer a less structured experience, try one of our audio tours. Two versions are offered: one specifically for students (English) and a general highlights tour that’s appropriate for all visitors (English, French, Mandarin, and Spanish). Reservations not required. Minimum: two, maximum 170 (Museum in Washington, DC) and 60 (Udvar-Hazy Center).

Virtual Breakout Room (free, reservations required)

These free breakout rooms are online challenges based on the collections and stories of the National Air and Space Museum and Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center. Student teams engage in several online challenges solving puzzles in order to successfully break-out; receiving a reward. Groups must reserve programs at least three weeks in advance.

Guided group tours (free, reservations required)

Themed tours created just for student groups introduce young visitors to aviation and planetary exploration as they walk among key artifacts, such as the Wright Flyer, Space Shuttle Discovery, the Spirit of St. Louis, and an SR-71 Blackbird. Minimum 10 students; maximum 30 students at the Museum in Washington, DC; 180 students at the Udvar-Hazy Center

NEW Mars Bus (Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, free, Friday-Sunday only)

This bus has been transformed into a first-of-its-kind group virtual reality trip to the surface of Mars using NASA images and special effects made with the help of the same team that worked on the movie The Martian. Students will learn about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. After all, the first person to set foot on Mars is in school today! The Mars Bus can hold up to 30 people at a time.

STEAM labs (Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, free, reservations required)

These 60-minute, classroom-based programs use a combination of demonstrations, experiments, and hands-on activities to drive the learning process. Labs are based on the Museum’s collection and correlate to National Science Standards. Minimum 10, maximum 30 students per session.

IMAX films, simulators and virtual reality (fees apply, group

discounts available)Supplement your visit with a movie in one of the Museum’s giant screen theaters, a simulator ride, and/or virtual reality experience. These activities have been developed to correspond to the Museum’s collection and educational mission.

SAMPLE ITINERARIES THE MUSEUM’S EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS CAN BE MIXED AND MATCHED TO CREATE A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE BASED ON YOUR GROUP’S INTEREST. THE FOLLOWING SAMPLES DEMONSTRATE HOW VARIOUS OPTIONS CAN BE COMBINED.
