SMITIS Newsletter

8 February, 2013

Star Mountains Institute of Technology International SchoolOur purpose is to develop internationally-minded and life-long learners who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect, and strive to be: inquirers; knowledgeable; thinkers; communicators; principled; open-minded; caring; risk-takers; balanced; and reflective.

It’s time to say farewell as OTML has informed me that my services are not required in 2014. I am disappointed by OTML’s decision, but not surprised as it is consistent with

other decisions they have made for 2014.

Whilst sad to leave, I am pleased with what SMITIS achieved in 2013. I also leave with many valuable friendships and special memories. Tabubil was the perfect place to celebrate my 40th year in teaching.

I had the honour and privilege of being the guest speaker at yesterday’s Grade 8 Graduation Day for Tabubil Primary School. It was a special occasion to bring my time at Tabubil to a close, especially in light of the involvement of Tabubil Primary School in our Lighthouse Project.

What has disappointed me the most is the disregard for education (and health) to be the nation’s top priorities, let alone Tabubil’s top priorities. The first thing you notice around town is the number of school-aged children who obviously do not attend school. At the primary school level, they received funding of about K250,000 to cover costs for the year. There is

insufficient housing for their teachers, nor are there sufficient classrooms for their enrolments. This is a common story throughout the country.

As Nelson Mandel pointed out: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.’ It is so important that PNG and Tabubil experience some real leadership, so that its people receive what they deserve (good education and health services).

I always strive to make a difference in any school I lead and leave it a better place than it was before I arrived. However, only you can make that judgement.

I appreciated your support.
