WHAT IS “SMOKING”?

Smoking means breathing the smoke of burning tobacco leaves.

Tobacco is a plant with big green leaves.

Tobacco is processed for smoking in different ways. People smoke tobacco in pipes, cigars, waterpipes and cigarettes.

Tobacco is 2nd major cause of mortality in theworld & currently responsible for the death ofabout 1 in 10 adults worldwide.Every year hundreds of thousands of peoplearound the world die from diseases caused bysmoking.One in two lifetime smokers will die fromtheir habit. Half of these deaths will occurin middle age.

Tobacco contains nicotine,an addictive drug

Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels(coronary heart disease) whichleads to heart attack.

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive diseaseof the lungs thatprimarily causesshortness of breath. It isan illness that slowly rotsthe lungs. People withemphysema often getbronchitis again andagain, and suffer lung andheart failure.

Pregnant women who smoke…

Run a higher risk of miscarriage. Develop complications in pregnancy. Are 3X more likely to have smaller babies than average. Smoking reduces the chance of becoming pregnant again,

contributes to inadequate breast milk production andincreases the risk of birth defects.

Babies are a third more likely to be still born or diewithin the first week if born to smokers.

Babies and children whose parents smoke are twice aslikely to develop respiratory problems such as asthmaand bronchitis.

What is “SECONDHAND SMOKING”?

Secondhand smoke, also known as environmentaltobacco smoke or passive smoke, is the combination ofside-stream smoke, i.e. smoke that is emitted betweenpuffs of burning tobacco (cigarettes, pipes or cigars),and mainstream smoke, i.e. smoke that is exhaled bythe smoker.

What is “SECONDHAND SMOKING”?

Secondhand smoke is a complex mixture of thousands of gasesand particulate matter emitted by the combustion of tobaccoproducts and from smoke exhaled by those smoking.

SECONDHAND SMOKING EFFECTS

Secondhand smoke was declared to be carcinogenic. Healtheffects associated with exposure to Secondhand smoke havebeen well documented and include lung cancer, lowerrespiratory tract infections, asthma, cardiovascular disease,eye and nasal irritation and low birth weight in babies ofnonsmokers.

If someone in your house or restaurant or office oranywhere around you smokes, you are smoking, too.You, too, can get lung cancer and the other diseases nowknown to be associated with smoking.And you, too, are running the same increased risks tobecome sick and also, incidentally, to die.

SMOKING BANS IN LEBANON

According to Law number 174: As of 3 September 2012,

smoking has been prohibited in enclosed public places

such as restaurants, cafes, and hotel. Anybody violating this

ban will be charged with a fine of over 100$, and the

restaurant, the cafe or the hotel will be charged with a fine

between 1300$ and 4000$.

SMOKING BANS IN LEBANON

The association has called for excluding entertainment businessesfrom the ban, including pubs, nightclubs and nargileh cafes andhas asked that indoor smoking be allowed in venues with properventilation and age restrictions.

The anti-tobacco legislation has faced the criticism of the

associations of restaurants and hotels that have called for

amending it. They argue that it would cut business and drive some

establishments to bankruptcy.
