work starts soon on netball complex as final cash lands Gisborne

Construction could start as early as March on New Gisborne’s $1.8 million outdoor netball complex.

The last piece of funding from the federal government was announced by Senator Scott Ryan on a visit to New Gisborne on January 20. He announced the federal contribution of $325,000, adding to the $650,000 provided by the state government last year, $800,000 from

government, we’re able to build a complex of regional standard, which is what Netball Victoria wants and what we want,” she said.

“We’ve been in talks with Netball Victoria about holding the State Association Championships next year, which is a very exciting prospect.

“With the tenders being advertised now you can see it all becoming a reality.”

Mayor Roger Jukes said the complex responded to a growing demand for netball

Macedon Ranges council and $90,000 from the Macedon Ranges Netball Association.

The complex, on council-owned land on the corner of Barringo and Hamilton roads, includes eight courts, a pavilion with change rooms and about 250 car spaces.

MRNA president Carmen Hemphill said the complex would allow the association to introduce regional competitions.

“With all the parties coming to the table and with this money from the federal

in and outside the shire, driven by strong population growth.

“This facility will help meet current demand and provide for regional training and competition and a range of new programs such as a summer session, mixed competitions and school holiday programs,” he said.

Tenders to build the complex close on February 11 and the complex is expected to be completed by July. \ AV

life’s not a bowl of cherries as farmers battle weatherHEAT TOLL

This month’s week-long scorcher of above 40-degree temperatures has damaged farms in the Macedon Ranges. The heatwave, not usually seen in January, has caused some losses for fruit farmers.

John Learmonth, of Mount Gisborne Cherries in Gisborne South, said hotter temperatures caused fruit to ripen quicker.

“We had to work the whole week in the 40-degree heat. The hot weather means that picking comes on a bit earlier,” he said.

“We have to pick the fruit as it gets ripe so anything that was near ripe had to come off the trees straight away.

“It was a real struggle to keep up with picking.”

Mr Learmonth said some fruit was sunburnt, or damaged by the heat.

“We did have a bit of damage because of the heatwave, but there is still a lot of good fruit there.

“Anything that is in direct sunlight is damaged, but a lot of the fruit is underneath, covered and protected.”

The heat was just one factor contributing to a poor yield at the Woodend Berry Farm, a pick-your-own farm with about 700 fruit trees.

Manager David Mulholland said it had

been a hard two years at the farm.“With cold-climate berries like ours, we

usually harvest in the first or second week in January, and we’ve had nothing to

harvest at all.“The birds will pick off whatever

fruit we have; I don’t think it will get a chance to change colour and ripen. It’s not been a good season for us.”

Will Fraser, of Paramoor Winery in Carlsruhe, said vines were strong

and grapes could withstand environmental challenges so early in the wine season.

“If we had ripe or close to ripe grapes we might have had some problems, but it’s very early in the season for us,” Mr Fraser said.

“Our grapes are little green peas at the moment and can withstand the conditions pretty well.”

There was a report from a farm in Clarkefield that lost 70 chickens because of the heat. \

easy victory for hanging rock debutant Loukoumioff to the races

Outsider Loukoumi swept past the locally trained Bel Sir in the home straight to comfortably take out Sunday’s Hanging Rock Cup on a sun-kissed Australia Day.

The eight-year-old chestnut gelding, prepared by Mornington trainer Rick Harrison, notched up his 10th win from 57 starts to take his career prizemoney to more than $150,000.

Harrison conceded Loukoumi had been entered in several races over the weekend, including Saturday’s Great Western Cup, and a start in the Hanging Rock feature had been made five minutes before final acceptances.

“I looked for the easiest race for my horse to win to be perfectly honest,” he said.

“When there’s so many race meetings you don’t want to take a chance. A win’s a win.”

Harrison saddled up two runners for the day, snaring a race-to-race double after Dayton saluted in race four.

He said he had a gut feeling he was in for a good day from the get-go.

“The moment I hopped out of the car and looked at the track I took a deep breath and thought, I’m in for a good day. I could just smell it.”

Loukoumi took out the Gunbower Cup last year when first up from a spell and was again kept fresh for the 1800-metre race worth $15,000.

“Once he’s fit you’ve got to space his races. He doesn’t do a lot in between. He might be in the pool and have a gallop now and then,” Harrison said.

“With these horses the older they get the easier it is to get them fit.”

Loukoumi, in barrier one, jumped well from the gun and settled into third. He made his move around the 700-metre mark and quickly rounded up the leaders, with jockey Roger Booth riding hands and heels to the line for an easy win.

“As they came out from behind the trees all of a sudden he was second,” Harrison said. “It was quite a soft win in the end. [Booth] didn’t really get stuck into him. If he’s doing his job he’s doing his job.”

Harrison said Loukoumi would most likely

Dight also noted it was good to see Kyneton trainer Charles Cassar snare the opening race with Shirizzle, which was the only local win for the entire program.

He commended the club’s track staff members Ted Brown and Steve Smith for producing such a high-quality racing surface given the recent heatwave.

Dight said problems with kangaroos roaming the track, which have plagued the club in recent years and forced the cancellation of several meetings, had not been an issue this year. \

head towards the Pakenham Cup for his next start. The country trainer said it was the first time he had brought a runner to Hanging Rock, and he would be back next year after such an enjoyable experience.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club general manager Jon Dight said the race meeting was a sought-after experience for many trainers.

“They do travel from everywhere. It might be on the bucket list of trainers and owners to win a race at Hanging Rock.”

Dight said just under 5000 punters attended. “We were rapt. We thought it was a really good day and everyone was well behaved. It was great to see a lot of families and kids celebrating Australia Day.”

In his busiest school year, student cared for othersKyneton

John-Joe Wilson’s active leadership, sporting achievements and, ultimately, concern for others have led to the teenager being crowned Macedon Ranges’ young citizen of the year.

While completing year 12 at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton last year, the 18-year-old (pictured) was pivotal in establishing “Lookout”, a program focusing on the mental health, well-being and inclusion of younger students. He gained the support of other senior students who embraced the program,

giving up their time to mentor younger peers. “The well-being and mental health of young people is a really vital thing,” he says.

“I thought we could do more in the school. I wanted to be proactive in supporting others rather than just sitting back and saying that we needed to do something.”

It was the support of Ian Huke, a member of the school’s student welfare department, that John-Joe says helped get the program off the ground. His leadership

roles within school and community have gained him recognition and respect of

young and old. At the end of 2012, John-Joe received the Australian Defence Force’s Long Tan leadership award, and he was recognised for his community involvement by Macedon Ranges council in its

youth awards last year. Also last year, he represented Victoria

at national competitions in orienteering and cross-country running for the fourth consecutive year. \ AV

Kyneton’s Eric Scoble received a community achievement award for his work with the Daffodil Society of Kyneton and the town’s daffodil and arts festival. He has coached soccer clubs for more than 20 years and been involved in Little Athletics for 27 years. Beth Hipworth, Emma Goodwin, Luke

Wren and Gabrielle Martin, who make up the Windarring Meals on Wheels team, also received a community achievement award.

The community event of the year award went to Kyneton’s free Christmas lunch, one of whose organisers is Maryann Falkland.

An arts ambassador award was presented to Jill Rivers, who promotes and mentors artists in the Macedon Ranges and Daylesford region. \

ranges pair awarded ambulance medals

Two Macedon Ranges residents have been awarded Ambulance Service Medals

Grant Hocking, of Woodend, who works as clinical support manager in the Grampians, won recognition for a career spanning more than 25 years involving many roles that have helped shape Ambulance Victoria.

Mr Hocking, 49, says he’s particularly passionate about “improving the clinical outcomes of patients and raising the clinical standards and operations of ambulance paramedics”.

The other medal winner, Michael Patrick Whitty, of Springfield, was recognised for his service, leadership and dedication.

He has been lauded for establishing the Firefighters Charity Fund, which provides a co-ordinated approach to fund-raising within the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, focusing on the support of external charities, particularly in the areas of children’s health, burns treatment and cancer research.

Mr Whitty has been recognised for innovation in driving change in the MFB with his research and implementation of advanced applications and techniques for using thermal imagery as a primary tool for combating fire and emergency incidents. \ AV

citizens of the year

Kyneton’s Roni Wildeboer is Macedon Ranges’ top citizen. Ms Wildeboer started Artists for Orphans, an organisation that uses art to help orphaned children affected by Agent Orange in Vietnam.

She travels to Vietnam about twice a year to oversee work done to help several sponsored orphanages. Last year, the not-for-profit organisation provided Go Vap Orphanage with medication for babies in intensive care and amenities including airconditioning.

Artists for Orphans also donated $10,000 from sale of paintings and fundraisers to sponsor young people so that when they leave the orphanage they are able to learn life skills and a trade, or attend university.

“These kids are institutionalised; they have no life skills and are vulnerable to human trafficking, sweat shops and the sex trade,” Ms Wildeboer said. “These sponsorships help the kids learn life skills.”

At an Australia Day ceremony on Sunday, Macedon Ranges council presented Ms Wildeboer with the citizen of the year award.

“It’s been my experience that being involved in your local community is incredibly rewarding, and our community has so much to offer. I’m also fortunate for another reason: I’ve discovered the joy and sense of fulfilment

our top citizens laudedAustralia Day

Australia Day was celebrated with style on Sunday with fireworks and citizen of the year ceremonies in Hume.

The council, among the most culturally diverse in Australia, paid homage to its finest people, who have inspired others through their efforts to build stronger, more resilient societies.

Craigieburn State Emergency Service stalwart Kevin O’Callaghan, 63, received the top gong as Hume’s 2014 citizen of the year after dedicating more than 30 years of volunteer service to support locals during emergencies.

Hume mayor Casey Nunn, herself a former ‘young citizen of the year, said Mr O’Callaghan had a long and proud history of serving the community as spiritual leader and, more than three decades ago, as a founding member of the Craigieburn SES unit.

“Kevin O’Callaghan is a highly deserved recipient of the 2014 Hume citizen of the

year award,” Cr Nunn said. “He is modest in his tireless efforts in

his role as unit controller, where he has significantly contributed with the provision of vital emergency services to the community.’’

Mr O’Callaghan, who recently retired from the Department of Defence after 35 years’ service, has a long list of accolades and awards, including the prestigious Emergency Service Medal, National Service Medal and Australian Defence Force Medal.

He’s a member of the Craigieburn volunteer ambulance committee and led the formation of the Craigieburn Anzac Day organising committee, which now runs an annual service attended by more than 1500 people.

Talented Craigieburn boxer Michael Zerafa, 21, was named Hume young citizen of the year for his dedication to inspiring others to lead healthier, more active lives.

Sunbury Community Street Life festival gained the title of Hume’s community event of the year.

It was held on November 24 last year, closing local streets to traffic and opening up the town for the community to shop locally and support its traders. \

BRiEfSour drinking water gets a clearer runLancefield

A new $1.5 million pipeline between Lancefield and Romsey will change the way Lancefield residents receive drinking water.

Work on the 11-kilometre pipeline, which starts at Maloneys Road, will begin next month. It will connect Lancefield to drinking water from Rosslynne Reservoir in Gisborne, enabling the town to also receive water from Melbourne.

About 30 per cent of Lancefield’s drinking water currently comes from a bore in Romsey and is treated at the Lancefield filtration plant. The rest is from Garden Hut Reservoir in Lancefield. Romsey residents receive about 5 per cent bore water.

Western Water’s general manager of sustainable water solutions, Rob Franklin, said Lancefield would be less reliant on bores to boost drinking water during dry periods.

“We began adding bore water to Romsey and Lancefield supplies in mid-January as demand increased and reservoir levels reduced,” he said.

“Until now, Lancefield has been isolated from the region’s wider water supply network, with the town relying on limited water resources.

“The town’s Garden Hut Reservoir holds

up to 112 million litres, less than half a per cent of the capacity of Rosslynne Reservoir in Gisborne.

“[The pipeline] will give us the flexibility to use other water sources when Garden Hut is low, ensuring Lancefield has a secure supply

of water as the town’s population grows.”The pipeline will take about six months

to build, and Mr Franklin says it will give residents a range of options for their water supply. \

epic ride a sister’s tributeSunbury

Sunbury’s Lani Bullen will embark on an epic bike ride from Tylden to Broome in the name of her sister Elke.

Affectionately known as Flea, Ms Bullen’s younger sister died from cystic fibrosis in 2007 at the age of 16.

“I thought I would do this for her,” says Ms Bullen, who will ride almost 5000 kilometres over 10 weeks to reach Broome in Western Australia to honour her sister and raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Australia.

It was January last year that she decided she wanted to complete the marathon ride, and she’s been training and raising money since.

She chose Broome as the destination because Flea always wanted to go there.

“I’m not sure why Broome ... she wanted to drive there when she was 18, probably because it was far away and she wanted to get away from everything.”

Flea was born with cystic fibrosis and was diagnosed with the recessive genetic condition at eight weeks.

By age 12 she was reliant on oxygen and couldn’t leave the house without a wheelchair.

In 2004, she underwent the first children’s heart-double lung transplant performed at The Alfred hospital. This meant she could go to friends’ houses for sleepovers, ride a bike and join a swimming team.

But Flea became ill in early 2007 and died later that year, on September 5.

Ms Bullen will push off on her bike on April 9 on what would have been her

sister’s 23rd birthday. Her parents and fiance will come

along for the ride in a support vehicle.

“My parents loved the idea, so it was 12 to 14 months of preparation

and training.“I’m a very active person anyway, but this

is going to be a good mental challenge as well as a physical challenge.”

Fund-raising for the Ride for Flea has reached $12,000, but Ms Bullen has set her target firmly at $30,000.

She plans to ride an average of 120 kilometres each day. On her most testing day, she hopes to ride 220 kilometres.

Now she’s hoping for sponsors to get on board to help with accommodation costs for her and her support crew while they are on the road for 10 weeks. \

quit backs justice centre smokes ban

Quit Victoria has thrown its support behind a move to make the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre smoke-free.

People in custody at the centre and staff, contractors and visitors entering the precinct have been prohibited from smoking there since December.

More than 75 per cent of young men detained at Malmsbury are smokers. About 5 per cent of them had previously taken up smoking on arrival at Malmsbury in order to fit in.

Quit Victoria acting executive director Luke Atkin said smoking bans would ensure prisoners kicked the habit.

“We know young people in custody have high smoking rates, and prisons and youth justice centres are often an initiation point for smoking,” he said.

“If you didn’t smoke before you entered a youth justice centre, it’s highly likely you will afterwards.”

Smoking has been banned at Victoria’s other youth justice centre in Parkville since 2006.

The state government will make all Victorian adult prisons smoke-free by July next year. \ AV

painter lets her art rule her headLancefield

Jill Camilleri uses painting as an escape. “It’s something I did as a teenager when I was going through a lonely stage,” she says.

In the years she didn’t paint, she was creative and artistic in other ways.

But after a breakdown at 40 and a mental illness diagnosis, she again immersed herself in art.

“It takes me away into my own little world . . . into this wonderful headspace,” she says. “It makes me feel really good, like I’ve accomplished something. It’s a good feeling to be able to finish something.”

Ms Camilleri, 56, will join friend and fellow painter Margaret Morgan for an exhibition and art sale in Lancefield.

Titled From coast to coast and in between, the exhibition will showcase a collection of works in watercolour, silk painting, pastel, oil and acrylic.

Ms Camilleri works from photographs of landscapes, often taken when on holiday.

Her work is sometimes experimental; she may take pieces from the photographs and transfer them to a canvas using oil, pastel or acrylic. Macedon Ranges landscapes also feature in the exhibition.

“Marg and I went to Hanging Rock and

took a pile of pictures,” Ms Camilleri says. “Sometimes what I paint is from my own holidays, from my own photographs, and sometimes it’s somewhere local.”

The exhibition, at MAD Gallery, 19 High Street, Lancefield (phone 5429 1432), is open from this Friday to February 27. \

From conducting opera to producing hit theatre shows, Greg Hocking has many strings to his bow, writes RobeRt Fedele

There’s no textbook on keeping a musical ensemble in sync by waving around a tiny baton.

“Conducting, you learn by observing as much as anything else,” Greg Hocking

explains.“The technical side of it is not that difficult.

It’s more rehearsal technique and how you get on with a large group of people. It’s almost psychological.”

We’re seated in Hocking’s Moonee Ponds lounge room, where a grand piano overlooking a window takes centre stage.

The 58-year-old is warm and jovial as he talks of developing a love of classical music at a young age.

After finishing high school at Essendon Grammar, Hocking studied music at Melbourne University in the early ’70s.

It was there he stumbled into the art of conducting. With no formal training available, his only option was to practise religiously and soak up knowledge from the handful of people in the business.

Hocking graduated and went on to score a gig conducting for the Queensland Opera.

He then progressed to the Australian Opera, based in Sydney, in an administration role which, he says, allowed him to study under famous conductors such as the late Carlo Felice Cillario.

“I was able to attend a lot of rehearsals and do a lot of conducting study on the side,” Hocking says. “Because it’s mainly a leadership thing, a lot of people think, yeah, I can do that. And then they find out they can’t.”

These days Hocking runs the Melbourne Opera Company out of the Athenaeum Theatre in Collins Street.

His role as ‘frontman’ is largely conducted behind the scenes. “If you’re good at rehearsal, by the time you get to the performance you’re just guiding. But conducting is endlessly stimulating; you never get bored.”

Except, perhaps, when things turn pear-shaped, which Hocking says happens from time to time. He tells an anecdote about Madame Butterfly, an opera hinging on a dastardly lover returning, which features a bass drum player creating a cannon shot.

“The bloke playing on the bass drum was chatting up the lady playing the clarinet, who didn’t have much to do,” Hocking recalls.

“There was a long wait. I glanced over. I could see they were paying no attention whatsoever. I started coughing to try and get his attention. Nothing. I had to go, ‘Ahem!’

“The guy just about dropped everything. He whacked the drum and we were able to keep going. Of course, he shot through at the end of the show and I never saw him again,” Hocking says with a laugh.

He established Melbourne Opera in 2003 to fill the void left by the collapse of the Victorian State Opera in the mid ’90s. He describes the ‘new’ company as a stepping stone for fledgling performers.

“It’s quite hard to get meaningful experience as an opera singer,” he says. “That’s what keeps the older people like me interested because we’re able to see these people’s careers go forward.”

Conducting has been a big part of Hocking’s life, but he insists his main gig is being one of Australia’s leading theatre producers.

“Theatre producing is very much independent, entrepreneurial, learn-on-the-job and make your mistakes as you go.”

It all started when Hocking moved back to Melbourne in 1979 and founded the iconic

Universal Theatre in Fitzroy, the birthplace of such stars as Max Gillies and Nick Giannopoulos.

“The Universal Theatre was almost a laboratory. It was a very accessible, rough and ready theatre where lots of shows started out,’’ Hocking says.

“It was a little 300-seat theatre in Fitzroy before Brunswick Street was Brunswick Street.”

Hocking enjoyed early success as a producer with hits including Robyn Archer’s one-woman cabaret A Star is Torn.

One of his biggest triumphs was producing Wogs out of Work, which led to the cult TV series Acropolis Now and a string of spin-offs.

“It just boils down to judgement. And of course you have as many misses as hits,” he concedes. “In the mid-’80s it was highly offensive [to be called

a wog]. And of course they liberated the word.”

Perhaps of even more importance was Hocking’s part in establishing the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 1986.

He says the idea was planted by then South Australian premier Don Dunstan.

“He saw all these little comedy venues and said, ‘Hey, you’ve got something here’.”

Hocking and Melbourne’s close-knit group of promoters soon formed a committee and hatched the idea for the festival, “little knowing it would turn into the biggest arts event in the southern hemisphere”.

The first festival was held at the Universal Theatre and the Athenaeum in the CBD. It

featured 13 shows and 57 performances.Hocking knew Barry Humphries and was a

friend of English comedian Peter Cook, so he got both of them along as special guests to rustle up media interest.

“The first comedy festival made a very big impact even though it was actually quite small.”

Today’s festival features 450 comedians and thousands of performances. Hocking was once a member of the festival’s board, but his involvement now rests in maintaining the Comedy Club – which he took over in 1986 and now runs out of his beloved Athenaeum Theatre – as a major fixture.

“The theatre itself is like a money pit. You can never keep these things fully restored; it’s a big old Victorian building – the back wall’s from 1839. It’s the oldest wall in Melbourne.”

As we conclude our interview and head to the door we pass dozens of posters and framed black and white photos of stars such as Humphries and Mary Coustas before she was ‘Effie’. The image of Barry brings memories flooding back to Hocking. “He’s a wonderful man, a genius. To get to work with him was terrific and coming from Moonee Ponds, I always felt an affinity with Barry Humphries.

“He’s not from here though. He’s from Camberwell; he’s very posh. He’s got a funny association with Moonee Ponds – he doesn’t know much about it. He just used it as a gag, which took on a life of its own.” \

family’s drive a fillip for tired fireysSunbury

A Sunbury mother and two of her daughters decided they couldn’t sit at home and do nothing while CFA crews fought fires in and around Sunbury this month.

“We were just sitting at home looking at the Sunbury Region Community Facebook page when the town had fires going in Racecourse Road and there were a lot of people who couldn’t do anything,” Janine Meyer told the Weekly last week.

“We decided to call Safeway and see whether we could set up [a stall] in front of their store and collect donations from people shopping to give to the Sunbury firefighters.

“They said yes.”Ms Meyer also put her donation-drive

idea on the Sunbury Region Community Facebook page, and it became a hit.

“We had $1200 of donations in the first five hours and donations are still coming in,” she said last Wednesday. “A guy from Queensland even donated $100.”

With more money raised than expected, the donations were shared among six stations – Diggers Rest, Bulla, Wildwood, Clarkefield and two in Sunbury.

Diggers Rest lieutenant Steve Hynes was ‘‘shocked’’ by the generosity of the

community. “After returning from the fires at Davis Road [in Sunbury on January 17], we found there was lots of bottled water, chips, biscuits and lollies.

“It totally blew us away. We rely on that sort of thing to keep the boys rehydrated. Water and Gatorade are the first things we pack on the truck, but with a lot of [government] cutbacks it’s very limited.

“The fact that they [the community] had

raised so much money and it went around to six local brigades is a huge help to us and the other stations.”

Grateful Diggers Rest members last week invited Ms Meyer and her daughters to the station to say thanks, and the meeting has led to one of her daughters planning to become a junior firefighter. \

■ The medium- to long-term future of Woodend will be decided in the next few months. A three-year saga leading to this point has not been easy to follow.Below is a dotted history of events.• Macedon Ranges council engages

a consultant to ascertain Woodend residents’ attitudes to the town’s future. The result was a clear acceptance that some growth was inevitable, but lower rather than higher growth was desirable.

• Developer Villawood appears with its vision of a 600-800-lot development of Davies Hill.

• There is a groundswell of opposition, reinforcing the community consensus for lower rates of growth.

• Braemar College has an agreement with Villawood about a school site but draws considerable flak when it asks parents to lobby their councillors for rezoning. On reflection, Braemar decides it’s in the education game, not in land speculation.

• Council prepares a Woodend settlement strategy that specifically states there is sufficient residential land within the town boundaries to accommodate growth to 2030; no new (greenfield) sites need to be opened.

• This plan then goes before a three-person panel (C84). A horde of expert witnesses say the council has got it wrong. Community views are not heard.

• The C84 panel’s report suggests/recommends that the council revisit its views about greenfield sites.

• Council engages Planisphere to produce a new Woodend settlement strategy ($100,000 cost) and to look at where expansion, if necessary, would occur.

• Planisphere’s draft report indicates that the council’s initial stance – that there is sufficient land within the town – is correct. However, it investigates future sites and comes up with three, in priority order: 1, east of town; 2, Old Lancefield Road; 3, land at the end of

This last episode must be a massive kick in the teeth to all the hard-working volunteers behind the schools. What is happening to state education in Kyneton? Is there some strange vendetta against the children of Kyneton? What has Kyneton done to deserve this atrocious treatment from the state government? What is its excuse? Our town deserves better. The news that several junior school buildings are being removed from Kyneton Secondary College is just appalling, especially in light of the bad run all the local schools and kinder have been having of late. DANCE 2014 AdveRtisiNg feAtURe

It was a friend’s invitation to Melbourne- based contemporary dancer and choreographer Lee Serle to a “bring a friend

day” at a local dance school when he was 11 years old that started Serle’s interest in performing arts.

“I used to make up dances in my lounge room, then I learnt a jazz routine at my friend’s dance school,” recalls Serle [pictured], who has performed with renowned dance group Chunky Moves.

“In high school I started tap dancing, ballet and contemporary dance and from the age of 16 I was involved in a lot of commercial gigs. It was then I realised I could make a career out of something I loved.”

After studying for a bachelor of dance degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, the then 21-year-old went on to perform here and abroad.

“I’ve enjoyed performing in New York at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, at the Edinburgh Festival and the Sydney Opera House.”

Serle says it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make it in the performing arts industry.

“There’s not a lot of money or security in dancing or choreography. And you sacrifice your body. Mine is always pretty sore and exhausted.

“You need patience and a real love for it and it’s that love that helps you continue.”

Serle says he likes contemporary dance and choreography for different reasons.

“When I perform in the dances I have choreographed it’s stressful but rewarding. If I’m dancing in another person’s performance I can relax more and not worry about whether the audience is enjoying it.”

Now 31, Serle says his main focus is choreographing.

“I want to continue making and performing dance works in Australia and overseas. I’ve only created a couple of my own works, so I hope to gain momentum with that. I hope to live overseas for a period of time. I’m not sure when or where yet.” \

This is essential for investors leasing out their property. There are a few practical hints which help

maximise rental income and minimise tenant turnover. Some are:

Charge a fair rent. Check the market in the area of your property and determine a fair rental. If you

overcharge, you may have a higher attrition rate and vacancy factor.

Check your property thoroughly. Make sure all appliances are safe and in working order. Carry out

routine maintenance when necessary. Make sure the property is clean inside and out. A good tenant

will look for a good landlord. A professional approach and attitude tells a tenant that the place will run

smoothly.

Use checklists. Have a set procedure for a rental application, and use a standard industry lease form.

Check all references, and speak to the previous landlord.

Inspect your property. Do this every 6 months or so, and your tenants will know you’re interested

and keeping an eye on things. Simple? Yes, but it can be time consuming. We at Dunlop Real Estate

specialise in rental management. For a small commission, we do all the above and even more. We can

attend to payment of all property expenses, including rates, insurance and repairs. We relieve you of the

burden of management. If we at Dunlop Real Estate can assist you with any real estate matter, feel free

to call me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

Keats wrote that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. That’s a mighty long time, but Erinvale has been – and will be far into the future – an ode to beauty.

Susan Irvine began creating the gardens encircling this circa-1870 Victorian in the early 1990s. She later wrote a book on her endeavours entitled A Hillside of Roses. And the wonderful house also has cachet, with published articles sharing its restoration story.

Original rosettes, picture rails, working cast iron fireplaces in timber surrounds, wide floorboards, french doors, a decorative hallway

arch, ornate vents and deep cornices and skirts trumpet the dwelling’s era – and reproduction tweaks are sympathetically executed. The dings and patina of age are retained so the historical narrative is easily read.

A study with built-in cabinetry and the first of three bedrooms (with French chandelier and built-in robe) are along the central hallway, as is a large Victorian-style bathroom with pressed-metal ceiling and clawfoot bath.

Elegant lounge and dining rooms are linked on the opposite side of the hall. Tucked to the side, the piece de resistance in the original Victorian section (there’s a later addition at

the back) is a brick-paved conservatory – a gorgeous morning room with leafy outlook.

At hall’s end is a timber-floored family room with multi-paned windows affording views of a delightful leafy grotto with lily pond. Next is the kitchen-diner with oregon cabinetry, an island bench, dishwasher, 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop.

Glass doors lead from here to a window-lined corridor, off which are two bedrooms, the main with en suite and fitted dressing room.

Now those celebrated gardens on about 0.6 hectares ... Carved into the hillside via meandering terraced, drystone-walled walkways

culminating in sitting nooks, arbours, a gazebo, a fountain, “rooms” and living postcards, the landscaping is alive with a 200-year-old Portuguese oak, towering elms, poplars, silver birches, willow and other exotics, underplanted with hellebores. Lavender, box and rose hedges, rhodies, weeping mulberries and other ornamentals are a backdrop for well-positioned brick-paved sitting/barbecue areas.

A fitted wine storage room, cubby house, gardener’s shed with toilet, an unlimited bore, gabled carport, and a double-storey loft studio/retreat are other outdoor blessings. \

18 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES WEEKLY \ JANUARY 28, 2014

There’s land aplenty on this beautifully designed property ‘Glenreagh’. Its four hectares are set amidst rolling hills and positioned on the north-facing

side of Mount Gisborne. The traditional homestead is strong on accommodation: it has six bedrooms, four living areas, including a dining room flanked by an aquarium, and there’s a billiards room with stone fireplace and mantelpiece, a wet bar, and a powder room.

Quality craftsmanship has gone into the double glazing, blackbutt floorboards, three-metre-high ceilings with rosettes, and decorative cornices.

The kitchen retains a sense of tradition with its spacious dimensions and leadlight overhead cabinetry, and there are granite benchtops, glass splashbacks and a 900-millimetre freestanding cooker. Bi-folding doors lead to a covered outdoor entertainment area with stencil paving and ceiling fans.

Next to the main residence are guest quarters with en suite, and there’s a double garage and storeroom.

Adding to the appeal are loads of storage space, an activities wall and a synthetic grass tennis court with spectators’ shelter.

And the new owner will have an office, shed, rainwater storage, Castlemaine stone terracing, a paddock for grazing stock, a seasonal creek and a spring-fed dam. \

tech talk

\ this phone’s a looker, writes rod easdown

In 2000, all the phones and answering machines on the market were big, clumsy and plain. They could have all been

designed by the same bloke, and if they were I’d lay money on him being an engineer.

So when a prestige audio brand introduced telephones that looked good, I was the first in line. I even got the matching answering machine. Both turned out to lack intuition, and be unreliable and clunky to use. One frustrating day I spied a dumpster outside and pitched them in. I felt good for days.

Now I can face facts and admit that I bought them not because of anything technical or even practical; I bought them because they were beautiful.

The great bulk of landline phones still look much the same, which is why an import company called Mint Technology is kicking goals. It sells products for homes and businesses, and they all look good, but the handsets that link to mobile phones are the most interesting.

Among them is one that’s kind of like the excavated skeleton of phones of the past, another has a Bluetooth handset elegantly arcing out of its cradle like a wave.

And now, at last, Mint has introduced a landline phone that, to my eyes anyway, is the best-looking thing on the market. It’s

called the Eclipse and it’s more like a modern, minimalist sculpture than a phone.

It’s a 162 millimetre-high ovoid ring without a centre boss or spokes, kind of like a tyre without a wheel. And it’s angled slightly backwards, narrowing as it swings upward.

The handset, which is cordless of course, is at the top, making up just over a quarter of the circumference. Lift it out and its arc curves naturally from ear to mouth, the slimmest part of the assembly being at

the earpiece and gently expanding towards the mouthpiece.

It’s only when you’ve taken the handset out that you discover the screen and the number pad, which otherwise face

downwards and remain relatively hidden from view.

Aha! Is there anyone who doesn’t screen calls these days? Is it possible to lift the phone out of the cradle to see the caller information on the screen without answering the call? Yep, it is, because you must press the “talk” button before the call is connected. The remaining 240 degrees of the structure make up the charger and the answering machine. \

[email protected]

the Details \It stores up to 200 numbers,

there’s a speakerphone when required and a choice of five ring

tones. The handset can operate for up to 13 hours between charges and the

system is expandable; you can have up to four handsets.

It is available in black, red or white and a single handset system starts at $150.

With two handsets, it’s $230 and with three $350. An additional handset

costs $120.

east sunbury aims higherEDFL

East Sunbury had a tough initiation to senior football in Essendon District Football League last year.

Making its debut in division 2, the club lost all 18 games by an average margin of 178 points. Only once, against Keilor Park in round 15, did it get within 100 points of an opponent.

But despite the startling lack of success on field, officials are confident about the direction the club is heading in.

Football operations manager Jayden Perez says everything is on schedule for the senior club’s sophomore season.

“Probably externally, our results showed that the season wasn’t as great as it could have been,” he says. “But internally, the goals we set ourselves were certainly met.

“We know it’s a learning curve. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t build a club overnight.

“We had 120 different players come through the seniors and reserves, and we went a long way towards building the type of culture we want.”

Perez says the club is hoping to finalise a number of new recruits in the coming weeks, with negotiations continuing.

He says about 80 per cent of the playing group have remained from last year’s winless season.

East Sunbury has come a long way since

starting its first junior side in 2000. In recent years, the club moved to Goonawarra Recreation Reserve, meaning it enjoys some of the finest facilities in the EDFL.

Perez says East Sunbury will look to host junior inter-league matches at the ground this year.

“It’s a nod from the EDFL that the club is on the right track,” he says.

Still, external pressures keep the committee

members busy. The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges area features a large range of clubs playing across five different leagues – Riddell, Maryborough-Castlemaine, Ballarat and Bendigo leagues, as well as the EDFL.

Perez says the club aims to get two or three wins on the board this year, eyeing off Jacana and Burnside Heights as possible victims. \
