National Commission for Women
It is great to know that 3rd National Essay Writing Competition on Nation and Nationalism
2019 is being organized by Amity Law School.
Nationalism is generally constructed from a masculine perspective, women’s roles are often
limited to supporting nation-building efforts through symbolic, moral and biological
reproduction. As a result of being associated with, and participating in the freedom struggle,
Indian women need to realise the importance of living life that is a need to construct the
nationalist narrative of unheard voices, goes beyond conventional sources of history such as
official and archival records. Let the women speak for themselves. Within the domestic
sphere, women's nationalist identities were continuously re-negotiated to accommodate
values of ancient Indian culture and the new Western influences.
This Essay Writing Competition on Nation and Nationalism will result in awareness amongst
women, students and professionals all over the country by giving them more confidence to
fight their problems so that their genuine issues do not go unheard. It will provide an
excellent platform to all the participants across India to come up with brain storming views
to ameliorate the conditions of women folks.
I am also confident that this Competition will immensely contribute in throwing light and
enhancing knowledge regarding the Nation’s development in all aspects.
Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd.)
Director, Amity Law School
Greetings Young friends!!
Amity Law School is committed to serve the society not only through its formal academic
programmes but also by focussing on co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including its
extension programmes. We at ALS in addition to training the students in advocacy skills also
sensitize them towards the needs of society and the Nation. We at Amity Law School try to enhance
Legal and Social awareness of our students to achieve universal distinction.
Law being a subsidiary discipline of polity, needs to discuss the state and the nation, which is the
central theme of our political system. Keeping this in mind we have started a series of competitions
touching various socio-political and legal issues.
Nationalism and patriotism are much talked about terms in modern days. The idea of the nation-
state developed in Europe in the 14th- 15th centuries but the idea of extreme nationalism engulfed
the European nations in 18th- 19th centuries, ultimately leading to the world wars. Students need
to deliberate and discuss this growth of nationalism with its pros and cons.
It is an honour for Amity Law School Gurugram to organize the 3rd edition of essay competition in
collaboration with National Commission for Women and Legal Bites. It requires cumulative effort
and commitment of the institution and the students to make the event great success by ensuring
maximum participation. Essay Writing is an opportunity which benefits all students pursuing any
course in expanding their intellect and understanding. With a view to raise the concern for the dying
Nationalist feelings in the hearts of young minds, in this digital era, we need to encourage the
students all over the country to be a part of the competition online.
Our partners for this event, National Commission for Women, Legal Bites and Indian Lawyers
Association are playing an integral part in making this event a grand success.
I extend my best wishes to all the participants and wish everyone the very best of luck, hoping that
each one will be benefitted from this Competition.

BACKGROUND
The word ‘Nation’ is derived from the Latin word ‘natio’ meaning birth or descent. On the
other hand, Nationalism is usually defined as a sentiment of a Nation but in reality, it is
more than a mere sentiment. As Lord Morley remarks, Nationalism “from instinct became
an idea, from the idea, abstract principle, then fervid prepossession; ending where it is
today in dogma whether accepted or evaded.”
Leaving aside all derivatives and definitions of the concepts of ‘Nation’ and ‘Nationalism’,
from a layman’s perspective, Nation may be defined as a conglomeration of a united band
of people with a notion of a feeling or unifying factor among them in the form of
Nationalism. In this way, Nation and Nationalism are inseparable and indestructible
concepts. One cannot be devoid of the other. On the contrary, if Nation and Nationalism get
divorced it would spell doomsday for that Nation in the form of mass anarchy and
destruction for the nationals of that Nation.
Coming specifically to our country India, the coterminous terms Nation and Nationalism are
precisely and appropriately the two terms which must bind every Indian whether
individually or collectively as nationals of this great land of ours. In this precise context, it is
worthwhile pondering, about the fact that, if we, in the comity of Nations in this world of
ours wants to march ahead as a Nation then our unifying force and identity must be Indian
Nationalism.
If we Indians cannot come under one umbrella in the form of Indian Nationalism, then it will
be a saga of ‘united we stand and divided we fall’. In this context, the unifying force for our
nationals can certainly be the fact of our Indian Nationalism. On the contrary, the dividing
lines among us in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual and in a land of religious, cultural and
racial diversity can certainly be drawn by the fissiparous tendencies of the fissiparous forces.
The bottom line is that the national development is a constructive process of engaging all
the people of the country in building political stability, social unity and economic prosperity
of the country in an all-encompassing and democratic manner. It involves all citizens in the
process of development of the nation. Thus, they have the most important role to play in
the development of our Nation.
