What are healthy snacks?

Page 5: Snacking on almonds could it make a difference to heart ...Control snacks The development of control muffin snacks (sweet and savoury) Irish Food Board. Snacking in Ireland and UK

Almonds

Highest protein, fibre, riboflavin, niacin,

vitamin E and calcium per portion (of

tree nuts).

Rich in L-arginine (converted to nitric

oxide in body) and phytosterols (bind

cholesterol in the intestine)

Rationale for replacing typically consumed snacks with almonds

Insulin resistance

Raised LDL cholesterol and

triglycerides

Improved cardiometabolic health

Swapping snacks

Micronutrients

Phytochemicals

Refined carbohydrates

Saturated fat

Fibre

Research question: does snacking on almonds influence

cardiometabolic health?

2 weeks 6 weeks

Study design

• Randomised, controlled dietary intervention study

• Parallel groups: whole roasted almonds or muffin snacks

Study population

• Men and women, 30-70 y

• Regularly consume ≥2 snack products per day,

• Moderate risk of developing CVD

Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02907684

Recruitment/

screening

Run-in (control

snacks)Intervention (randomised to control or almond snacks,

20% of energy requirements)

• ATTIS study duration: July 2016 to May 2019

e.g. 400 kcal for

an average

woman

Average intake of nuts (and almonds) is low in the UK

• 7% of UK adults consume whole almondsUK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2008-2017, n=6,802

Median intake 5 g/d in consumers

• 11% of UK adults consume whole tree

nutsUK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2008-2014, n=4,254

Dikariyanto et al (2019) Public Health Nutrition (in press); Dikariyanto et al (manuscript submitted)

* Reported during a 4-day period, not including nuts consumed as a composite part of meal

Median intake 6.5 g/d in consumers

Conclusions and implications

• Should we be encouraging more snacking on tree nuts – such as almonds – for better heart

health?

• “Nuts are high in fibre, and unsalted nuts

make a good snack. But they do still

contain high levels of fat, so eat them in

moderation.” www.NHS.uk/live-well/eat-

Conclusions and implications

• Should we be encouraging more snacking on tree nuts – such as almonds – for better heart

health?

• Can we increase nut intakes?

• EAT-Lancet planetary health diet:

consumption of nuts must double (e.g. 50

g/d as alternative to red meat)

• Requirement for crop-land and water

would be very large – effect on

ecosystems?
