Before we talk about SnapProtect, its helpful to understand what todays backup and recovery challenges are:

Increasingly, data protection teams are not able to meet their backup windows and are finding it more difficult to rapidly recover the data when their business users need it most.Often, many traditional backup software solutions require large and costly infrastructures that include the backup software as well as servers and storage to support the infrastructure, and the cost of backup grows proportionally to data growth. It starts with NetApps unique storage strengths.

First and most important, NetApp uses its unique Snapshot technology, which uses pointers rather than resource-intensive copying, as the underpinning for disk-to-disk backup and disaster recovery. These Snapshot copies have almost no impact on performance of the storage, and therefore no impact on the production environment. And the architecture of NetApp Snapshot copies always provides a full restore in a single pass; theres no need to restore a recent full backup and then apply incremental updates separately. With NetApp you can take Snapshot copies multiple times per hour and still not affect performance noticeably.

Thin replication maintains primary-side storage efficiencies such as deduplication and compression on data transferred over the wire. This results in a significant reduction in storage and network use, translating to direct cost savings by using fewer disks and less bandwidth, and indirect cost savings through reduced footprint, power, and cooling. Thin replication also enables frequent transfers relative to traditional replication, which can minimize data loss in the event of a disaster. And when disaster strikes, businesses can recover from a more recent copy of their data, which helps to improve overall availability levels.

In the box on the right, we cover the benefits of SnapProtect. First , no one wants MORE panes of glass, and second, application awareness is fast becoming a baseline feature of B&R. Most of the apps have their own tools, but DP departments want to offer the service and have control to boot. People want policies, and theyd prefer to not have to do them with scripts. Next, its fine to back up data, but what do you do when you want to find it? You need a catalog function, especially when you want to do granular recovery. Its not enough to know that the file you need was probably in yesterdays backup. Using OnCommand, secondary storage provisioning is supported, and the built-in storage resource management uses data collected by the backup to provide analytics about data types, growth trends, and cost metrics, down to the VM level, if necessary. And speaking of VMs, its hard to find shops that arent using VMs, and with SnapProtect, you dont need to buy separate VM backup tools.

How does SnapProtect fit into our Integrated Data Protection ecosystem?

Our positioning of NetApp backup and recovery solutions and partner integrations is based on recovery and retention time, as well as the breadth of the use in the customers environment.

If the goal is local recovery for application and virtualization administrators, then recommend the SnapManager software family for the different applications supported (such as SnapManager for Exchange or for Oracle). Similarly, if the virtualization-centric approach is desired, then our SnapManager for Virtual Infrastructure or Hyper-V would be the appropriate options. Finally, Snap Creator is a framework that can extend SnapManager functionality to applications for which there are not specific SnapManager products, such as Lotus Domino or custom applications.

If the goal is backup management of your entire environment, then NetApp SnapProtect is a complete backup and recovery solution delivering disk-to-disk-to-tape backup for long-term retention. It manages multiple applications, as well as multiple virtual infrastructures, from a single pane of glass.

If the goal is integration with an existing backup infrastructure, then suggest that the customer leverage their existing vendors integration with our storage to manage Snapshot copies.
