Home~Garden & Treasures Tour Recap SNAP’s 2016 Home~Garden & Treasures Tour was the best ever in terms of generating neighborhood spirit AND fun(d)raising success! Eight home and garden owners (three from Sunrise Mountain Ridge, two from Sunrise Territory Village Townhomes and one each from Sunrise Mountain View Estates, Sunrise Canyon and Sunrise Territory Estates) opened their hearts and homes to Tour Day visitors and one homeowner hosted a back-yard potluck for volunteers the preceding night. A record-breaking 200 guests enjoyed Tour Day festivities in the Fairfield community. Special thanks to 63 volunteers (managing food, signs, sponsors, tickets, decorations, parking, publicity etc.), 36 business sponsors (who provide commercial services to homeowners in the area) and the 19 Silent Auction and Door Prize contributors who made this annual event very successful! Showing on-site was the Jim Click Automotive Team’s gift to Tucson charities—a 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. Additional raffle tickets ($25 ea.) for the December 9 th drawing are still available. All proceeds from this raffle and from the rest of the Home~Garden and Treasures Tour benefit SNAP directly. Call the SNAPLine for more information – 520-437-9556. Our Vision: Enhance the quality of life for senior and/or disabled, injured or ill residents residing in the SNAP service area (Craycroft, Sunrise, Kolb and River Rds.) as they age-in-place in their own homes. Our Mission: To provide an array of “neighbors helping neighbors” volunteer services, educational programs and social events that assist and support residents in their own homes.

Sizzlin’ Summer Socializers To help beat the heat and summer doldrums, SNAP added new Monday afternoon programs to its calendar. Each session included fun conversation games, recreation and a lot of laughs. The group invited a speaker for August from Tucson Water to talk about water conservation efforts that will help keep a dwindling water supply available for future generations. These new summertime programs give us an opportunity to stay cool and connected to friends and neighbors. The September 26th program at the Lutheran Church of the Foothills will feature Medicare fraud and abuse plus medication management. Permanent Disposal of Medications and Medical Supplies If you (or your pet) have unused, unwanted or expired medicines, please take them to a Medication Drop Box location at 8999 E. Tanque Verde Rd. or 7300 N. Shannon Rd., Monday through Friday from 10 am – 4 pm. This method of permanent disposal protects our groundwater, reduces substance abuse and prevents childhood poisonings. There is no charge and no required paperwork for this service offered by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Please place all medications in a zip lock bag, without containers. Do not include syringes, powders, liquids or gels in your zip lock bag. These items should be placed in dark, heavy plastic (e.g. detergent) containers and then filled up with kitty litter or sand. Seal tightly, label clearly (“DO NOT RECYCLE”) and place in your garbage can for home pick-up. All other unused, unopened medical supplies may be taken to World Care Donation Center at 3430 E. 36th Street (inside Sam Levitz warehouse) Monday through Friday 8 am – 1 pm. For more information, please go to: www.disposeamed.pima.gov.

Meet our “Neighborhood Nonas” Lillian is still celebrating her rise into “Nonagenarianhood!” That’s an elite society of 90+ year old persons living in our midst whose wisdom and experiences have shaped who they are today! Lillian retired from various opportunities in the business world to pursue her lifelong interest in travel- ling and continuing education. What gets her up each morning is the anticipation of her daily activities of interest— books, water aerobics, volunteering with SNAP and the JCC, and staying connected to faraway friends and family via her phone and computer. Lillian loves her home and its sense of refuge and is thankful to be healthy enough to experience the blessings of whatever she wishes to do. She has the realization that she must take advantage of this state of being; it is finite. Gloria gets a personal wake up meow from her pussy cat along with a call from her nearby daughter each morning at 6:30 AM. After a lengthy entrepreneurial career in fashion modeling, garment manufacturing, printing business ownership and private bookkeeping, she retired to Tucson. To combat a sense of loss from friends and family members dying of Alzheimer’s disease, Gloria wrote a book about her life’s experiences, published just prior to her 90th birthday. She enjoys seeing the accomplishments of her two daughters and is grateful for having many close friends. As one of SNAP’s first volunteers from eight years ago, Gloria still feels that giving of herself makes life worthwhile.
