Snatch – Title Sequence Evaluation

The shot begins, behind a man’s head. The narrator beings to speak. It begins very dark with some soft lighting. It moves up above to show two characters, Turkish and Tommy. This sets a very serious scene. The narrator tells the viewers how he got his name (Turkish). There is a close up of Turkish who appears to look very serious. The look to the viewers right side over to Tommy, and the camera switches to him. He is making strange movements with his mouth and Turkish looks at him disapprovingly. The camera switches to Turkish again and as he says ‘partner’ the shot turns to a two shot which is both of them in frame.

The two shot is also a medium shot. The shot switches between the two men, Turkish deep in thought as he narrates and Tommy still looking foolish.

The next scene is the robbery scene. The robbers are dressed as Jewish people with stereotypical payot curls and beards. A soundtrack starts as soon as the scene starts. This is non-diegetic sound, as the actors can’t hear it. We follow the four robbers dressed as Jewish men via a wall of tv’s displaying a live feed of security camera footage. The credits for the people involved in the movie display over the security footage as it the scene plays out.

Snatch – Title Sequence Evaluation

We follow the men all the way until they enter the room with the security tv’s then it pans to the right and shows the men walking in the door directly. This immerses you in the scene as you’ve seen the men walking from camera to camera, and now directly in front of you. When the security guard is looking at one of the men, there is eye line match. The camera has stayed on a single side of the men, commonly called a 180 degree rule.

This means when the camera looks at either of the men they appear to be looking at each other on the camera.

The next scene is a different atmosphere than the calm beginning. The camera begins to zoom in on the men and a very fast non-diegetic sound track begins. The men pull out guns and the scene is now very action packed. As the scene continues, half a second cuts in the action begin happening. This gives it a quick, panicky pace. The movement is fast and cuts between the men as they search for the diamond and throw objects around. After the man asks for the stone and hits a worker, it suddenly cuts to the crew in the van with a large diamond in their hand. This informs the viewer that the man gave up the stone. As it cuts to the van a low-key soundtrack starts playing, it is much calmer and highlights the calmness and success of the events that happened.

Snatch – Title Sequence Evaluation

The scene now changes to introduction of the characters, the non-diegetic soundtrack continues and the characters are highlighted and their name appears.

This is the end of the opening sequence.
