Single-aisle commercial jets
Snecma (Safran) and ge have teamed up since 1974 to develop, produce and sell the Cfm56 family of engines through their 50/50 company, Cfm international. as the powerplant of choice on the airbus a320 and boeing 737 families of single-aisle commercial jets, the Cfm56 embodies the skills of its two parent companies, renowned worldwide.
more than 24,000 Cfm56 engines have been delivered to date, making it the all-time best seller. it is also the most reliable engine of its generation. Cfm international is the leading supplier of engines for single-aisle jets with over 100 seats, the largest segment in the market. in 2008, Snecma and ge extended their partnership until 2040, to provide the foundations needed to develop future generations of industry-leading aircraft engines.
LEAP: the new-generation turbofan
The new LEAP turbofan engine, now being developed by Snecma and GE through CFM, has already been selected
to power three new-generation single-aisle jets: the Airbus A320neo (LEAP-1A), the Boeing 737 MAX (LEAP-1B) and the
Comac C919 (LEAP-1C). Featuring the latest technologies, such as 4th generation 3D-aero design and composite materials, LEAP will considerably reduce fuel consumption, noise and
CO2 emissions. It has already recorded more than 4,580 orders and commitments*, and is scheduled to enter service in 2016.

Twin-aisle aircraft
Snecma is also a player in the large turbofan market through risk-sharing partnerships with ge. in particular, we have a major stake in the world’s most powerful aero-engine, the ge90 that powers the boeing 777, as well as the gp7200 engine for the airbus a380, and the Cf6-80 that powers various widebody jets.
Regional jets
through powerJet, an equal joint venture with russian engine-maker npo Saturn, Snecma developed and produces the Sam146, the new benchmark in regional aviation. designed to meet the specific operating requirements of this market, the Sam146 powers the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional jet. the Sam146 entered revenue service in april 2011 and has already proven its dispatch reliability under all conditions.
Business jets
Snecma is also developing a new-generation engine, the Silvercrest, designed from the ground up for mid- and high-end business jets in the super-midsize, large and long-range class. this new engine will offer unrivaled performance in terms of fuel consumption and environmental-friendliness, with Co2, nox and noise well within current and future limits. it also integrates innovative maintenance solutions, such as real-time monitoring. the Silvercrest was recently selected by Cessna to power its new premium bizjet, the Citation longitude.

Liquid propulsion for launchers
the vulcain® 2 cryogenic engine, powering the main stage of ariane 5, develops nearly 300,000 pounds of vacuum thrust. more than 100 development and flight models of vulcain engines have been produced to date, and they have proven to be especially reliable in operation. at the end of 2012, europe’s ariane 5 launcher had chalked up 53 successful missions in a row.
Snecma’s hm7b cryogenic engine powers the upper stage of the most powerful version of this launcher, the ariane 5 eCa.
a new cryogenic engine, vinci®, developing nearly 40,000 lb of thrust and restartable in flight, will power the upper stage of both the upgraded ariane 5 me (midlife evolution) version, and the next-generation ariane 6. Snecma is coordinating all development activities for these upper-stage propulsion systems with our european partners.
Plasma propulsion for satellites
Snecma designs and produces a complete range of plasma thrusters, rated at 300 w to 20 kw, intended for satellite stationkeeping, orbital transfer and orbital positioning, as well as space exploration. this type of propulsion technology delivers major weight savings, and longer life in orbit for satellites.

TECHNOLOGICAL AND INDUSTRIAL EXPERTISE: THE KEYS TO SNECMA’S STRATEGY
Focus on excellence
technological expertise, the cornerstone of our business, makes us one of today’s leading manufacturers of aircraft and rocket engines. year after year, we invest over 11% of our revenues in research and development, a clear sign of our commitment to giving our customers the top-performing propulsion technologies. with some 2,500 r&d specialists throughout the company, Snecma will rise to the challenges facing us today, and for many years to come.
Standing out through innovation
with a portfolio of more than 13,000 patents, Snecma is one of the most innovative companies in the world*. we file about 400 new patents a year, a very reliable indicator of our ability to innovate and our commitment to building strong foundations for future growth.
Eco-strategy
one of the main challenges facing commercial aviation is to develop even more environmentally-friendly engines that significantly reduce fuel consumption. this is also one of our main goals at Snecma, of course, and meeting it has taken the largest share of our r&d budget for a number of years. we are rising to this challenge through our Cfm56, leap and Silvercrest engine families, all among the most economical on the market, with noise and emissions performance well within the most demanding current and future standards.
16_SNECMA, THE POWER OF ENGINOLOGYTM
World-class production facilities
along with our partner ge we produce some 1,400 Cfm engines per year, a rate that is unrivaled in this industry. and we will continue to raise this rate, first to 1,600 then to 1,800 by 2019. to meet these demanding industrial requirements, Snecma calls on a very robust organization and world-class development and production resources, processes and supply chain. for example, we have set up a pulse line, capable of turning out four Cfm engines a day, plus over one hundred test rigs for engine development and acceptance tests. at the same time, our global mro network counts eight service centers and 12 centers of repair excellence. along with these industrial resources, Snecma applies advanced methodologies in quality assurance, risk management and continuous improvement (lean and Six-Sigma).
Top talents
above all, at Snecma we count on the expertise of our people to maintain our standing as a world-class aircraft engine manufacturer and major player in the european space program. with the aviation market booming worldwide, we are gearing up for the future by applying a dynamic human resources policy. in the last two years we have hired over 2,000 new employees, mainly in development and production jobs, and we spend some 4% of payroll on in-service training.
