The Apopka Chief, November 20, 2020, Page 12B the fifth game was after the out- come had been decided, bonus awarded for achieving a strike on the first throw of the 10th. How- ever, strikes were eight to four in favor of Melbourne. Scores of the loss were 198- 189, 174-196, 224-206, 202-269, and 245-199. An average of 187 pins per game was posted by the Bulldogs against the four other opponents faced during the double-elimina- tion tournament. Apopka had to best an average of 208. Victories were earned over Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy (first round/3-0), North Ft. My- ers (third round/3-1), Eau Gal- lie (fourth round/3-1), and Tam- pa Bay HEAT (homeschool stu- dents) (fifth round/3-2) in the elimination bracket. Games were four, four, and five, respectively. Six matches and 23 games were thrown by the Blue Darters with an average of 203.5 pins. Ten-pin component saw Apopka knock down 4,329 pins, a 216.5 average and the number- one seed. Lowest number of pins scored for an individual game was 182 pins. Fifteen of the 20 scores reached at least 205 pins. The Titusville Astronaut War Eagles fell to the Daytona Beach Mainland Buccaneers in the final of the winner’s bracket. Victories were then earned over the Mus- tangs and War Eagles to claim the 2020 team state champion- ship. Coming out of the elimi- nation bracket, Astronaut needed to defeat Mainland twice during the overall final to claim the state championship. Individual competition in- cluded Isaiah Jackson as the lone Blue Darter advancing to the tour- nament. By a count of 2-0 games, Jackson won the first series. The next two series were lost though. Brandon Rucker of North Fort Myers lost during the third round of the winner’s bracket, but he won five matches (including two making up the overall final) to claim the 2020 individual state championship. Girls: Round of eight The Apopka Blue Darters girls bowling team entered the state championship meet as the team authoring the chapter of earning a berth for the first time in more than 15 seasons. A de- sire over the past four seasons de- veloped into all-consuming tena- cious determination overseeing a step-by-step progression toward state championship meet quali- fier. However, once at the 2020 state championship on November 3-5, the Blue Darters proved their game was much more. Apopka’s game translated to at the very least the capability of advancing equal to the rest of the field. Elimination didn’t come un- til the round of eight for the Blue Darters and against a state final- ist. However, saying Apopka ad- vanced to the final eight isn’t jus- tice to describing the transforma- tion from qualifying for the first time in over 15 seasons to a game equal with the rest of the field. Utmost and weightiest dra- ma was the Blue Darters’ com- panion while advancing. Headlining the list of drama was winning a playoff with elimi- nation on the line. The ninth and 10th frame are bowled again dur- ing a playoff. Facing the Ft. My- ers Green Wave in the elimination bracket and down 2 games to 0, Lexey Sapone tallied a spare, fol- lowed by Jordan Walker’s turkey (three consecutive strikes). Final score of the playoff was 50-27. The playoff was needed due to a 150-150 tie. Apopka evened the series with a convincing victory by the score of 196-141. Then a second playoff was needed to determine the outcome of the fifth game and, most im- portantly, elimination was on the line for both teams. The score was 151-151 after 10 frames. Sapone knocked down a strike. Strike, strike, and nine pins were pro- duced by Walker to provide the Blue Darters with a 59-29 victory and the means to advance. No playoffs were needed during the next series against the Daytona Beach Seabreeze Sand- crabs. However, Apopka lost the first game by a score of 178- 168 and had to come from be- hind. Next three games ended with scores of 188-178, 182-174, and 167-145 in favor of the Blue Darters. The lead held by the Sea- breeze was 11 points entering the eighth frame of the second game. Five consecutive strikes pro- duced the 21-point turnaround. Marks were decided by the slim- mest margin at 8-7. At 7-4, the Blue Darters held the advantage in strikes. Both teams produced eight strikes during the third game. The difference was five of Apopka’s marks were consecutive. Maxi- mum for the Sandcrabs was two. Five consecutive marks dur- ing the fourth game secured the victory. The Tavares Bulldogs pro- vided the opposition for the first series. Of the 12 games Apopka competed in, nine were decided by nine points or less. Percentage of marks com- pared to total frames rose from 56 to 73 from the playoff ending the third game of the series against the Green Wave. A perennial state champi- onship contender in the form of the Rockledge Raiders provid- ed the opposition for the match in the elimination bracket during the overall round of eight. Apop- ka remained a challenge as the third game began with the series tied at 1-1 games. However, en- durance and persistence were ex- erted by the Raiders. Scores of the last two games and in favor of Rockledge were 222-178, 204- 136. The Raiders upped the aver- age from 146 to 213 between the first and last two games. Three more series and five total while in the elimination bracket were won by Rockledge to advance to the overall finals. For the fourth time in five sea- sons and fifth overall, the Oviedo Lions emerged as the state team champion. Walker qualified for the in- dividual competition last and this season. By a 2-0 count, Walker won the first series of the 2020 competition. Then the next two series were lost. The individual state cham- pionship was claimed by Sier- ra Poole of the Lake Mary Rams. Endurance was needed as much as talent. Poole fell into the elimina- tion bracket after the second round and had to win seven matches to claim the state championship. Coming out of the elimination bracket, Poole’s run to the cham- pionships included needing to win two series during the overall final. 01. TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY 10. ANNOUNCEMENTS 12. Counseling 13.
